C99, Happy New Year

hny.jpg

Happy New Year to all those on Caucus99Percent. It's been a pleasure and privilege to interact with so many great people. People with good hearts who care about what's happening in their country and the world. Real people, truthseekers, some I've met, some I consider friends, some for many years now. Special HNY to JtC. You're a good man, brother. I greatly appreciate what you've done here and the opportunity to post my propaganda. It's been almost two years hasn't it?

So Happy New Year to all, I hope the best for everyone. Let's get something going in 2017, let's do a mass resolution that the Caucus99Percent blog is going to make a difference in 2017. Most of us have been at this long enough and the situation couldn't be more urgent. We have a strong voice here.

FREEDOM!!

I had this lined up for just a Friday night blog but never posted it. So since I'm too lazy to select another more appropo selection for New Year's Eve, I'll just run with it.

I used to love watching the Midnight Special, a musical variety show that aired late night on Fridays during the seventies. Come on, face it, there's nothing like that now. I liked the variety. Here's a sample of some of the memorable performances, except the first one which is just CCR singing the Midnight Special.

Thanks for the tunes! I struggled to stay up to watch the ball drop. I am "up," but have been asleep in my chair for the past couple hours or so, thus missed the magic changeover. Wow, 2017!! Well, it's OK so far. And now time to go to bed. I am only partly awake, no profound coherent thoughts. Good night, All!

Sorry I haven't been around much these last several months, but I been busy moving. I'm downsizing in living space, so I had to sort through nearly a lifetime of accumulated and assorted junk, which takes a lot of effort when most of it contains some sort of sentimental value. But then, I guess a lot of you have been through this, so I won't bore you further with the details.

Meanwhile, I've been helping my parents do the same, so not a lot of time for the intertubes and lengthy comment. Hopefully I'll get back in the habit this year. I do kinda miss you guys, y'know?

But no matter what comes, I'm grateful to the awesome people who have joined the conversation at c99. We have talked about everything under the sun, politically, and held it together. That's Johnny and Joe right there. True captains of this ship.

Happy New year, Al, and everyone. It's been the longest year and so much has happened. It's been a real game-changer.

it's a good place to call a virtual home and considering how often I return here, it has become my livingroom. Many thanks to the many writers here and to JtC and Joe for keeping the ship afloat and manoeuvring it through treacherous water. And a special shout out to Al: It's FREEDOM, but then there has to be
JUSTICE !! (So how do the two things work together I need to find out. My New Year's resolution is to have an answer to that by the end of 2017 ... Smile

All the best for everybody here in 2017.

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

Thank you for the perfect post to ring in the New Year., Al. I am not a night person, so I was tucked in bed by the time the clock struck midnight. Actually the last time I was up late enough to ring in the New Year was in 2000. So I am ringing it in with this wonderful group of people here at C99 this morning.

A big thank you to CSTS who had the original idea for this site and to JtC who actually made it happen and makes it happen every day. JtC, you are the best!!! Thank you to Joe who helps keep a steady hand on the helm and to all the good folks who share their writing talents here.

Finally, I want to thank everyone who visits here and supports this site with your donations and comments. You have challenged me to think outside the box and to search for ways to try to improve my own contributions both here and in real life. Best wishes and many blessings to each of you in the coming year.

edit: Remembering who was governor in 1981. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Brown

Low-paying work is a problem faced by Brown's grandniece, the young relative who makes $30,000 a year and lives at home. Asked last week what he would tell her about her predicament, he responded:

"I'd say, we're not going to adopt the socialist system with Leninism and all the rest of it.... The modern economy is based on individual reward, with most of the money moving toward the top. That's the system."

To be fair he did end that with this air,

He added, "We try to mitigate that."

His lordship will retire to a 2500 acre spread whilst California's homeless are quite totally fucked, because 35 years of "That's the system." Why Sonoma County Workers Can’t Afford the Rent

The state also has drastically cut back funding for affordable housing. In 2011 Governor Jerry Brown eliminated local redevelopment agencies that were the state’s main source for affordable housing funding, generating $1 billion annually for moderate and low-income affordable housing. Subsequently the state has created no new sources to fund affordable housing.

Last year, the Governor effectively killed legislation that would have created a dedicated source of funding for affordable housing by increasing taxes on real estate-related documents at the point of sale. Brown also vetoed another bill that would have expanded the state’s low-income tax credits, enabling affordable housing developers to procure more than $1 billion in federal funds.

With the temperatures falling toward freezing for a second night, about 150 people gathered Monday inside Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in midtown Sacramento to remember 81 homeless people who died on the streets this year.

The numbers of homeless men and women dying in Sacramento County have risen sharply in recent years, a report released Monday said.

Jerry Brown’s 1-800 presidential hotline still works! (2013)

... from his upstart 1992 campaign against Bill Clinton for the democratic presidential nomination. I remember Brown’s almost comical dedication to the then-state of the art campaigning technique. He would drop the number in every speech, every interview. He even wore a sweatshirt with the number ironed on the front.

1992 Presidential Democratic Primary Election Results - California

William J. Clinton Arkansas Democratic 1,359,112 47.46%
Edmund G. Brown California Democratic 1,150,460 40.18%
Paul E. Tsongas Massachusetts Democratic 212,522 7.42%
Eugene J. McCarthy Virginia Democratic 60,635 2.12%
Robert Kerrey Nebraska Democratic 33,935 1.19%
Larry Agran California Democratic 24,784 0.87%
Lyndon H. La Rouche, Jr. Virginia Democratic 21,971 0.77%

Oh yeah Lyndon La Rouche, feh. I voted Clinton, my brother was delegate to the '92 convention, appointed by D.A. Arlo Smith to SF Democratic Central Committee, and a founding member of the Clinton Gore Democratic Club. It is how I came to meet Donna Brazile, meh. Also how I came to meet Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, truly great.

OK, so the "modern economy" (aka "the system") is working perfectly well and there's no reason to undertake any fundamental changes. Or to even think about it very long, or analyze it, or develop critical insights, etc.

We just need to "mitigate" it?!?

So anybody can figure out a bottom line, right? Brown's legislative decisions, cited above, show that he knows how to KEEP the system working perfectly well.

How about "mitigating" our way into a whole new system. . . .

Let me add my gratitude to the inimitable JtC and Joe for creating this wonderful place, filled with so many smart people. I'm particularly thankful to Big Al and Cassiodorus and the others who always make me question my assumptions and beliefs, and to the outstanding writers and thinkers who have assembled here.

I've been in and out since joining in March, but hope to be here more consistently in 2017. I need this community to help me cope with the upcoming changes in this country and the world, and look to the good folks here to help me make sense of the big changes we're going to see. I also hope we can give JtC and Joe the support they need to maintain and build our online home.
