Saturday Open Thread - 10/31/26: Odds and Ends

Good morning, good people! Hope you are all in fine fettle this Saturday morning!
A bit rainy here, but it is needed. Errands have been run, and we can stay out of it.
Grocery prices are holding steady and shelves are still well stocked. Nevertheless, we did prep some and got 3 days of beer, as recommended. You just never know.
Friday morning, I was to meet an elderly couple at the courthouse to get the info for their wills.
While waiting, I visited with my old friend/client, the country maintenance manager. Seems one of his best county employee pals was also a county deputy, who came up to join us. We talked about the food stocking warnings, the implement of the draft starting in December. Then, it got super interesting.
The deputy is Ukrainian, has lived here 7 1/2 yrs, spoke of being in the Ukie Army, raised in the Soviet Union, and so on. When I talked about how the Russian military taught patriotism vs. ours, which is making money for the MIC and bankers, his eyes widened. When I told him I had visited Russia and 5 or 6 former Soviet countries, that I fully understood Russia won WII, and we just jumped in at the last moment to be the hegemon thereafter, he gave me a hug, said he had never heard that said in this country before. He said we needed at least 4 hours to chat over some Irish whiskey and a cigar, and I told him one day, we will just do that.
My maintenance guy will try to set it up.
Woohoo!
I wish we could get a few folks together with him and learn some damn truths about the world.
And then, there was a tremendous Vinnie Vulture drama this week.
First of all, Vinnie is a black vulture.
JtC and I were driving to town Tuesday, and saw at least 30 turkey vultures circling in the sky a mile from the house. Not good.
On Wednesday, there were a few nibbling on road kill in the ditch down the road. On Thursday morning, a dozen or so were scoping out Vinnie and his empty pans of food and water in the back pasture. Not good.
They flew off and then we gave Vinnie his food, but before he was finished, several of the turkey vultures flew in and ran him off and finished his meal. Not good.
JtC yelled loudly and chased them away 2 or 3 times, I chased them away once. Vinnie ran off too in the confusion and was traumatized. Not good.
Frightened, Vinnie left the back pasture, ran to the front yard and perched on a limb, but when JtC went to check on him, he jumped to the ground and scampered out the front gate, crossed the highway, and disappeared in the neighbor's pasture. Really not good.
That night we sort of paced the floor for several hours, wondering if we had scared him off for good. The only positive thing about this was that limb he perched on is about 8 ft. high. He had to fly to get on it. Something good.
Friday morning during coffee talk, we were wondering if he would ever come back and if he could live on his own having run off into the woods across the road the way he did. We also wondered if we did more harm than good by yelling at the turkey vultures and scaring him as well. And then, much to our surprise, he comes walking through the front gate, down to the back pasture, stares at his food pan like, wtf, man? Really, really good.
We can only hope the turkey vultures, in the future, forget about the free food and go elsewhere to hunt for it.
Well, this is an open thread, so drop in any info on any subject you wish to share with your friends here. Every one of us learned something this week. We did. Every one of us latched on to something positive and maybe hopeful. We also got mud in our face, lied to, and fought back.
Let 'er rip!

Once again, good morning!
There is all kinds of events happening in this world that will interest us, possibly affect us, maybe eradicate us, but there are also sweet and loving moments captured on the intertubes, so we mustn't neglect them.
Your turn, friends!

I watched a video clip this week
showing a CEO of a huge MIC corporation giving a speech to his shareholders. Ratheon? Lockheed Martin? At any rate, the corporation had won a military contract to produce the war material, and stocks soared.
What made me ill was that he said that his was not a one-time event, but that it is the future, the way it will always be. Making money from mass slaughter is a real money maker.
This James Corbett video delves into real war economies and the total disassociation with morality.

Good morning...
A warm 59F at dawn today. We may get a bit of rain tomorrow, but we're due a real rain Wed. The timing worked out well, I just got the camper top off the truck, so I can get a load of manure early next week. With the sweet potatoes dug, we're ready to manure, mulch, and put the garden to bed for the winter. We do have one bed of greens, cabbage, broccoli and such which we'll tend this winter.
Happy Halloween to those who celebrate mid-autumn (half way point between the equinox and the solstice). The holiday has a long and interesting history.
We plan to build a fire this afternoon, and come back to the house at dark to treat ourselves to a steak dinner and a glass or two of wine. The time change is tonight, so it will be light earlier. Across the time cusp in GA it is still dark at 7:30 AM, but sunrise will shift to about 6:30AM there tomorrow. I prefer standard time, but wish TPTB would opt for one or the other on a permanent basis.
All the talking heads seem to think an new round of Iran strikes are inevitable. God(dess) help us all, if that is the case.
Well thanks for the OT and the Vinnie update!

Good morning, Lo!
I hate time change. I am curious if it will matter that much in my semi-retirement phase. Of course, I am not gardening, and may not really notice it.
It is a little cooler here, but there is still a barely noticeable difference in summer and fall.
Fire pit and steaks? sigh...
Enjoy your weekend, dear friend!

Hey, good morning
.
Glad Vinnie remembered his food bowl. Must have had
some fun playing in the woods like that. Enjoying watching
team R sweating bullets about Tuesday. Wonder what dirty tricks
they have up their sleeves. We are a blue state so do not expect
many surprises. Still rooting for Independents where I can.
Glad you befriended a Slav over here. A free exchange of ideas
is a good first start to mutual understanding.
Thanks for the O & E and happy Halloween!
Zionism is a social disease
Good morning Cap'n, thanks for adding that classic.

Good morning, Cap'n!
This county is one of the least populated in Texas. Our county sheriff's office probably has less than 30 employees. The odds of hiring an ex-pat from the USSR is a kazillion to 1.
We didn't have a chance to get into the weeds, but since he left Ukraine after the Maidan coup, I suspect he was a Russian speaking target of the Bandera gangs.
Vinnie appears between 8 and 9am to get fed. It is now 10:38 am, and no Vinnie sighting. Did he decide he could make it on his own now? This has been an incredible experience for us.
Smooth sailing, Cap'n! If the Blues take control, we get out of the Iran conflict and shift the money to fight in Ukraine. These progressive who care so much for the little people do not give a shit about paying Ukies to get slaughtered for Democracy.

Good morning, otc. What a fun and action packed
column. Good luck to Vinnie, glad he's doing more of less ok, but where is his flock. Black vultures do sometimes hang out together and feed together it is still best if Vinnie has his own flock. Black vultures have a mediocre sense or smell, they watch turkey vultures, who have a fantastic one, to find out where the chow is and then join them at the feast. They are more aggressive, though smaller, so this generally works out fine for them, but Vinnie needs some other black vultures to socialize with.
The Draft isn't coming back any time soon. Back in the "Good Old Days"™ you had to personally go register with the "not so selective service" who would issue you a paper draft card suitable for burning at the time and place of your choosing with such ceremony as you saw fit. Come December, they will automatically enroll potential cannon fodder and add them to the database. I don't know whether or not physical cards will be issued or not. BUT, there can be no draft without Congress passing some sort of act reinstating it and getting the then sitting warmonger in chief to sign it. It is alleged that the military brass oppose making any attempt in that direction until such time as extreme conditions such as an ongoing war with a "Near peer adversary" exist. This raises the question of how and by whom near-peer adversary is defined:
1) Self image version; Russia, China, possibly come coalitions of lesser powers
2) Reality version; Somali-war lords, Iran, the Houthis, Afghanistan, and any state with any kind of military that cannot safely, easily, and readily be carpet bombed sufficient to destroy all life within its borders.

Good morning, el!
Vinnie's flock had a committee meeting, flew away, and have not returned. They seem to have assessed he was not gonna be a helpful member. His mate stopped feeding him after that meeting.
He didn't show up for his meal this morning, but he has appeared to be perched on a fallen tree truck. He's still here.
Those turkey vultures can eat his food if we just put in the pan and leave. At night, a coon or possum or fox would eat it. We worried the turkey vultures would see the pattern and make feeding Vinnie impossible. So far, they have moved on down the road.
Well, given our WWII weapons and strategies, anybody is a near-peer. The Ukie deputy said being drafted made him a man and instilled in him patriotism and that it would be good for Americans. I countered that our wars were to make weapons manufacturers wealthy. It is notable I asked him where he came from. He said the USSR. It was only after I asked him which country that he mentioned Ukraine. Oh, I would love to pick his brain!
I read a funny meme: Don't ruin Trick or Treat by handing out chocolate covered Brussel sprouts.
Take good care of your guests this evening!

I hope your get together with the deputy
from Ukraine goes well. It's sounds like it might because of his positive reaction to your viewpoint. Meeting a person in Texas who has actually been to Eastern Europe, including Russia, is also a kazillion to 1.
But I have wondered about this. My husband and I have chanced to meet a young guy from Ukraine in the past year, and I wanted so much to share with him our point of view. But I held back. We only let him know that we think about Ukraine and the people of Ukraine every day and that it's extremely important to us. He held back too, saying only that, "it's complicated."
What held me back was realizing that the chances of our government letting anyone into this country from the Donbas were nonexistent, and that refugees from western Ukraine could be of any perspective, politically. It's complicated for sure.
Good aftenoon, LW!
Yeah, he was shocked to learn I had been to so many of the former Soviet bloc countries.
I know what you mean about discussing Ukraine with a Ukrainian. I'd prefer if he disclosed his position on the conflict and history of the Ukraine before I stated mine.
Keep us informed if you ever get your Ukraine acquaintance to open up about his experiences. I'll do the same on my new friend.
Meanwhile, rumors fly that the Spain train crash was due to sabotage. Maybe I can post something later today.
I think I may get into the kitchen and cook up a pot of purple hull peas with some pork, and enjoy it for some lunches this week. It's the little things in life, ain't it, chica?
Have a great weekend!
