There are people working today
And many people worked long into the night, yesterday.
My son's employer is closed, but re-opens tomorrow at 6:00 AM. He worked yesterday from 5:30 AM until 2:00 Pm, so at least he was free to attend the big family event my brother and sister-in-law hold every year. Tomorrow he is back at it.
So, please remember that many of us of the 99 percent are not able to be with their friends and family today.
Meanwhile, those flush with more money than they need will likely spend today giving and receiving presents that they don't need or taking vacations to exotic locales the rest of us will never have the opportunity to enjoy.
For me, I already received my best present ever - my wife out of the hospital and back with those who love her. Far more important than any "thing" I might receive and probably forget about within a week or a month.
As some of you may recall, I have asked people not to give me stuff this year. I really have no need for more stuff, and though it's nice to receive a present on which someone spent time and thought and effort (and money, of course), I can think of so many better ways all that cash for this or that could be used to help others. Which is one reason what ever people do give me will go toward a donation to The Willow Domestic Violence Center. Hopefully they will give me money, but if not I will exchange any gifts I can to up the donation.
The tradition of giving gifts for Christmas goes back to the story of the Magi, or the Three Wise Men, who came bearing gifts for the Baby Jesus, as described in the Gospel of Matthew. It's a myth or legend, of course, meant to show that even other nations recognized that Jesus was the Son of God. In short, what today we would call propaganda or "Fake News." Still, the holiday we call Christmas did serve to remind people that love for others was an essential part of Jesus' teaching. In the past, at least among the poor, gifts were hand made and often sorely needed by the recipient: food, clothes, etc.
Today, however, in America, it's been twisted into a consumerist orgy, and one of the most stressful times of the year for many people, many of whom are strapped financially. Nonetheless, they feel compelled to buy presents for their family and friends, even if it means going onto debt, maxing out their credit cards in a essentially surreal exercise in linking love and affection with material objects, many of which, as I said people really don't need.
So, if I may offer a piece of unsolicited advice, let us all try to wean ourselves from this materialistic and consumerist trap that benefits the rich and does little to help the people to whom they pay slave wages. If you give gifts, make it a meaningful one, whether to a loved one, or to the far too many people in need in our communities, millions of them in this most wealthiest of nations. A gift of your time, your service or money to help the many good and hard working charities (and check to make sure the charity is worthy of your gift) that cannot fill all the needs our government and our society should provide to the most vulnerable among us, but has failed to do so for so long.
And if you do wish to buy something for yourself or thers, buy from your friends such as the gifted artists and artisans of the Caucus 99 Catalog, as I did when I purchased a photographic print from snoopydawg for my wife. Snoopy, thank you. The gift of your talent enabled me to provide my wife with something special she will always treasure when she sees on her wall, a flower blooming in the desert.
Blessings to all of you here at c99.
Steve

You are in time out for the day.
Only allowed to drink rum and eggnog for the day. Then tomorrow you can get out and sharpen some long knives. You are going to need them in the new year.

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

Question
Since Christmas is a religious holiday celebrating the birth of Christ, why do non believers celebrate it?

Money
Christmas has been turned into a money making machine for business and it seems nearly everyone in America, with few exceptions drank the Koolaid years ago that we must buy, buy, buy to be happy this time of year.
That's the short answer.

my gifts to my kids this year:
two used, high-quality musical instruments from craigslist, merited by their increasing skills; a case of top-notch locally brewed beer that is unaffordable on a student budget; and two gadgets that will assist one kid in his studies and allow him to repair other gadgets instead of throwing them away.

My over-the-top gift for son-in-law was an RC He-filled Nemo
He is protector of their two little dogs and 2 larger cats. But I have seen horns under that short haircut on occasion. So they will fill-er-up at a grocery and drive Nemo around the house, freaking out all creatures. I told them if it causes mass panic to return to me, and I can terrorize my pup with a 4' long floating Nemo. I, too, can be capable of enrichment. She ate the plug off another vacuum yesterday, I have already spent $70 on replacement cords. Next move will be a re-wiring appliances for Dummies manual. I must.master.simple.wiring. New Years resolution. Empowering.

Plus, I handle the cords. I will consider that in some variation.

Many peoples have celebrated the Winter Solstice
It's a sign of hope (that Winter will end). Today, many non-believers celebrate the cultural Christmas - Peace on Earth/Goodwill towards Men.
I've seen lots of changes. What doesn't change is people. Same old hairless apes.
Merry Christmas Steven and the rest of the c99ers
Steven, were you able to find a frame for it and I am curious about her reaction to it.
But as you said the best gift is that she is back home with you. I hope she continues to feel better.

Christmas a "consumerist orgy" - perfect description!
And yes, I know about the people working today. Thanksgiving day too. At Dollar General, the guy said he had to work Thanksgiving day, but would make time and a half if he worked more than four hours - guess how long everyone was scheduled? Yep - exactly four hours.
My kids got $50 each. Probably the least I've ever spent on them, and had it not been for the cash I was given as a gift, they wouldn't have gotten anything. But, the gathering was wonderful! We played a silly game that had me laughing so hard I cried and had to run to the bathroom before I peed my pants. Way better than shopping, for sure!
So happy your dear wife is home! Excellent gift, that!
Christmas Day will be
Open next. And, hell, why not? Consumers followed Black Friday to Black Thanksgiving; only a matter of time before they're "Open All Day Christmas Day!" (for you slacker fucks).

I made all my gifts this year.
Started on them last Febuary. I have a mom, two kids and their spouses. I enjoyed every minute if it. Growing up in a rural area if we wanted something in general we had to figure out how to make it. So I have a few skills some very rusty. My mom got a new afghan for her chair. The kids each got a sweater and a hat.
I also grafted a dozen fruit trees for my son in law and daughter to make an espalier fence. I made my son and daughter in law an outdoor fire pit using an old obsolete propane tank.
I enjoyed every minute of the creation. As I made them I thought of each what they mean to me, how impressed I am with each of them. My mothers extra gift was a drive around town tonight looking at Christmas lights. At 96 things no longer enhance her life, new experiences mean more.
Thinking I'll do it all again next year.
Hope you are well and wife improving
My father worded at a rare bird. It was a textile plant in NC that was a union shop. He was a shop steward not that it's particularly germane. With a union they could bid for holidays and vacations. He always worked bid to work on Christmas because they made 2.5 times (paid for 20 hours) in one shift for holiday pay.
Five till midnight. A final Merry Christmas. Despite the gloom and doom it's been a good Christmas this year at the homestead.
