Good morning 99percenters!
Today is the day that Hollywood falls all over itself to congratulate it's own existence. Will the Academy miss new talent again...
This year's nominees for best picture are:
- American Sniper
- Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)
- Boyhood
- The Grand Budapest Hotel
- The Imitation Game
- Selma
- The Theory of Everything
- Whiplash
Which is your favorite?
Or let's talk about whatever is on your mind today...
Comments
I don't play anymore.
It's all become too disgusting for me. The riches, the gift bags, the egos. The pretend liberalness of Hollywood.
It's funny how I can't even watch that kind of stuff anymore. To top it off they've got that American Sniper movie in there.
I wouldn't even be able to take listening to that. I'd rather have a boil transplant.
That said, we all have our diversions, our entertainment we like. I like certain things, like sports, that others
could pick apart as well.
I guess it's pick your poison.
I always watch the Oscars
but not like we used to years ago. We used to have parties. Once that didn't work out well because I friends were cheering for
a movie we didn't like. But the food was good. Then I used to invite my daughter over. But now it doesn't seem like something to celebrate anymore.
Last year there was "Zero Dark Thirty" a propaganda movie about extrajudicial killing?
Today "American Sniper?" I have not seen one good review. Rotten Tomatoes had it at 27% The books on which it is based have been trashed.
The only movie I have seen was The Grand Budapest Hotel which is more of a comedy/farce. It was entertaining though. I found the Guardian has the best articles on the Oscars. Here's a really funny one of "50 Shades of Grey." Did you know that Eastwood used plastic dolls for the baby? and apparently it is very obvious.

Are links to these two places on the to do list? You guys have done such a great job on the site, it would be a good way to help promote it.

I love movies
but not Hollywood blockbusters that glorify violence, mayhem and horror. I don't like the Oscars they are as bad as the Grammys. Long ago we used to watch the Oscars but when the big movies became war propaganda with fiery blowing up shit up along with huge freaking guns I looked else where for entertainment. This year however I actually like some of the movies that are nominated.
I'm a huge Wes Anderson fan and to me the Grand Budapest Hotel is one of his best movies. I loved it visually and thought it was good absurd black humor along with a tall tale about fascism and time that is timeless. Ralph Finnes was really good as the hotel consignor and so was the narrator Zero. The bad guys, Adrain Brody, Willaim Dafoe entertainingly evil and the heroes were touchingly human. We don't see many movies on the big screen but this one was made to be seen in a theater.
We just rented Boyhood a film by another director I like. We took a 4 mile walk yesterday after cleaning house and we were both too tired to watch it. So once again I've only seen one of the contenders. My son and wife gave us a Regal Cinema gift card for Christmas and were going to use it to see Birdman. so this year there are three movies on the list that interest me enough to look at.
If American Sniper wins, the Oscars are dead to me. they pretty much are anyway so it's no biggie. Beck wining the best album of the year was a pleasant surprise but in a way winning both the Oscars and the Grammys signifies the slide into mediocrity of the artist who wins, a dubious achievement. The new artist of the year Grammy winner always makes me cringe. There was one pop song and artist up for a Grammy this year that I liked, It's All About The Bass, I'm glad in a way that Megan Trainor didn't win as she might just turn into another megaarena shallow female entertainer.
I'm also going to see Tim Burton's Big Eyes when it hits the cheap arty movie houses in my city. We rent or take out of the library a lot of DVD's as we do not have cable or a functioning TV. I had forgotten how much fun it is to sit in the dark and watch the magic on the big silver screen.
I vote for The Grand Budapest Hotel.
The Grand Budapest Hotel
is the only one I've seen. I thought it was interesting and nicely done. Watching it on a big screen would have probably made it more enjoyable but we rarely go to the movie theater. We borrow DVDs from our local library instead which usually means we see them some months later. I'm not sure how GBH made to the library shelves so quickly. I guess it's flown below the radar. In fact I was surprised it was nominated for best picture - only because I'd seen it.

The Grand Budapest Hotel
I enjoyed it but was surprised that it was nominated. I should watch it again.
Here is the best review I've ever read. I haven't seen the movie "Boyhood" yet and am really looking forward to it especially after this review.

Boyhood
We rented it Sunday and tonight were watching it. My husband, Shahryar loved the Before Midnight romantic series and I loved Bernie, Dazed and Confused, Slacker, and A Scanner Darkly an animated movie. I just found out he also made Fast Food Nation. All in all a filmmaker I respect. Without TV we kind of grope around as far as new releases of movies goes. Birdman the winner were using our Christmas movie gift card to see on the big screen. Lot's of interesting films out there right now. I confess to wanting to watch Nightcrawler and Inherent Vice. Think I'll settle for the DVD's of both these movies. Fun thread for a movie lover. Forgot Mr. Turner another must see now film on my list.
Boyhood is good.
Quite good, actually.

we're watching it tonight
After reading about it today I'm looking forward to seeing this movie. I'm glad to hear you add your recommendation to the glowing reviews I've been reading all weekend.
What roles win the Oscar?
Fusion.com analyzed the roles played by Oscar winners, going back to the 1st Academy Awards, and found definite gender differences.
For males, the top five Oscar-winning roles are:
1. Criminal (13%)
2. Military (11%)
3. Entertainer (9%)
4 (tie). Arts and Literature (8%) and Royalty/Nobility (8%)
For women, the top five roles are:
1. Wife (16%)
2. Entertainer (14%)
4. Widow (11%)
4. Blue Collar (11%)
5. Socialite/Heiress (8%)
No Best Actress winner has won for playing a journalist or someone in the military, occupations that account for a combined total of 13 Best Actors. No Best Actors have won for playing boyfriends or prostitutes, although two girlfriend roles and six prostitute roles have won Best Actress Oscars. In addition, a Best Actress hasn’t played an entrepreneur or business owner since the 1940s, while four Best Actors have in the last 20 years alone.
Bottom line: Women, as well as people of color, have a legitimate beef with the Academy.
almost one male prostitute winner
Jon Voight was nominated for Midnight Cowboy but lost to *ugh* John Wayne (True Grit)
Fun fact: "Midnight Cowboy" was the only X-rated Best Picture
That record is likely to stand for all time because the MPAA changed its "X" rating to "NC-17". One reason is that the MPAA never trademarked "X", and porn producers began slapping a "XXX" label on their films. The MPAA has since trademarked its other ratings, and recently went after a brewery that released a "Rated R" ale. I'm waiting to see whether Molson XXX gets hit with a cease-and-desist from some porn king.
Just ran across this...
in my Evening Blues news search:
Thanks, JTC--this Dude nails some points. Bookmarked. N/T
Everyone thinks they have the best dog, and none of them are wrong.
Hey Mollie...
I finally figured out why I couldn't see twitter pics and vids, Ghostery was blocking it.
Glad you figured it out. And thanks for
posting the link to "Ghostery," since my first thought was, "What the heck is that, LOL!"

great hijack JTC I love it!
I wrote a comment on gjohnsits post about the latest scary extremists jhadist groups that are going to blow up The American Mall if we don't fund der Homeland security right now. I liked their logos good graphic design by whoever cooked them up. I diverse. I somehow after composing a brilliant comment including the Ukrainian insanity got ate due to log in weirdness. Anyway I agree with your pithy comment regarding the Nazis in Kiev we helped install and are arming and supporting. John Kerry has been disgusting throughout this whole ?
What the hell is with the reheating of the Cold War? Even The Guardian my main news source these days refers to the Ukrainian rebels as 'The Russian Aggressors'. Bejeezus i know a freaking Nazis when I see one and the current American NATO backed government in Kiev is bad news. Fascists are not that hard to spot. Thanks for the interruption of the Oscar discussion for some reality. Actually this makes my Oscar pick, The Grand Budapest Hotel even more relevant as it addresses what happens when fascist fucks start closing borders and calling anyone who objects to their takeover as fair game to kill. Kerry has truly disgusted me with his Send Me routine. Thanks again Johnny.
How come I keep getting thrown off and cannot log in without re-registering? Glad to have a chance on this diary to mouth off about the comment I made this morning that got ate earlier today on gjohnsits 'who's the enemy' diary. Got to say that who we support is way more scary then the insurgents who fight the US, our allies and the regimes we install.
Oh, you saw that.
I started to write a diary here twice about the seriously creepy pro-DHS rhetoric over there...but I try not to bring too much DK over here. Ugh!

I told the truth about Daily Kos
about what I think runs the site and that is: homage to Obama and it did not go over well. For example what's coming up is his veto against one pipeline Keystone XL and i'm pretty sure that he will be praised as a great environmentalist president when that happens. Forget that he just opened up the Atlantic coast to deep water drilling, took the wolves off the endangered species list etc. etc. No time to make a list at this moment.
To thine own self be true.
I'd say sometime later this year or early next year
depending on the political situation, I'll ask for reinstatement on DK, or find some other way back on there.
Then I will post articles titled, "Obama is a War Criminal", "Hillary Clinton is a War Criminal", "The Democratic Party Support
U.S. Imperialism and the Resultant War Crimes", etc.
We'll see how long I last but I'll try to do it in a factual manner. It's all true.
I'm just waiting for the right time. I'm serious about this Clinton/Bush election thing. It has to be countered.
