United Nations L.41 - Nuclear Weapons Ban

ban nukes.jpg

Information Alert in case you haven't heard. The vote is expected to take place this Thursday. Mostly it's the little guys taking on the big guys.

"The most important disarmament initiative in decades will face its biggest test this week at the United Nations. UN resolution L.41 calls for negotiations to begin in 2017 on a treaty to de-legitimize and legally ban nuclear weapons. L.41 is expected to pass."

http://www.psr.org/take-action/security/secretary-kerry-take-the.html

".41 is the document number for a resolution that will establish multilateral negotiations for a legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons. We have never had such a resolution. We have never had anything close.

None of the nuclear-armed states support this resolution. They are legally obligated to eliminate their nuclear arsenals, and have been for 46 years, since the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) entered into force. Instead, however, they are investing billions of dollars into nuclear weapon modernisation.

Some of their allies that support the retention of nuclear weapons—because they believe that the ability to threaten the rest of the world with massive nuclear violence provides them with security—are torn. Many of their parliaments and publics are demanding they support a ban on nuclear weapons, but their state apparatus are resistant.

These governments are quite upset about L.41. Some of them warn about the unspeakable horrors that banning nuclear weapons will bring to the world—destroying the NPT and the nuclear non-proliferation regime; furthering regional and international tensions; etc. Underpinning this line of arguments is the assertion that a nuclear weapon ban treaty will not have any positive effect whatsoever on nuclear disarmament whilst angering the nuclear-armed states so greatly that they might become even more intransigent about retaining nuclear weapons and make even fewer commitments to disarmament and that they might even use nuclear weapons or start a nuclear war. We have been treated to various formulations of these overwrought warnings for more than two years."

So this could be big. But then again, what treaty has the United States ever honored or international law has it obeyed? I hate to be skeptical, after all there's no reason for it. Maybe the world really is changing. Maybe the United Nations can actually be an international force for good instead of a farce controlled by the U.S. and it's willing and forced allies mirroring the impact of U.S. imperialism. Maybe I'll wake up tomorrow morning and my mortgage will be paid off.

While that's going on, Obama's attack dog, the despicable warmonger Defense Secretary Carter is again threatening to blow up the planet if the world doesn't obey the United States Empire. Where the hell did this guy come from? I don't even want to know. He's a piece of work, no doubt. I bet Clinton keeps him on, you watch.

"Defense Secretary Ash Carter warned Wednesday that any attack on American allies or use of nuclear weapons by North Korea would be met with an “overwhelming” U.S. response.

“The U.S. commitment to the defense of South Korea is unwavering. This includes our commitment to provide extended deterrence, guaranteed by the full spectrum of U.S. defense capabilities,” Carter said in opening remarks.

“Make no mistake, any attack on America or our allies will not only be defeated, but any use of nuclear weapons will met with an overwhelming and effective response,” he said."

Well hey, it's something. It's the thought that counts right? Ban nuclear weapons. An agreement to talk about banning nuclear weapons. I can see this passing and talks being scheduled. But the world as it is and the primary belligerents led by the U.S. decide to actually ban nuclear weapons? Kind of like the ceasefire talks regarding the illegal U.S. Syria War? Hello! Hillary Clinton is set to become the U.S. Empire Dictator, ushering in the Clinton regime. She'll probably start World War III before any talks can take place.

I wonder who Clinton will have as Secretary of State? I'm sure another supremo liar like herself and John Kerry. It's in the job description, the ability to lie about anything and everything without remorse. Sounds like the job description for a sociopath.

This is the time for citizens to push this however. It's a worthy effort and needs to be done. How we can hold our government accountable is another story. Here's the petition from the Physician's for Social Responsibility (PSR) site linked above.

"Dear Secretary of State John Kerry,

Nuclear weapons constitute one of the gravest threats to human health. Fortunately, people of the world are awakening to this fact and taking positive action. Over 100 nations support negotiating a treaty to stigmatize and prohibit nuclear weapons due to their unacceptable humanitarian impact, just as other weapons of mass destruction have been banned.

The United States should seize this opportunity to promote President Obama's vision of a world free of nuclear weapons. Please instruct the U.S. team at the United Nations First Committee to co-sponsor and support Resolution L.41: "Taking forward multilateral nuclear disarmament negotiations".

Signed"

While the part about "Obama's vision of a world free of nuclear weapons" is hypocritical considering his biggest monetary initiative is the trillion dollar nuclear weapons upgrade program, it is addressed to War Criminal John Kerry so what else could they say.

they might not have the veto power. Thus the full court press to try to change hearts and minds. The article from PSR indicates it's likely to pass, I don't know. Something for us to watch. This is just an agreement to hold talks specifically to ban nukes, easy to go along with and pull out of later.

I think this is General Assembly so they might not have the veto power.

Unfortunately, false.

The permanent members of the Insecurity Council are all nuclear armed, and all possess a full veto against anything the General Assembly might enact. This is why there will never be UN supervision of US elections. The first and most important surviving veto is that of the US, and you can take it to the bank that veto would be applied to any attempt to have our elections supervised.

Bisbonian is correct.

Unfortunately.

I'd venture to guess there are many of us who want disarmament. Thank you for getting the word out to me. I'll share it with my circle.

I hope it gets teeth. TPTB are walking around with complete abandon. It's up to us to stop them. I'm told the 1% are afraid of us, thus the many distractions. We are waking up; more and more are awakening. I'm glad the millenials are among us. They are the future of this country, heck, this planet!

that the Empire had no plans whatsoever thank you of changing its policy of using a nuclear weapon whenever it damn well wants. Just last month. Kind of conflicts with this effort doesn't it.

"US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said Tuesday the Pentagon has no plans to pursue a "no-first-use" nuclear weapons policy.

His remarks at a nuclear research facility in New Mexico follow media reports saying President Barack Obama was weighing an overhaul of longstanding US nuclear policy, including by pledging to never conduct the first strike in a nuclear conflict.

"It has been the policy of the United States for a long time to extend its nuclear umbrella to friends and allies, and thereby to contribute to the deterrence of conflict and the deterrence of war," Carter said."

"This chatter that we intend to attack the Baltics is idiotic. Why is NATO stationing weapons and equipment there? Imagine what would happen to them in the case of a crisis. The help offered by NATO is not symbolic help for the Baltic states. It is a provocation. If NATO initiates an encroachment -- against a nuclear power like ourselves -- it will be punished."

Here they are sizing each other up for nuclear war and this effort to ban nukes is happening. This is pretty interesting.

We all know nuclear weapons testing should have ceased that day. The Trinity Shot was the optimal test. Subsequent detonations had no real scientific merit.

Wandering about in cyberspace I notice many commenting about their impoverished educational experiences. As a teacher I always sought to "make the lesson relevant". I wish I had thought of creating this graphical representation. It is worth more than an uncountable number of lectures and thousands of books trying to explain the sheer insanity of weapons testing.

Stuff like this is so far removed from most people's experience, they cannot relate enough to have an informed opinion. Growing up downstream of Hanford Atomic Works and downwind of the Umatilla Army Depot, I was more fully aware of these issues than most.

As the US puts up something like 25% of the annual budget of the UN, there in no chance that the UN will go against Uncle Scam in any meaningful way. They'd lose a lot of operating money if they did.

https://www.hrw.org/news/2016/06/29/suspend-saudi-arabia-un-human-rights...

Despite well-documented violations by the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, there has been no accountability. Saudi Arabia has failed to conduct credible, impartial and transparent investigations into possible war crimes and has used its position on the Human Rights Council, aided by its allies, to effectively obstruct the creation of an independent international investigation, as urged by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. A national commission of inquiry set up by the internationally recognized Yemeni government, backed by Saudi Arabia, has to date failed to carry out credible investigations into violations in the conflict. Moreover, Saudi Arabia has used the threat of withdrawing funds from critical UN programs to compel the UN Secretary-General to remove the coalition from his “List of Shame” for killing and maiming children and attacking schools and hospitals in Yemen. We call on the General Assembly to suspend Saudi Arabia’s rights of membership in the Human Rights Council until it not only ends unlawful attacks in Yemen, but also conducts a credible and impartial investigation that meets international standards or agrees to – and cooperates with – an independent international inquiry into alleged violations in Yemen.

You mean well, but please don't co-opt this sacred custom of calling presente at the funeral and deaths of those killed by repressive regimes, with US and CIA help, I may add. Mostly at Hillary's tutor, mentor and BFF Henry Kissinger's directive. Please don't. Tom Hayden was neither Latino nor a martyr. He lived a full life which was not cut short because it was not convenient to the interests of oligarchs.
