Baja Arizona Meetup

Yesterday Azazello and I met up at Patagonia Lake, a few miles north of Nogales. We did talk, some, about the current political situation, and listened to the wind through the desert willows, but mostly we played with boats. Because there is nothing -- absolutely nothing -- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.
This was Azazello's first time in a kayak. His wife took some nice pictures for us, but declined the offer to pilot one of the tippy craft.

Jealousy waves emanating from Upstate NY
I have wanted a river kayak for years. I even had the place for it, water off the lawn. Now it's "can I pick it up to put on the car" worries. I used to canoe. Once on the Ohio River near Louisville, in my foolhardy teens.
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
These are really light.
The yellow one, about 28 pounds. More like 35 for the red one. Skin (nylon) on frame, semi replicas of native craft.

Good to see you Bisbonian
Did you build the boats? They sure look nice.
don't think you would want to try this on our local river with them...
here's a more typical run...
All that will have to wait for winter, it has been so dry this summer this is what the canyon looks like:
Here's a normal fall
We are in an extreme drought.
Looks like y'all had a good day. All the best!

Thanks for the gorgeous pictures, Lookout.
No, these are not whitewater boats (nor am I a whitewater guy!)...but more traditional ocean kayaks. Both have been in salt water. And yes, I built them, and two more...and two more on the way! It's an obsession.
Hoping for lots of rain, for you.

Am I correct that you live in the desert?
But I understand the human yearn for water. To play in.

Yes, I live in the desert.
Not entirely my choice. I would live much closer to water, given the choice. Even this little lake is 80+ miles away.

Would you believe that Arizona
has the highest number of boat registrations in the entire nation, per capita?
Fun fact I learned when we registered our sailboat here (though the boat itself was waiting for us in Florida).

Mine are
"unregistered".

Thanks again ...
We had a great time except for the Patagonia Marshall and the "criminal speeding" ticket. That place has sure changed over the years. We also made a new discovery. The HQ of the Empire Ranch is now a historic site. It's off 83 just a few miles north of Sonoita Jctn, pretty cool. I put a comment about the Meet-Up in the series I used to write for over at that one fan site if you're interested (trigger warning): CUA comment

We wanted decent healthcare, a living wage and free college.
The Democrats gave us Biden and war instead.
Looks like fun
I've been in one-person kayak/canoe just once............. on the Thames.
It was fun, but I prefer to paddle with others in the same vessel. So we don't sink.
Gëzuar!!
from a reasonably stable genius.
Here's my kayak!!
Both photos taken by me on my phone at Paulina Lake which is in a blown out vulcano. Totally wicked and my favorite place to kayak-meditate.
And yes, I drink coffee on my runs. It's a re-used cup. My yak wouldn't be mine if it didn't have a cuppie holder.
Edit: that's my spouse dude in the kayak in the photo. He seems to think he can kayak and fly fish at the same time. I am on the side that if you are in a kayak you kayak. There is no fishing.
