What I dream of is an art of balance, of purity and serenity devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter - a soothing, calming influence on the mind, rather like a good armchair which provides relaxation from physical fatigue. ~Henri Matisse~
I do not think I have ever been this tired. Not after a wrestling tournament, motorcycle race or extended party. I have had to summon strength to prepare the last few Friday Open Threads. I just tell myself ->
I arrived early, while C99 was still festival seating, and managed to finagle the Friday Open Thread. I am mainly a bluesman, and wanker, but I love the funk and enjoy putting quarters in the juke box. I intend to exercise my squatter's rights and hold onto the Friday Open Thread. Besides, I know a few lurkers who come here only to get their Sweetie update. So today, let's do some funky wanking.
I have been feeling self conscious about not keeping up with C99ers or engaging in dialogue. I intend to revert to my snarky self, someday. Until then ->
Sweetie is hanging in there. She has trouble breathing, can not take oral nutrition, her digestive system is waning, we are working on clearing up bed sores and communications is halting. I hold her, whenever I can. Holding her can be a little disconcerting. She has lost all muscle tone and I can feel her bones. I worry about hurting her when I dress her or perform a transfer.
Sweetie and I used to love to go out for live music. I was the instigator, but Sweetie was always game. We spent our formative years in Pittsburgh where there was a thriving bar band scene and a jazz tradition. Jimmy Ponder held down a regular gig at the Jame's Street Tavern. A worthwhile evening on the North Side.
Every summer home boy George Benson would stop by for a series of shows. In Pittsburgh, this was a big deal. George Benson always sold out. The races mixed and most people dressed up. George never disappointed the crowd.
I don't have a lot to say, mostly because I am sober, and tired. One of these days we will have to take a 420 break and have a few beers while the music plays. In the meantime enjoy the wankers.
Have a smooth weekend!

Yesterday it was Microsoft; now it’s Google, Hillary, & the DNC
The tactics are the same as in the tech wars. Think of Bernie’s popular movement as Linux here, and the Hillary lobby’s wall of power, money, and influence as Microsoft.

Windows 10 Is Spyware On Steroids
It should be renamed Win-Stasi 10. It's like a software version of the teevee show "Monster Inside Me" about people inflicted with parasites.
I shutoff all the private data sharing settings (which are on by default). And there are still sekret telemetry services that run to mine data and phone home to Microsoft. I'm still working on resolutions to problems with their Win10 Anniversary Update. Gawd awful.
I'd switch to Linux in a heartbeat but I'm maintaining some windows apps that only run on Windoze.

I tried Ubuntu as a second OS, never got comfortable
But I was running Win7, my machine came with that installed. I allowed the Win10 upgrade. Weird stuff began to happen, little bells and the cursor blinks out. They did their magic update at the moment that I wanted to search for symptoms of what was happening to me. Unfortunate timing indeed. An hour delay to find out that yes, I was having a gall bladder attack. Would Win10 even permit a second OS (libre software) on the box?

Microsoft Allows Nothing!
Microsoft makes life as difficult as possible for non-Windows users. UEFI and other such "initiatives" by Redmond ensure that only Windows will run on most new machines. They will defend their monopoly any way they can.
There are ways to get around anything Microsoft does. The unfortunate aspect to this is that one does need to be somewhat adept in customizing operating systems and PC hardware settings.
I am not a programmer by any means. I did, however, convert a gaming PC into a Linux desktop without too much effort. I do, however, have many years of Linux experience dating back to before Redmond considered Linux a viable threat. I thus got to learn the tricks in sequence instead of all at once like many are now experiencing.
All I'm saying here is that it can be done. It helps if one has a Linux veteran to help, but even that isn't necessary.

But you did not try on your big machine.
Is that right? Oh we are so caught in webs. I had to buy a new printer because the drivers for the old one ceased to exist, under Win10, btw.

That PC IS My Big Machine
I don't have room for more than one.
Vowing To Oppose Everything Trump Attempts.
I have Libre Office
software. As a Luddite who can run a computer it is a pain in the butt. When my xp melted down I got a new computer an Acer running on windows 7. The geeks down the street who had pronounced the xp dead took my old hard drive out and reinstalled it on the new machine. They installed LibreOffice to replace Microsoft Office which was not salvageable. I do not like it at all. It flings everything all over the place file wise.
I'm not a good enough techie to adapt it to "change it so it does your computing as you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this". Source code is beyond my capability. It looks interesting but man o man it's Greek to me. So I'm breaking down and buying Microsoft Office with Excel. I hate Microsoft as each progressive new version is more automated and idiotic then the last.
My first computer was a Windows 98. I loved it I could move stuff around where I wanted it manually. It was simple. Any software that requires a person to buy tutorials or as with my Adobe software take a class to use it is ridiculous. I lost Adobe Creative Suite when my computer melted but that was actually a blessing in disguise as I went back to using a student version of Corel. Free is a concept I understand but if you cannot deal with programming and are not a geek it does not offer any freedom you can't use it.
Both Adobe and Microsoft suck. Mozilla seems more user friendly and it has over the years been easy to adapted as my browser. I'm sorry to hear Microsoft is sabotaging/infiltrating as if I had any tech skills I would use Linux. The freedom to use and share is much better then having to deal with software controlled by the likes Bill Gates Window's version of automated intelligence.
We may all need to go back to school to learn code skillz
Like you, beyond my ken. So I must rely on people I pay to do such. I should come up with a customizing list to hand them. I sat thru hours of Pagemaker and Photoshop classes. I could never afford them for home use. Every new download of an art program is days on the learning curve. I grow older and more weary. Android on the tablet sucks, usually it's dead because I don't plug it in. iPhone I use, except forget to recharge every other day, Camera works fine.

I use Open Office. It's MS Office compatible and similar,
but free. I have never tried Libre Office, but find Open very usable, so you might try that. The price is right!

"not a good enough techie to adapt it"
Hey you don't have to be a techie, you just have to know one. Like a car, software takes maintenance. I pay mechanics to maintain and fix a car, I pay hackers to maintain and fix my softwares, and I also get tons of non-paid support, information given freely by other users solving problems together. Always found the community support better than most commercial support. I know other people who don't want to make the effort to become involved, be part of something more, so I get it. It is not for everyone... yet. People are still working to make your freedom plug-n-play, one day it will be an easy choice for everyone.
We (user groups) used to have gatherings called Installfests on weekends where people could bring their PCs and we'd help install Linux for them (if possible) and eat pizza together. Now, our local communities are all corporately torn asunder like everything else. No one meets in meat space. The BIGs have wrecked it, they take so much and give so little back, it is disgusting. Locked-down devices rule, lobbyists are killing everything good, it's all political. The Free Software movement needs all kinds of people to step up, not just developers. Writers, artists, musicians, lawyers, everybody, all in it together. Free Software, Free Society.
I really don't want to live where software controls everything, and I have no access to the source code. It is already happening though, the tide seems against transparency everywhere. Even our elections! I understand Luddites and the people who just don't care to participate too, who has time? Or energy? Technology is simply not interesting, I think most people just want to use it and not think about how it uses them. That's "the plan" I guess.
Good luck to all.
Peace
Morning Tim.
Glad you can squeeze us in Tim. Our thoughts are with you and sweetie.

My pleasure. I was happier with my content when I riffed on a theme. I am struggling with both time and motivation.

If you need a break, let us know.
Friday OT will be here for you when you are ready. If on the other hand, you find it somewhat therapeutic once you force yourself to it, your content is fine. All you really need is the OT header and a sentence or two on how you and sweetie are doing. I swear one day I'm only going to put the header in one of mine just to set the precedent. I quit doing them because I was afraid I could find anything or enough intelligent things to say. Finally, I said "fuck it" and volunteered again. " It is what it is" is my new theme.
Take care of both of you. Seriously, let us know if you need a break.

After November we need a vacation.

You got that right
I fixed the date.
The evening feeding, medication, toile ting, hygiene, changing and getting Sweetie into bed routine is usually ~9-10:30. By the time I have her in bed I am thoroughly awake and wired. It is usually midnight before I can get to bed. Lately, I have only been able to sleep 5-6 hous. I creep around the house waiting for Sweetie to wake organically.

He's gaslighting
The reality is that Dr. Jill Stein is the candidate with an African American running mate and privileged people vote for the status quo.
"Please clap." -- Jeb Bush
You have to "check your privilege."
The only way you can do that, of course, is to vote for one of the whitest, most privileged people in the country. Makes sense to me. Here's Ted Rall: counterpunch
We wanted decent healthcare, a living wage and free college.
The Democrats gave us Biden and war instead.
Weird logic there.
Let's see, they're mostly white therefore they must be supporting Stein because of white privilege. Evidently if they supported Clinton they wouldn't be displaying white privilege. I get it.
Of course not
Remember, she is married to the first black president. (I will never forgive Maya Angelou (was it her?) for that idiotic statement.)
Mundus vult decipi, ergo decipiatur.
That's the Clinton spin. Just like voting for Sanders was sexist
I'm not letting anyone else define why I'm voting for Stein. And I'm no millennial. But then, I was no Bernie Bro. I seem to be invisible. Hopefully there are enough like me that TPTB will be unpleasantly surprised on Nov. 8.

An oldie for ya Tim
1973, my senior year in HS. A couple years later I remember my brother, a friend and I scored a pound of Panama Red and took it to our apartment. We sat at the kitchen table and smoked a couple joints and I swear to this day it's the best weed I ever smoked. The talking heads say the strains now are far more potent than back in the day, I say not. The Red, Acapulco Gold, Thaistick, there was some good stuff back then.
I lived in a ...
Mafia town. We had a great supply chain. QPs of Red or Gold Columbian for $90. Remember blonde Lebanese? I had some Maui that was impossible to roll. It would stick to you fingers. Most of the stuff today has significant percentages of Indica. Those old Mexican, Columbian and Jamaican strains were soaring Sativas. The Sativas are really tough to grow inside. They have very high light demands, so most indoor growers are growing some sort of hybrid or Indica. Heh, it is harvest season! I graduated in '76. Back in those days there was a phenomena where good cannabis came out of cure just in time for the holidays.

Wow, talk about chutzpah. That's amazing.
That is totally Orwellian. The U.S. starts a war in Syria right after it's war in Libya, seeking to destroy the country and remove it's government from power, and Kerry has the gall to say THAT!
It's almost like I want to call someone to tell them, "hey, this guy is lying, DO SOMETHING!!"
But there's no one to call.
The U.S. government thought 1984 was an instruction manual.

Hey John, how about our friends in Saudi Arabia? You know the ones that we are helping destroy Yemen??
They have been bombing hospitals in Yemen and other citizens infrastructure since they began bombing them.
Even the UN is saying that SA should be sanctioned, yet you and your boss have come to the defense of SA time after time.
So shut your mouth because someday there may be a second Nuremberg trial and your butt would be in the docket along with your boss.
Scientists are concerned that conspiracy theories may die out if they keep coming true at the current alarming rate.
And what says Kerry about Doctors Without Borders in Kunduz? n/t
Oh, Tim.
Oh Sweetie.
My late husband had bed sores. I gave up all topical ointments and just washed them with a salt water solution from the drugstore counter. Seems that solution replicates the amount of sodium in your blood, spurs cell growth. I shifted him all night, all day to change the pressure points.
At least one of them healed.
Look forward to future days of rest and peace.
"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." ---- William Casey, CIA Director, 1981
Boiling water and salt in the correct proportions and letting it
cool, covered, is another possibility. Not a lot of inconvenience, but probably much cheaper. I had a small, but very deep burn on my foot some years back from a burning cinder and my doctor gave me the proportions. They're probably on the internet.
I do the shifting
I managed to defeat the one on her heel. The base of the spine is tougher. We have been using something affectionately known as butt butter and a diaper. I think the skin lesions are just the tip of the iceberg. I think there is soft tissue bruising that makes it tough to get comfortable,

My husband went from ambulatory to dead too fast
for the bedsore time. Of that, I am grateful. No fun to treat, no good way to communicate with the bearer is worse. Sympathies.
My 96 y/o mother is now MIA with my sister, who refuses to communicate. Not fun at all. The awfuk thing is that she was ambulanced to hospital and THEY RELEASED A WOMAN WHO CAN NO LONGER WALK OR EVEN STAND. From what I heard earlier this week, when communication lines were more open. I am stymied.
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
Exactly, Tim.
I remember putting pillows under him strategically. The only time my husband let his emotions get away from him was a diaper moment that I barely finished, when, due to an explosive bowel movement, I had to do it again. He was just so humiliated. I just talked and laughed and told him what an expert I was becoming at putting a spit shine on an ass, like, who knew? I can't remember the cream I put on him, but it came from an herbal supplement/supply store.
I swear to you, it is a blessing that Sweetie is unaware of what is going on. My guy raised his arm, saw that it was nothing more than skin on bone, said "I do not recognize myself". He knew he would die the day he did, in fact, die.
I also swear to you, that there is a future in store for you that will not resemble anything in this life you are living. Some rest, some laughter, beer, music, friends, and everyday you can pat yourself on the back for being a stand up guy when you were put to the task.
"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." ---- William Casey, CIA Director, 1981
Sweetie is completely aware
ALS causes neuro- muscular failure, but has little effect on mental function. She understands everything going on around her. Lately, she has been weeping and expressing despair. She knows the end is approaching.

Could you give her an antidepressant and/or a pain pill and take the edge off?
Hang in there, you'll be glad you did. I agree that you should be proud of yourself in the future for being a stand-up guy. Then and now, give yourself an occasional reward for your hard work.

Morning Tim...
I remember you told me once that this is one of Sweetie's favorites. This is for her:
This is for you my brother:
Hola Hombre
It has been awhile. I was going to put together an IBMA report, but ... Everything I read says this year was the best one yet. I hope all is well. I am guessing, but I think Sweetie's horizon does not go until 2017. During her latest rough stretch, the hospice folks were swarming around my house. It is not tough to read the tea leaves.

you and Sweetie strength and love and sending positive emotions and good thoughts your way.
Thanks
Better than railing about HRC. Sweetie's affliction has brought about a philosophical change. Post Sweetie I intend to live an ethical and moral, my standards, life doing things my way. No more bending to the capitalist indoctrination or the up tight moralists.
The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself. - Friedrich Nietzsche -
Good resoluton, but I bet you were never as bad as you are
making it seem, or sweetie would not have loved you so long and you would not be as tender about her now as you are. Please stop beating yourself up about anything, be it the past or C99. You feel bad that Sweetie is so ill. You may be turning those bad feelings back on yourself. Pleased don't do that. Your situation is enough to deal with.
Please try to be as good to yourself, physically and emotionally, as you are to Sweetie. You both need it. Caregiving for a loved one is hell, not only because it's so much work, but also because so much emotion is involved. Be gentle to yourself, Tim, or you will not be able to give to anyone else. Remember the airplane oxygen mask analogy: when the masks come down, put yours on first, or you jeopardize both yourself and everyone who needs your help. Try meditating on it, or thinking about it for a couple of minutes.
((((Tim)))) We are all pulling for you. You pull for you, too.
You are all in my thoughts; hoping that
Sweetie's final days will be as good and comfortable as possible. Take care.

Recall our discussions about the pain management protocols?
I am happy to report that under Medicare hospice pain management is central to the mission. Sweetie can not swallow pills, so she has a sub-lingual morphine. The hospice is willing to supply it faster than she uses it. The morphine is great for using the bi-pap because is suppresses pulmonary distress feelings.

Thank you for
taking the time and wonderful energy to do the Funky Friday OT. It's good to carve out a space and time to maintain your squatters rights and share your thoughts and music with us. God bless you and Sweetie as I fell somehow she too is present here on Friday. I look forward to your OT's and hope we here at cc99% help lighten your heart a little. You have made me appreciate some funk which I never before listened to much. I loved opening this up first thing and visually waking up to Matisse. His work does have a calming, soothing effect and yet it is full of vibrant joy and life.

I don't know if I ever told the story here. I know I shared it with the EBer's.
I participate in a yearly New Orleans Jazzfest pilgrimage. It started with a bunch of drinking buddies and was originally a guy's trip. After my children left for college, I Sweetie started coming along. A bunch of the guys are about 10 years younger than me, and hard core Bruce Springsteen fans. Bruce was playing the Fest and was opposite Al Green. The krewe was yacking, going on about Bruce and cajoling me to see Bruce. I had to explain, "Are you fucking kidding me? I am here with a lady and Al Green is playing!". A good time was had by all.
