Open Thread - Friday, October 7, 2016

What I dream of is an art of balance, of purity and serenity devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter - a soothing, calming influence on the mind, rather like a good armchair which provides relaxation from physical fatigue. ~Henri Matisse~

I do not think I have ever been this tired. Not after a wrestling tournament, motorcycle race or extended party. I have had to summon strength to prepare the last few Friday Open Threads. I just tell myself ->

I arrived early, while C99 was still festival seating, and managed to finagle the Friday Open Thread. I am mainly a bluesman, and wanker, but I love the funk and enjoy putting quarters in the juke box. I intend to exercise my squatter's rights and hold onto the Friday Open Thread. Besides, I know a few lurkers who come here only to get their Sweetie update. So today, let's do some funky wanking.

I have been feeling self conscious about not keeping up with C99ers or engaging in dialogue. I intend to revert to my snarky self, someday. Until then ->

Sweetie is hanging in there. She has trouble breathing, can not take oral nutrition, her digestive system is waning, we are working on clearing up bed sores and communications is halting. I hold her, whenever I can. Holding her can be a little disconcerting. She has lost all muscle tone and I can feel her bones. I worry about hurting her when I dress her or perform a transfer.

Sweetie and I used to love to go out for live music. I was the instigator, but Sweetie was always game. We spent our formative years in Pittsburgh where there was a thriving bar band scene and a jazz tradition. Jimmy Ponder held down a regular gig at the Jame's Street Tavern. A worthwhile evening on the North Side.

Every summer home boy George Benson would stop by for a series of shows. In Pittsburgh, this was a big deal. George Benson always sold out. The races mixed and most people dressed up. George never disappointed the crowd.

I don't have a lot to say, mostly because I am sober, and tired. One of these days we will have to take a 420 break and have a few beers while the music plays. In the meantime enjoy the wankers.

Have a smooth weekend!

The tactics are the same as in the tech wars. Think of Bernie’s popular movement as Linux here, and the Hillary lobby’s wall of power, money, and influence as Microsoft.

The last lighthouse: free software in dark times
Ed @5m56s: "I did not use Windows machines when I was in my operational phase, because I couldn't trust them. Not because I knew there was a particular back door, but because I couldn't be sure."

Windows is insecure. Full stop. Start over. Free Software, Free Society.

We campaign for these freedoms because everyone deserves them. With these freedoms, the users (both individually and collectively) control the program and what it does for them. When users don't control the program, we call it a “nonfree” or “proprietary” program. The nonfree program controls the users, and the developer controls the program; this makes the program an instrument of unjust power.

A program is free software if the program's users have the four essential freedoms:

  • The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose (freedom 0).
  • The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
  • The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).
  • The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others (freedom 3). By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

A program is free software if it gives users adequately all of these freedoms. Otherwise, it is nonfree. While we can distinguish various nonfree distribution schemes in terms of how far they fall short of being free, we consider them all equally unethical.

Free is a concept USians have a terrible time understanding, ironically. Thanks GOOG, Tube, etc.. /not

“Free software” means software that respects users' freedom and community. Roughly, it means that the users have the freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. Thus, “free software” is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept, you should think of “free” as in “free speech,” not as in “free beer”. We sometimes call it “libre software,” borrowing the French or Spanish word for “free” as in freedom, to show we do not mean the software is gratis.

It should be renamed Win-Stasi 10. It's like a software version of the teevee show "Monster Inside Me" about people inflicted with parasites.

I shutoff all the private data sharing settings (which are on by default). And there are still sekret telemetry services that run to mine data and phone home to Microsoft. I'm still working on resolutions to problems with their Win10 Anniversary Update. Gawd awful.

I'd switch to Linux in a heartbeat but I'm maintaining some windows apps that only run on Windoze.

But I was running Win7, my machine came with that installed. I allowed the Win10 upgrade. Weird stuff began to happen, little bells and the cursor blinks out. They did their magic update at the moment that I wanted to search for symptoms of what was happening to me. Unfortunate timing indeed. An hour delay to find out that yes, I was having a gall bladder attack. Would Win10 even permit a second OS (libre software) on the box?

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

Microsoft makes life as difficult as possible for non-Windows users. UEFI and other such "initiatives" by Redmond ensure that only Windows will run on most new machines. They will defend their monopoly any way they can.

There are ways to get around anything Microsoft does. The unfortunate aspect to this is that one does need to be somewhat adept in customizing operating systems and PC hardware settings.

I am not a programmer by any means. I did, however, convert a gaming PC into a Linux desktop without too much effort. I do, however, have many years of Linux experience dating back to before Redmond considered Linux a viable threat. I thus got to learn the tricks in sequence instead of all at once like many are now experiencing.

All I'm saying here is that it can be done. It helps if one has a Linux veteran to help, but even that isn't necessary.

software. As a Luddite who can run a computer it is a pain in the butt. When my xp melted down I got a new computer an Acer running on windows 7. The geeks down the street who had pronounced the xp dead took my old hard drive out and reinstalled it on the new machine. They installed LibreOffice to replace Microsoft Office which was not salvageable. I do not like it at all. It flings everything all over the place file wise.

I'm not a good enough techie to adapt it to "change it so it does your computing as you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this". Source code is beyond my capability. It looks interesting but man o man it's Greek to me. So I'm breaking down and buying Microsoft Office with Excel. I hate Microsoft as each progressive new version is more automated and idiotic then the last.

My first computer was a Windows 98. I loved it I could move stuff around where I wanted it manually. It was simple. Any software that requires a person to buy tutorials or as with my Adobe software take a class to use it is ridiculous. I lost Adobe Creative Suite when my computer melted but that was actually a blessing in disguise as I went back to using a student version of Corel. Free is a concept I understand but if you cannot deal with programming and are not a geek it does not offer any freedom you can't use it.

Both Adobe and Microsoft suck. Mozilla seems more user friendly and it has over the years been easy to adapted as my browser. I'm sorry to hear Microsoft is sabotaging/infiltrating as if I had any tech skills I would use Linux. The freedom to use and share is much better then having to deal with software controlled by the likes Bill Gates Window's version of automated intelligence.

Like you, beyond my ken. So I must rely on people I pay to do such. I should come up with a customizing list to hand them. I sat thru hours of Pagemaker and Photoshop classes. I could never afford them for home use. Every new download of an art program is days on the learning curve. I grow older and more weary. Android on the tablet sucks, usually it's dead because I don't plug it in. iPhone I use, except forget to recharge every other day, Camera works fine.

Hey you don't have to be a techie, you just have to know one. Like a car, software takes maintenance. I pay mechanics to maintain and fix a car, I pay hackers to maintain and fix my softwares, and I also get tons of non-paid support, information given freely by other users solving problems together. Always found the community support better than most commercial support. I know other people who don't want to make the effort to become involved, be part of something more, so I get it. It is not for everyone... yet. Wink People are still working to make your freedom plug-n-play, one day it will be an easy choice for everyone.

We (user groups) used to have gatherings called Installfests on weekends where people could bring their PCs and we'd help install Linux for them (if possible) and eat pizza together. Now, our local communities are all corporately torn asunder like everything else. No one meets in meat space. The BIGs have wrecked it, they take so much and give so little back, it is disgusting. Locked-down devices rule, lobbyists are killing everything good, it's all political. The Free Software movement needs all kinds of people to step up, not just developers. Writers, artists, musicians, lawyers, everybody, all in it together. Free Software, Free Society. Smile

I really don't want to live where software controls everything, and I have no access to the source code. It is already happening though, the tide seems against transparency everywhere. Even our elections! I understand Luddites and the people who just don't care to participate too, who has time? Or energy? Technology is simply not interesting, I think most people just want to use it and not think about how it uses them. That's "the plan" I guess.

Good luck to all.

All you really need is the OT header and a sentence or two on how you and sweetie are doing. I swear one day I'm only going to put the header in one of mine just to set the precedent. I quit doing them because I was afraid I could find anything or enough intelligent things to say. Finally, I said "fuck it" and volunteered again. " It is what it is" is my new theme. Biggrin

The evening feeding, medication, toile ting, hygiene, changing and getting Sweetie into bed routine is usually ~9-10:30. By the time I have her in bed I am thoroughly awake and wired. It is usually midnight before I can get to bed. Lately, I have only been able to sleep 5-6 hous. I creep around the house waiting for Sweetie to wake organically.

And according to wikipedia "The American Prospect is a quarterly American political magazine dedicated to American liberalism."

But a hard core of young, white Bernie-or-Busters may yet believe that voting for Stein, or even Johnson, is an expression of their disdain for the system.

It may be, at that. But it’s more clearly an expression of something quite different: their white skin privilege.

Someone said the other day, it's time to walk away from the "Liberal" label, because the Consera-Dems have co-opted it. I think I agree.

1973, my senior year in HS. A couple years later I remember my brother, a friend and I scored a pound of Panama Red and took it to our apartment. We sat at the kitchen table and smoked a couple joints and I swear to this day it's the best weed I ever smoked. The talking heads say the strains now are far more potent than back in the day, I say not. The Red, Acapulco Gold, Thaistick, there was some good stuff back then.

Mafia town. We had a great supply chain. QPs of Red or Gold Columbian for $90. Remember blonde Lebanese? I had some Maui that was impossible to roll. It would stick to you fingers. Most of the stuff today has significant percentages of Indica. Those old Mexican, Columbian and Jamaican strains were soaring Sativas. The Sativas are really tough to grow inside. They have very high light demands, so most indoor growers are growing some sort of hybrid or Indica. Heh, it is harvest season! I graduated in '76. Back in those days there was a phenomena where good cannabis came out of cure just in time for the holidays.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State John Kerry called Friday for Russia and Syria to face a war crimes investigation for their attacks on Syrian civilians, further illustrating the downward spiral in relations between Washington and Moscow.
Kerry said Syrian forces hit a hospital overnight, killing 20 people and wounding 100, describing what would be the latest strike by Moscow or its ally in Damascus on a civilian target.
"Russia and the regime owe the world more than an explanation about why they keep hitting hospitals, and medical facilities, and women and children," Kerry told reporters alongside French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, who arrived in Washington directly from meeting Russian officials in Moscow.
Kerry said such acts "beg for an appropriate investigation of war crimes."

They have been bombing hospitals in Yemen and other citizens infrastructure since they began bombing them.

Bruce was playing the Fest and was opposite Al Green. The krewe was yacking, going on about Bruce and cajoling me to see Bruce. I had to explain, "Are you fucking kidding me? I am here with a lady and Al Green is playing!". A good time was had by all.

The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself. - Friedrich Nietzsche -

Thank you for your open threads. I enjoy reading about the subjects you present, as well as the music.

It sounds like you and Sweetie are keeping very close. How bitter-sweet it must be. Thank you for sharing the bitter and sweet with us.
