Great Night For Bernie Sanders Campaign in San Antonio!!
FEELIN' THE BERN IN SAN ANTONIO!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well folks, tonight was one of the most exciting nights I've ever had in politics in Texas.
It was a meeting with the state campaign staff of Bernie for President. They laid out the agenda. Then we divided up into working groups.
I met with a few people under the Labor for Bernie banner. And here's where it gets exciting! I met the former long-time editor of Labor Notes. Yes he's moved down here to San Antonio from Detroit and he's now working with Unite Here.
A super great guy. And this is BREAKING NEWS. The Hyatt workers FINALLY have union recognition. It hasn't even been publicly announced yet, so you are hearing this ahead of the public announcement. This has been a SIX YEAR fight. So exciting.
I met a local leader of National Nurses United. She invited me to a Bernie gathering at her house on Saturday afternoon. Great lady. They don't have any hospitals organized yet in San Antonio, but they are here on the ground and active.
The place was packed to capacity. We had to give our name at the door to prevent exceeding the room limit. They'll have to rent a bigger place next time.
A lot of the Bernie events planned are going to be fun. For example a bike ride down town on Dec 6. Ride for awhile, stop and chat with folks. Ride some more. Stop at a cafe. Think it will be along the river walk. San Antonio rents bikes for not too much money. Sounds like a lot of fun!! A lovely young woman invited me.
And that's another great thing about the meeting. Lots of young people. And as for Bernie not attracting people of color...well there will be a huge group picture posted somewhere soon. Because we took a great group photo chanting "Bernie Bernie" the whole time.
The room was a least half Hispanic, I think, and a lot of African Americans also. And plenty of young people, most exciting to see the younger generation getting involved.
The meeting was led by Jacob Limón, Sanders' Texas state director, and Ananda Tomas, San Antonio director.
Excellent post--glad you had a successful meeting, JR! Sounds
very encouraging, indeed.
BTW, I spent a number of weeks in San Antonio in the mid-1990s, and absolutely fell in love with the River Walk. In spite of it being an ultra-conservative city, I have to say that I liked San Antonio, a lot. Also, the people there are super friendly. I was actually amazed that so many people spoke when making eye contact, as I passed them on the sidewalk--just like in a small town!
Anyhoo, I would love to see pics of the Bike Ride--especially on the River Walk. (if possible)
And, hey--give Max and Rusty a big smooch and head rub for me!
Everyone thinks they have the best dog, and none of them are wrong.
Will do on the photos, UL
and delivering the doggie smooches directly!
I went to your links
and WOW! In the group photo at Jacob Limon's site, I saw a real mix of faces. What I saw were all ages and lots of people of color. Where are all the white old men that the naysayers tell us are the only people supporting Bernie? LOL
I can hardly wait to read more about the Sanders campaign in Texas. BTW, I visited San Antonio once and love it! Great downtown along the riverwalk and I was shocked that it dates way back to the 1930's.
Do I hear the sound of guillotines being constructed?
Yep and Bernie is attracting younger people
who have never participated in politics before and are now all excited and feelin' the Bern!
Sounds fun and it is good news.
Ran into this on facebook. There is a growing backlash at the Democratic Party. It is about damn time. All of these people refusing to hold them accountable all of these years have destroyed the party and the middle class. Does it hurt when a Republican wins? OMG YES - I'm in Michigan. If we had done this earlier rather than later, the price wouldn't be so high.
We are agitating to bring Bernie to San Antonio
I really think he would like the people here.
The politics suck but the people around here are great. And I love the mix of cultures.
