The Political Stockholm Syndrome

This from Cenk Uygur

You supported Bernie in the primaries. Are you supporting Hillary now? Will you vote for her?

There's a difference between voting for her and supporting her. I will most certainly vote for Hillary Clinton. No, I do not remotely support her. I will be looking to fight her on day one.

That's a mighty fine piece of twaddle or faux-logic if you prefer.

To my mind it's a bit like "I will surrender to keep up the fight".

If I was cruel, I would just say it was utter bullshit and self deception in abject defeat whilst still trying to keep your viewers.

If I am kinder I would say it is the sheer weight of having to hold your nose when voting has deceived you that it doesn't really matter, because you can somehow still fight back.

How has that worked?

Obama's only "success" was to pass a piece of slightly modified Republican legislation bizarrely called the "Affordable Care Act" whilst ditching virtually every progressive idea before it was even presented. Well, at least we avoided "worse" in the primaries last time around, this worse is now being presented as the "lesser of the two evils".

We will fight her from a pre-lost position, its like an army deliberately marching into a box canyon with enemy artillery all around the cliff tops. Hmm, "charge of the light brigade" " into the valley of death" ring any bells? Anyone?

Cenk has repeated the common "mantra" of self-delusion, it seems to have magical properties as every 4 years it comes right back into the fore. To avoid repeating it ad infinitum one has to stop using it completely.

During the primary she said to us "children, you cant have good things because you are silly"

During the Presidential debate she tried to make Trump appear just as much of a warmonger as she is.

Her "supporters" are just non stop attacking a buffoon rather than making a case of why she would be a good president, because in their heart of hearts they know she wont. If they have to attack the left in so doing, well there is always fun in that.

Every non vote for Hillary is two votes for Trump!

The only way to stop this fiasco is to say, enough is enough.

You may think the candidates are bad enough this time around, what about the next? No doubt the "not as bad" mantra will once again be dusted off and given new magical sprinkles.

Never forget!

Surrendering now means we can still fight on!

Oh wait.......

There are people who agree with us on how awful HRC that see how a Trump presidency will spike racist/hate crimes as they've done post-Brexit in the UK. Voting against that guaranteed outcome is certainly a moral act.

But they're completely wrong.

It's Clinton's presidency that will spike racist/hate crimes. So much so that it frightens me.

These sorts of murders and abuse will increase under Trump; they will increase much more under Clinton. Much more.

What's the one thing that drives a violent racist? What is most likely to make them turn to violence?

They think they are hard done by. They are angry because they think they have been cheated out of something that is their birthright.

So, in a brilliant move, Black leadership has made Hillary Clinton their standard-bearer, and the new, unlikely face of the fight against racism. An incredibly unpopular figure, believed widely to be an untrustworthy, corrupt liar, who is now also widely believed to have committed election fraud, cheating her way into the nomination.

What happens when Trump's supporters believe--as they almost certainly will--that she cheated her way into the Presidency? Denying their candidate the win they think he deserves (and for all I know, might deserve--so far, there's no evidence Trump has cheated.) What happens when their fantasies of being cheated out of something they deserve actually come true? Or even appear to? And who's going to be the counterbalance for them when they react in violence? At least, when hate crimes spiked under Obama, Obama began as a generally popular and trusted figure. People despise Hillary. And the media has been saying, over and over again, that Black and Latino people, but especially Black people, are responsible for her making it this far. How is that going to play to the racists, when it's no longer "Crazy Bernie" who is being cheated out of his rights, but their own leader?

And then Black people, or at least their leadership, will turn to Hillary for help. And she'll make a few insincere speeches and tell them to kick rocks. Or alternatively, use the wave of violence as an excuse to ratchet up the police state some more, making a few extremely visible busts for the TV, and leaving the overall situation as it is. There's no way she's going to pull an Eisenhower or a Kennedy and actually attempt to make the racist murder stop. Where's the profit in that?

Brown and Black people *here* fear Trump more; brown and Black people overseas fear Hillary more.

Makes sense, up to a point. But there's no sense in talking like this has anything to do with racism vs anti-racism, because if this is a choice at all, it's a choice between killing POC overseas, or stateside.

Hey, Hillary's shown that she's cool with doing both! OnlyRichLivesMatter#

Not to mention that there's an alternate for first female President which we can all actually - literally - live with.

I'm done with the Democrats entirely now and forever. Except for f*cking Trump. One cannot dismiss that he is literally Mussolini. The presidency GWB/Obama left us with is perfect for a police state to take over. You will get Dominionists in the cabinet, Joint Chiefs, CIA, Supreme Court.....

Nor can one dismiss that Hillary is Trump, with better message control and better hairdo. Google "Hillary Clinton C Street" if you want a good look at the Dominionists' positioning for power under her regime.

how can I possibly spit on anyone who would vote HRC in the belief that Trump WILL increase the threat of death to their children?

This question possesses an honest, factual answer: Hillary WILL increase the threat of death to their children to the same degree or worse. The only difference is venue. With Trump, the violence is more likely to be domestic, occurring on our own soil; with Hillary, the violence will be in foreign lands with oil our Owners want sitting under their soils. The net effect, however, is identical: the same young Serf kids, principally brown and black, will end up equally dead either way.

There is some truth to the caustic burn of #WhitePrivilege in having the luxury of not voting for HRC.

False. Not voting for either Tweedledum OR TweedledumBER is no luxury; it is a nationwide moral imperative.

Especially since I'm living on a thousand dollars a month of Social Security Disability. Privileged, spoiled pasty-faced ingrates like myself are squarely in Trump's crosshairs. Still voting for Stein.

Just because someone comes from the college/creative class background normally associated with the Greens is no guarantee that they're actually well-off or even "privileged" in any meaningful sense of the word.

I don't blame people in swing states for choosing to go with HRC. By the same token, I won't lecture Stein people in those states for building a 3rd party alternative (which is what I see this current Green presidential campaign factually amounting to).

White Privilege definitely exists in this country and it does benefit everyone perceived as white by the system. Until you cross that system. One that can then be withdrawn - McCarthy blacklists, civil rights workers in the south, being too leftwing anytime in US history.

Your last paragraph is where I am.

As an Irishman traveling in and through the UK I have had the experience that African Americans have with law enforcement here. Obviously wasn't shot but being Irish in the UK, even after the Troubles is still an insight into being a minority in the US.

The "White Privilege" Meme is starting to get on my nerves

Why, I resemble that remark (exactly)!

Most applications of any "privilege" meme are race-baiting aimed at white people, pure and simple. Many examples are to be had at TOP, especially from the keyboards of the local proprietor, Denise Oliver Velez, and Brooklyn Bad Boy. Although people of color, their use of our "favorite" meme is doing the KKK's evil deeds for them, making friends and allies into enemies.

It is a meme that clean needs to die, yesterday, with respect to any ordinary 99%ers. (YMMV if one happens to carry a badge and a gun, for obvious reasons.)

Sure, there are many forms of privilege. The only one that really matters though is money. Money, or lack thereof, overrides all other forms of privilege. People are so focused on the easy-to-target identity politics forms of race and sex, yet nearly complete ignore the most important one. It's maddening.

That's one of the major reasons I supported Bernie. Focusing on lifting people out of poverty would solve most of the problems faced by women and minorities. Instead, Hillary will keep most of those unprivileged people begging at the feet of her rich old white friends. And that's the reality of why the establishment had to stop Bernie, because his focus actually would have fixed societal woes, and they can't have that.

the "privileged" slur is that the people slinging it are engaging in pure projection.

I get $1000/month SSD - and Medicare - because I'm on dialysis; if my husband was ever unable to work, we would go under and quickly. But all my friends who make that accusation (whether gently or cruelly) are all financially comfortable. They have paid-off homes on acreage. They have union pensions. They can afford boats. Horses. Scuba and underwater photography gear. Multiple vacations every year. Neither my husband nor I have had a single vacation. Ever. We didn't even get a honeymoon; I was still working then and took off a Monday for a long weekend (and my boss objected to that).

In other words, their comfy financial existence is threatened by a Trump presidency. My actual survival - financial and otherwise - is threatened either way.

Yet I'm the "privileged" one. Well, I'm going to take that privilege and use it to vote for Jill Stein.

"When we remember we are all mad, the mysteries disappear and life stands explained." - Mark Twain

Couldn't agree more! (As usual, lol.)

What much of this 'open season on Black and other darker-coloured citizens' boils down to are (in the US, often heavily media-conditioned) bullies going after those perceived as being most vulnerable - because too poor to purchase justice.

US citizens of darker skin have long been discriminated against and often effectively locked off into more dangerous/polluted jobs/areas with poorer educational facilities and are therefore more often in the poorest/most vulnerable groups - and are therefore readily identified by police bullies as likely poor and vulnerable by skin colour, as attire can mislead and is not always a reliable guide as to who it's safe for police to harass, assault, falsely arrest or murder while maligning their victims to 'justify' their crimes - not that skin colour is always a reliable guide to 'safe' 'mistaken identity/Breathing While Black' out-of-the-blue police abuses of the citizenry either. But skin colour's been instilled as a cultural signal especially in certain police departments as to how any citizen is treated.

There's a reason that Jewish people and others were marked with mandatory symbols in Nazi Germany - to make them instantly recognizable as subject to abuse without likely negative consequences.

People are not 'privileged' by not being (currently - wait for corporate law to kick in under the TPP et al) routinely beaten up, falsely arrested or shot by the police they pay to protect them in what's supposed to be a democracy, or by not being actively discriminated against in what's supposed to be a democratic society.

These behaviours and the concept of only the privileged not being subject to public servant's abuses mark a fascist culture, one where pathological corporate interests effectively control governmental policies and attitudes and control the people via a police/security state, rather than a democracy where legitimate government is to be of, for and by the people, with equal rights, treatment and opportunity for all, as is the basis of law and legitimate government enshrined within the US Constitution, traitorously ignored by those in contravention of it.

Time to start swatting the traitors upside the head with that rolled up Constitution to dust it off, prior to unrolling it to start demanding those Constitutional rights and restrictions on government overreach be fully applied for the first time.

And before the pretense that a transitory public servant can simply dispose of all that by signing a private agreement with hostile forces is enacted into illegal and unconstitutional 'law' enforced by ruthless outside powers through what's no longer even pretending to be your own government, merely corporate employees.

The powers granted to the offices of public administration are delegated by the people to whom the country belongs and are not owned by the transitory holder of any office to be surrendered to anyone but the people or, where applicable, representatives (actually) acting in the public interest to be again assigned/delegated to be used in the public interest.

The American government exists for the public good of the American people, not to drain them for corporate profits - or to 'grant rights'???!!! to 3rd parties to sue them into bankruptcy for not supplying their anticipated maximized future profits at the cost of their freedom, basic citizen/human rights,, democracy/domestic law, human, animal and environmental health and lives.

Bernie knows and has fought life-long toward the goal of actual democracy in a responsible society - and Jill is the only Presidential candidate now running who's not actually planning on acting against it.

used by overprivileged white people to erase their privielges, most of which they enjoy at the expense of others. White privilege allows them to elevate poor white people to share the guilt that rests with the privileged. That is why you will find that very few struggling white people embrace the notion, while the comfortable class (especially their overweened young) use it as a bludgeon. it's a way to deflect attention from their struggle-free existences in mostly all white communities and schools and social groups, trading off of connections to get jobs and using money to get into the best schools (through the college admissions cottage industry that exists for them).

One can acknowledge that minorities may suffer injustices because of their skin color without having to embrace the leveling of socio-economic privilege under the banner of "white privilege." The perfect example of the problem with white privilege its prominent purveyor, Tim Wise. When challenged why a white man is educating people about white privilege and the minority experience, he replied, without the slightest bit of self-awareness: well, they will listen to me because I'm white. Yes, white privilege for he, but not for thee.

... In talking with my Indian, Middle-Eastern Muslim family & friends about this over the past year the fear which is building to outright terror at the prospect of President Trump is genuine and I cannot fault anyone voting for HRC against Trump.

I look at the African American boys that are friends with my wee creature and how can I possibly spit on anyone who would vote HRC in the belief that Trump WILL increase the threat of death to their children? Look at the aftermath of Brexit and how racist attacks spiked. The same will happen if Trump wins.

So yes. HRC is appalling. She is unacceptable as president. She will be terrible for the world. And in the long run just as awful as Trump. But you have parents concerned about their children making it home at night. Wives of their husbands, husbands of wives. Children of their parents. ...

But we do know that Hillary felt that a mayor who withheld video evidence of police murder of PoC so that the murders could continue was fit to retain his position showing that she's OK with even direct and routine police murder of darker-skinned citizens.

If everyone would support the only candidate still actively running (personally saving hope for/fantasy of some Bernie miracle myself) who isn't good with killing off life on the planet, Jill would win the most votes and we'd all have a chance at democracy, civilization and survival.

By running a 'greater evil' Trump in the other corporate party, they hope to stampede people to the atrocity, keeping everyone trapped in the two-corporate-party trade-off box for one last election while the corporate coup completes, with domestic law offshored for corporate profiteering - and citizens actively voting to have all rights and protections removed to become disposable corporate serfs in an unlimitedly industrially polluted and rapidly dying world seems rather counterproductive.

Mentioning Jill and suggesting that they look up her site might perhaps be an idea, as well as letting them know that Hillary has no problem with officials supporting police murder of citizens, could help save their lives, as well as everyone else's, once they know there is a Presidential option on the ballot which they can actually survive.

One not also all set for 'limited' nuclear attacks on multiple other people's countries - with Mutual Assured Destruction flattening North America as well in self-defense - evidently in case her other policies of unlimited industrial abuses by offshored corporate-profiteering 'law' wouldn't kill off life on the planet quickly enough.

"You will get Dominionists in the cabinet, Joint Chiefs, CIA, Supreme Court....."
Maybe you're unaware of the fact that Hillary Clinton was a member of the C Street, "The Family," up until she ran for president in 2008. Check out this article from Mother Jones, back before it became an arm of the NeoLiberal propaganda:
http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2007/09/hillarys-prayer-hillary-clin...
The article was co-written by Jeff Sharlet, who wrote, "The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power."
What part of the mutually-feeding union between the Oligarchs and the Dominionists do you not understand? She only quit C Street because she was about to run for president... not to mention the fact that Rachel Maddow unearthed Sharlet's revelations about C Street, and got it removed from religious tax exempt status.
Sure, it's possible that Trump would turn over his administration to the Dominionists, since he selected Pence as VP, but his history doesn't suggest that his ego would do anything such thing. We all know that he picked Pence as a way of getting the evangelical vote. But we also know that he isn't driven by religion.
Hillary has a very long and embedded history w/ the monied AND religionist cabal.

So-called "journalists" keep denigrating her for not having won a state or federal office, but she keeps trying; she keeps her focus; she doesn't give up. And while that is a scary trait in a right-winger, it's one we see all too infrequently w/ a leftist.

The other argument that always went along with being the chess master was the contradictory and simultaneous argument that "he's only President! I'm tired of this back-slapping "Isn't humanity neat?" bullshit. We're a virus with shoes, okay? That's all we are. - Bill Hicks

Politics is the entertainment branch of industry. - Frank Zappa

How much lower can we stoop until we come up with a wrestling champion/porn star/monster truck racer like Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho from Idiocracy?

After Trump, that isn't far off.

Vowing To Oppose Everything Trump Attempts.

I thought that WAS Trump? Even if only to scare voters to Clinton?

Psychopathy is not a political position, whether labeled 'conservatism', 'centrism' or 'left'.

A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.

Really tough, to continue to view someone *in the media* as an ally when they spread her talking points.

ignore Hillary's bad points, which we can deal with later by opposing her once she's in office, and just stop Trump.

Bad Trump. Trump bad. Vote Hill! Urgh, urgh.

You may think the candidates are bad enough this time around, what about the next?

Next time our self-destruction may already have become inevitable. At that point, in the scheme of things, it doesn't really matter if Kenny G becomes President.

Beware the bullshit factories.

Only too true, I'm afraid.

People voting for a corporate party corporate pick candidate, this including the other pathological liar, the billionaire 'deal-maker' - or for the TPP-supporting Libertarian - are voting for the corporate coup making the rest of us into corporate serfs in a world existing only for the maximized anticipated future profits of thousands of corporations/billionaires until life/oxygen production expires within decades from unlimited corporate/military pollution/destruction and other abuses protected in off-shored corporate 'law' where nothing but those maximized profits has standing and the people and environment have no protection again any/all corporate abuses.

Government is supposed to be the united power of the people against such depredation, not an arm of the corporate/billionaire con artists... but if a faked election is bothered with again, it'll be of direct corporate management, if this Bush-initiated, Hillary-promoted corporate coup Obama's shoving through goes down.

The next President this time needs to be Bernie or Jill - they're the only ones who will even try to fight for democracy and survival.

Every one of our greatest presidents have decried the power of corporations, starting w/ George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson--and then Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Rooselvelt, FDR, Eisenhower..

I bet if Kenny G were able to be on the ballot in all states *right now* about 40% of the electorate would vote for him over Hillary and Trump.

I live in NY, so I don't 'have to' vote for her, and I won't.

Bernie won my county; I did my part.
