Hillary Clinton IT Guru Posted Server’s Security Keys to Public, Opening Door for Hackers to Access Emails

A computer specialist who maintained Hillary Clinton’s private email server divulged sensitive security information on a public web forum, opening the door for hackers to easily access the former secretary of state’s emails.

Paul Combetta of Denver-based Platte River Networks posted Clinton’s proprietary IP address on a reddit.com web forum, soliciting help from clandestine IT specialists to help fix security patches on Clinton’s email server. According to one such post, obtained by True Pundit, Combetta divulged publicly that the secure socket layer encryption that protects the data from intrusion was not functioning. In an effort to have other IT specialists ping the server to try and troubleshoot the security holes, Combetta publicly provided Clinton’s coveted IP address.

In one particularly damaging forum post, Combetta in 2014 writing under the screen name “stonetear,” shared Clinton’s private server information with reddit user “Afroman” thanking him for his help and acknowledged the server was wide open to hackers. In the process, Combetta gave up Clinton’s IP address by publishing pings to the box for every would-be hacker to see and use.

Yesterday, Combetta deleted the above web conversations from reddit.com after True Pundit broke a news story detailing how Hillary Clinton and her aides directed Platte River Networks to systematically alter, fabricate and forge emails to protect her communications from being “exposed to anyone.” The request was so unusual, complex, and likely illegal that Combetta had to turn to other IT gurus on reddit.com for a solution to try to satisfy Clinton’s demand.

Apparently Bill got his off whether the other parties wanted to or not. So the people got screwed by him in multiple ways, and I very much doubt that it ever felt good for anybody else.

So WTF? So this newest development is like the opposite of all those. Every sysop from old and every network admin from now wants to see this guy strung up. He should be banned from working in IT forevermore.

Everyday to see the latest installment of the Clinton fail. Have to wonder if they will make it to the election. I wonder when the people who vote in this country will have had enough? And, I wonder what it will be that finally take them down. And, final wonder, who will it be that breaks that story?

I remember listening to the watergate hearings in 1973 on the radio, everyday, the drip drip drip, finally breaking the story out. History repeating....

EXCLUSIVE: Clinton Foundation AIDS Program Distributed ‘Watered-Down’ Drugs To Third World Countries

Former President Bill Clinton and his Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) distributed “watered-down” HIV/AIDs drugs to patients in sub-Saharan Africa, and “likely increased” the risks of morbidity and mortality, according to a draft congressional report obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation.

The congressional report, titled,“The Clinton Foundation and The India Success Story,” was initiated by Rep. Marsha Blackburn, a Tennessee Republican and vice-chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

It took a lot of people's breath away. The nut of all this is when the Clinton's will be found guilty of breaking the law. Re the aids drugs, this could generate a massive RICO lawsuit with a bigger force field than the Clinton forcefield. They will be taken down and , like Nixon, it will be beautiful in all of its ugliness (finally) revealed. Watergate was from a galaxy far, far away. I have to think that TPTB within the dem party, and outside the Clinton swamp,(500 people?) are asking themselves, " Is the Big Takedown better before or after the election"? And, whether they have any control over that question anyway. Looks like the fate of the Nation may be in Republican hands ! The horror!

Further down in the comments I found the link to motherboard which documents this. Motherboard appears to be a science & tech site not a partisan blog. Predictably, the writing at motherboard is more nuanced but it still looks pretty bad. Two questions remain in my mind:

  • Is Combetta actually the reddit poster Stonetear?
  • If he is, who told him to modify the emails?

Our intuition is one thing, and definitive proof another. My intuition tells me Stonetear and Combetta are the same and that it was indeed HRC and/or her staff who requested the destruction/deletion of the email data.

But -- I think you're right with your bullet points:

1) Is Combetta actually the reddit poster Stonetear?

If anyone has definitive proof that Combetta is this Stonetear, I have not seen it. Could it be someone else? As far as I know, it could. Were I Combetta, I would not volunteer a damn thing without a subpoena.

2) If he is, who told him to modify the emails?

Subpoena time again. There's less chance of finding this information via the Internet than there is of proving the existence of Bigfoot. I seriously doubt that Combetta (if he is Stonetear) will cough up this information without sitting in a witness chair with his lawyer at his side.

and I think the reason is pretty simple - Libertarians are pretty conventional conservatives (I argue that they're 1920s era Republicans) plus a reluctance to engage overseas and advocating marijuana reform, spiced with a little "Oh noes the Fed" and gold buggery. Much of their platform is conventional enough to slide past without notice. I suspect that if Trump came out in favor of marijuana reform he could pick up half the Libertarian vote and the election would be over.
The Greens have a broader scope, being the only actual Left in this country. It takes some listening and study for someone to get on board with them unless they are already a Lefty. Combine that with an ineffective party apparatus and media blackout and their message is pretty much lost.

We do have the closest thing to an Obi Wan possible in the circumstances; seems characteristic of him that he'd still be fighting a desperate underground battle against the DeathStar people in the hope of a miracle save of the concept of democracy, humanity and life on the planet, (quite possibly in concert with such as Wikileaks) explaining why the PR is so frantic to discredit him as a 'sell-out' or a 'coward' in order to stop related concerted action by his now-divided supporters from achieving this, some strategic plan being why he took the only out that allowed him to not concede to Hillary or release his delegates to her. I'm certainly hearing nothing of further mass protests about the stolen nomination - left to stand as a 'done deal' yet again, due to dirty judges - on C-9, where I'd kinda expect to.

Anyone who hasn't read up on this prior and/or is wondering what foreign allies and others will think of another President Clinton and how far they'd trust one (unless, of course, this was a pay-off of some kind using taxpayer's money, which it rather sounds like - or possibly extortion - and unless all foreign governments don't mind dealing with the sort of person pathologically sucking up huge donations supposedly for sick people needing help but instead being given what they were told were useful drugs and poisoned for Clinton cash) might want to read this in full at source. The sordid history of Australia's deals to 'facilitate' the Clinton Foundation's access to Asia

On 23 October 2003 The Clinton Foundation announced that it had negotiated price reductions for the supply of HIV/Aids drugs with the following companies:

Aspen Pharmacare Holdings Ltd., of Johannesburg, South Africa;
Cipla Ltd., of Mumbai, India;
Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd., of Delhi, India; and
Matrix Laboratories Ltd., of Hyderabad, India.

The agreement covered antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) for delivery to African countries and the Caribbean through the Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative. Business for those pharma companies went through the roof.
...

... Ranbaxy's history is worse. By 2004 Ranbaxy was on notice of a formal investigation by the World Health Organisation over the sale by Ranbaxy of adulterated and worthless drugs labelled as the genuine article. In May 2013 Ranbaxy paid a record fine of USD $5ooM to settle the US Department of Justice criminal complaints. As the final US DoJ details settling the long running and very public case against Ranbaxy were completed, Bill Clinton jetted off to India to give what he thought was a private paid speech praising Ranbaxy and its executives. This is from the Indian Times, April 2013. ...

... At least $100M of taxpayer funded Australian aid money has been used in the purchase of pharmaceuticals under a relationship established between the Clinton Foundation and the Australian Government in February 2006. That is in addition to amounts donated directly to the Clinton Foundation.

Prior to his jailing, the pharmaceutical purchases were explained by Matrix Laboratories Mr Prasad, speaking here to DNA India in 2009.

Bill Clinton "facilitated" the deals ...

...Until end 2005 the Clinton Foundation's CHAI #1 was geographically focussed in Africa and the Caribbean. It doesn't appear to have demonstrated much distinctive competence beyond Clinton's price reduction with the dodgy pharmaceutical manufacturers. It had no demonstrable presence in Asia and no distinctive competence in the region at all. Australia is not mentioned in the Clinton Foundation 2005 Annual Report.

With no presence in our region and distinctive IP that appeared to consist of a publicly published pharmaceutical price list, it's hard to see what value Australia thought it might receive from our initial $25M partnership agreement (formally a MOU) with the Clinton Foundation. ...

... 18 months later and DFAT's annual report for 2006/07 makes just 4 mentions of the Clinton Foundation and the MOU. Our biggest achievement with Clinton after 18 months? Facilitating his Foundation's presence in our region. ...

...So we paid for others to access Clinton Foundation expertise and finances. Today, Australians should be forgiven for asking 'What expertise?" And as for access to finances, well Bill Clinton certainly seems to have profited for access to ours, but it's difficult to see much of the reverse.

As the DFAT Annual Report correctly records, we paid to "facilitate" the Clinton Foundation establishing a presence in our region. We then paid $100M for the purchase of often worthless pharmaceuticals made in underregulated Indian factories and distributed through deals "facilitated" by Bill Clinton.

We were taken for mugs by a conman.

Here's a taste of just one example of what is a consistent theme.
AUST GOVT's $11M contract with Clinton Foundation, no goal, no purpose, no objectives but we paid anyway

Here is a link to a comprehensive Independent Completion Report (ICR) into an $11M agreement with the Clinton Foundation HIV/Aids Initiative Inc.

http://completecolorado.com/pagetwo/2016/09/09/paul-combetta-may-have-st...

Paul Combetta may have stayed tethered to Clintons through legal reimbursements

Scroll down the page and you will see a very interesting invoice dated 10/16/2015.

It appears someone in Congress has little patience with Platte River Networks. Could be we can see some fireworks this week, and Assange is still waiting in the wings. I hope Combetta's in a safe place.

https://www.scribd.com/document/324709851/Stonetear-House-Investigation-...

A computer specialist who was given immunity by the U.S. Department of Justice in regards to the now-famous Clinton email server continued to work on issues and interviews related to the server as late as September of 2015, roughly six months after the story originally broke. And according to an invoice obtained exclusively by Complete Colorado, all of the costs for travel, time spent on interviews, and legal assistance needed by that individual were possibly being paid for by the Clintons.

If the Clintons were paying for Mr. Combetta’s time and travel, and especially if they were paying for any legal assistance he received through his employer, Denver-based Platte River Networks, it raises the question of how independent Mr. Combetta’s cooperation with the FBI was. Alternately, it could show he remained tethered, and therefore loyal to some degree, to Hillary Clinton and her team.

If it is in fact the private keys for the servers SSL certificate,.. The level of incompetence is legendary, SSL/TLS is the easiest part of an email server to setup.

Email is a rather special case to an extent, its a badly thought out protocol, that can not guaranty ownership of the exchanged messages, Nobody was thinking about abuse when it was first invented, and so designed nothing into it to deal with abuse. It was designed to work across different network's and network protocols, and I am not referring to different internet protocols, I am referencing the ability to move messages from an ip network, to a ipx/spx(pre internet protocol used by novell) network, to something else entirely and back again.

Email, or SMTP, is a very easily abused protocol that has a mountainous pile of crap tacked on, to deal with abuse without actually solving the flawed nature of the protocol in the first place, SMTP is an absolute pain in the ass to setup and properly maintain. And SMTP is an on going arms race with those that would abuse it, and not just hackers, their is also spammers, and in both cases multiple vectors that an attack might be after the server for.

If you put up an email server, the first thing that you will notice is hundreds of automatic bots scanning it every day, after a few bots have found your machine, you will start seeing login attempts, at first it will be common stuff short dictionaries(user root/admin, pass god/sex/password, etc), if your domain or whois info for your domain contain any words that match or are similar to leaked user databases from other sites, then more targeted user/password combo's will be tried, and this is also automated.

The internet for this sort of thing is a freaking battlefield, We absolutely can not allow the incompetence argument, If a person isn't ready to handle SSL keys properly, a very very simple thing todo, then they sure as hell shouldn't be running an email service.

Hillary's use of gmail is actually probably the least offensive thing that happened from a security perspective, google knows how to secure their stuff properly, and webmail over SSL is not something that is likely to have been broken even when communicating on hostile networks so long as the device doing the communicating hasn't had its certificate authority certificates compromised. of course using pop3 or imap when the private key is public and you might as well just directly forward all of your email to every other government directly and save them the trouble. especially if a password is sent across that connection(and it will be to log in).

Where the hell did they find this admin, they have him set this thing up after having him read redhat linux for dummies?

They should have never offered him immunity, they should have thrown his ass the in the clink, and after 6months or so offered to reduce his sentence for singing.

Yes, Google knows what they're doing, but if your main concerns are about control, deniability, and hiding information, then you probably don't want Google answering subpoenas. Better to have some little outfit that's easier to strong-arm, pay off, and manipulate.

The Clintons, and Hillary in particular, are obsessed with having control. They surround themselves with people who tell them what they want to hear, rather than what they should hear. I had a supervisor like that and he expressly told me that he never wanted me to volunteer any information in staff meetings and to only speak when he requested me to do so. He made a lot of stupid mistakes because he refused to listen to his staff.

much less one holding top secret govt data. In yesterday's reddit revelation, he was asking on reddit for advice on how to set email retention dates on the email server. Anyone asking something that basic is clearly a rookie at email server management.

And so today we see he admitted on a public reddit thread that the SSL was not working and gave out the IP address. Hahaha.

Hellery loves saying there is no evidence the server was hacked. But knowing the above tells me it is almost a certainty that it was hacked.

From the start of this it has seemed to me, not a techie person(but married to one) that they had, in DC, plenty of people with security clearances and expertise and knowledge of the laws of handling sensitive/classified information. They went as far away from real experts as possible, to find people who would not hear alarm bells about deleting emails from a government office. Of course, their search also landed them with people without very good skills, but it is hard to find good help with a coverup, right? Just the Platte River hire on its face has always seemed to me like evidence of concealing what they are doing. They were moderately lucky that it wasn't run by Boris and Natasha(the hapless Russian spies from the Bullwinkle cartoon show - yeah, sorry, I am that old).

Words are funny things. The word "hacked" for instance conjures images of malevolent nerds sitting in the dark running arcane programs to find backdoors into systems. This guy left the front door unlocked, and put a billboard out on the street telling people to come on over. So it wasn't hacked, there was no need to hack. Everyone in the world had an invitation to log in and take a look around.

Did that company exist very long before the Clinton's hired them? Starting to wonder if she/her people just picked a nerd she maybe had something on for purposes of quietude which they thought nobody would ever look for as a Clinton server host...

Solidarity forever

Please! Let's be accurate: The IP address of a device on the public Internet is not a key or password or anything of the sort -- it's the device's network identifier -- it's how routers identify that device in order to send network packets to it.

If it's a static IP address (not an address that's temporarily assigned via DHCP), and has a domain name, then it is entirely public -- you can look up the translation of domain name to IP address with nslookup or dig or whois other local DNS tool, or you can use a whois service on the web (e.g. http://whois.domaintools.com/). Please go ahead and try this on some domain that you think is private. Try it on some domain you own.

If the device is on a local network (and that's most of 'em), and is going through a gateway to the public IP network, then it will have a temporary IP address assigned by the gateway. You can see your own machine's IP address by going to:
https://www.whatismyip.com/
Some exploits aren't even possible on a device that's not directly connected to the public Internet -- the gateway just doesn't pass everything along.

What can you do with an IP address posted online? Nothing other than if you'd looked up the IP address by other means, or just started constructing arbitrary IP addresses. (We've effectively run out of IPv4 addresses, so you'll find something is using just about every IPv4 address.) So, given an IP address, you can attempt any number of standard exploits. (This is why you run a firewall and don't choose just a word in the dictionary as your root password.) Again, the IP address does not give you any special access. All it does is point to a specific device (if it's a static IP) or to some gateway's table mapping shared public IP to local addresses (if it's a DHCP address).

Now, it is still wrong to *invite* attempts to penetrate security...especially if the sysadmin suspects there is a security lapse. This is where one hires a reputable security company to do an audit, not ask your buds out on some subreddit. Ur still an idjit for saying, hey, come try to hack my device, I dare you! But it is *not* the same as posting access info that allows people in without hacking.

he gave them a clear and crippled target and characterized it as some VERY VIP email archive assuming this episode came after that disclosure (and if you cared to look up his posts at that time). How much more of an invitation would you need?

The FBI will throw fits (privately). And I bet Comey is having second thoughts about now.

“The first duty of a man is to think for himself”

The *title* says "security keys". That is incorrect and misleading. The IP address *does not* give access, it only identifies. It would be appropriate for the OP to correct the title and the article text that refers to keys.
