Tuesday Evening Coat-of-Arms Puzzle
Submitted by tapu dali on Tue, 09/13/2016 - 7:00pm
Where are they from, and why are there three?
For extra points, discuss their colours and their symmetry groups. Note especially the relative placement of the sword and the key in the first (leftmost) one.
What is the animal on the third one? What is it carrying on its shoulder? What is its significance?
Do you know of any other coats-of-arms with similar features?
Comments
Well, the dimidiation on the first coat
is interesting, as that died out fairly early on as a way of combining arms.
Sword over key in the first quarter, but key over sword in the fourth.
Hmm!

Hey Bollox, did I get your last puzzle right?
You never did answer, and I'm disappointed.

That's odd, I didn't know I published.
Oops!!
I must have pressed the wrong button. Sorry.
Off to check.

Okay, Charles Edward, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha
also of Albany.
And Grand Duke Frederick Augustus II of Oldenburg.
As far as I can make out, their closest common ancestors are Charles Christian of Nassau-Weilburg and his wife Caroline of Orange.
As there are so few flags, my vexillology exploration is pretty much done. I am looking forward to Charles Edward's banner turning up soon.

Nope, try going farther north
as you already know something about me.
BTW, I don't know the answers to my questions and I was hoping you could help!
There are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns – the ones we don't know we don't know.

I think that was supposed to be a reply to *me*,
and about his flag puzzle of a week or so ago that got completely lost in the shuffle. (I was the ONLY person who responded, at all, and I waited over 24 hours before I did.)

Apologies, TOM.
Keeping threads separate can be challenging. I wish they had something here similar to TOP where you know who's replying to whom!
Any ideas on mine?

Nope, I don't recall seeing anything like that
Can try to research it, though.

Also note the bishop and crook on the 3rd coat. ;-)

Bollox: I found a link one generation closer
Charles & Caroline's daughter Amalie von Nassau-Weiberg and her husband Viktor II von Anhalt-Bernburg.
Charles Edward of Albany and soforth was descended from their daughter Emma, while Fred of Oldenburg was descended from another daughter, Ida. I think that makes them second cousins once removed (Fred was a generation older than Charles).

Time for the answer.
I'm glad this was really hard.
Answer:
Look up the names, guess at some of the words (not that difficult), and you're there.

I could come up with some things
that no one else would *ever* guess, but I don't see the fun in not giving people a fair chance.
