Who Are You? I really want to know!

[video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5kmCgVhADY]

Zeroth Order approximation

(Visceral) As with most things of human construct, duh isn't it obvious‽ Clearly, I am me and you are you. Obviously my freedom (as in ability) to swing my arms ends where your body begins.

First Order Correction Term of the Expansion

(Philosophy) The notion of self versus the other is really a human construct. Witness the millennia of philosophical debate. The never ending "political" discussions here and elsewhere can be thought of as just modern fora for the never-ending struggle to define self.

Second Order Correction Term of the Expansion

(Biology) You body is composed of Human Cells and Other (exemplī grātiā Bacteria) Cells. The count of non-human cells may be much greater than the count of human cells according to some.

Third Order Correction Term of the Expansion

(Chemistry) The exchange of molecules between cells blurs the distinction inherent in the cellular description of self.

Fourth Order Correction Term of the Expansion

(Physics) The exchange of material and information with your "surroundings" makes this quest for a definition of identity even less meaningful from a certain point of view.

. . .

Nth Order Correction Term of the Expansion

(Quantum Mechanics) How did we evolve to this point? What are the possibilities? From where come thoughts? How are decisions made? Understanding is buried in the stochastic processes from which all emerges.

My mother's oft stated remark to me whenever the discussion of rock and roll came up. Except she left out the "I still think" part.

I'd say maybe from '66 to '76 is the highwater, with plenty of great stuff on both tails of that. From 1980 onwards, the music scene was dominated by pretentious new wave (hated it), hip-hop (hate it), punk (not my thing), grunge (not my thing), and bombastic, nausea-inducing, overproduced, written-to-a-formula power pop (Compare Heart's first 4 albums with the odious jobbed-out-songwriting crap with which they topped the charts in the mid-80s). Sure, there are always some folks out there producing stuff that's original, interesting, virtuosic, and, y'know, has a good beat that you can dance to (I like Arctic Monkeys), but the dominant stuff just can't stand up to the kind of music produced by these artists from '66 through '76, whether you want soulful pop or hard rock or folk rock or reggae or whatever:

The Beatles (+ solo works)
The Stones
The Who
The Doors
CCR
Dylan
Simon & Garfunkel (and Simon solo)
CSNY (and Young solo)
The Guess Who (and later, BTO)
Santana
Jefferson Airplane
Springsteen (1st three albums)
Led Zeppelin
Cream
Clapton/Derek
Traffic (and anything else Steve Winwood was involved in)
Jethro Tull
Jeff Beck
Pink Floyd
Carole King
The Eagles
Bob Marley
Fleetwood Mac
The Faces (+ Rod Stewart solo)
The Carpenters
Dolly Parton
Willy Nelson
Allman Bros
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Hendrix
Yes
The Moody Blues
Van Morrison
Warren Zevon
Linda Ronstadt
Stevie Wonder
The Supremes
Smokey Robinson
and on and on and on

It makes me crazy that even the "Classic Rock" and "Oldies" stations play the same 200 songs over and over again, when there's so much depth in both the pop and the rock albums from '63 to '80. You'd think Queen only ever recorded 5 songs, and Supertramp only recorded 1 album.

Your list is almost exactly like mine! And, I know you couldn't see my playlist, as it is on a high security machine. My ΔT is a bit larger and the T a bit earlier.

and I've sliced out the earlier, smaller hump -- e.g., Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly.

And as I noted, there's some great stuff off the tails of my "peak". I pushed it back far enough to capture Revolver but not Rubber Soul (December '65). On the backside, '76 gets Frampton Comes Alive, but leaves out:
1977:
Rumours (Feb' 77)
Dreamboat Annie
Animals (Pink Floyd)
The Clash
Aja
Exodus (Bob Marley)
Heroes
The Stranger (Billy Joel)
My Aim is True
Bat out of Hell
Even in the Quietest Moments
Peter Gabriel
Slowhand
Heavy Weather
Running on Empty
I Robot (Remember Alan Parsons?!?!)
Equal Rights (Peter Tosh)
Little Queen (Heart)
Terrapin Station
Rock and Roll with the Modern Lovers
AND MORE!! (Motorhead! Triumph! Kiss!)

1978:
Darkness on the Edge of Town
Van Halen
Dire Straits
More Songs about Buildings and Food
Excitable Boy
Waiting for Columbus
Cheap Trick at Budokan
Comes a Time
Who Are You
Dog and Butterfly
Bloody Tourists
Briefcase Full of Blues
Living in the USA (Linda Ronstadt)
Minute by Minute (though for myself, I'm a Tom Johnston partisan)

towards the end of Parry's "Blest Pair of Sirens" always does it for me.

Along with Parry's "Man born of desire", from the Invocation to Music.

And Pink Floyd helps.

there producing new and interesting stuff.

But one of the differences between now and then, is that back then, a whole lot of the best stuff was high-profile, well-known, and commercially successful, especially with the advent of FM radio and the AOR format. CSNY were the biggest-selling group in the US for a while. The Beatles recorded a dozen #1 albums -- in just 8 years.

Here's a simple challenge for anybody born after 1970: Have you ever listened to Queen's A Night at the Opera, start to finish? If not, you can find it in high-quality audio on youtube, officially posted by the band, and I recommend that you do, because I predict it will blow your mind. And if your first response is, "meh, queen, i don't see the big deal, bohemian yadda yadda," then i especially recommend that you do, because you may be really surprised at the range of music genres and lyrical themes.
