August 22, 2016 Open Thread, Saint Nessie's Birthday

August 15 is the 234th day of the year. There are 131 days left.

Today's number is 22

Today's number is Twenty-Two

22 is the product of two primes, 2 and 11
Being a product of 11 generates some fun we'll look at later
22 sevenths has been used as a rough approximation of pi for millenia
22 is titanium, a seriously kick-ass metal, but brittle in a pure state
A cricket pitch is 22 yards long
Catch 22 is a novel by Joseph Heller
A "Catch 22" is a type of gotcha or puzzle such as occur in that novel
.22 and .22LR (long rifle) are common small caliber weapons designations

"Fun" with "math"
1/11 = .090909 repeated forever
1/22 = 1/2 of 1/11 = 0.5 x .0909 = .04545454545 ad infinitum
Thus, a/22 = a x .045454545 etc
In doing mental arithmetic, multiplying by eleven is often easiest done by multiplying by 10 and then adding the original number. For example, 14 x 11 = 10 x 14 + 14 = 140 + 14 = 154
Similarly, multiplying by 22 is often easily done by multiplying by 2 and then multiplying the product by 11. Thus 14 x 22 = 28 x 11 = 280 + 28 = 308
Multiplying by 22 can also be made easier by first multiplying by 11 and then doubling the result. Thus 14 x 22 = (140+14) x 2 = 154 x 2 = 308
22 squared = 484, which just happens to be 4 x 11 squared. Hint: (2 x 11)(2 x 11) = (2 x 2)(11 x 11)

Observation - Poem by Dorothy Parker

If I don't drive around the park,
I'm pretty sure to make my mark.
If I'm in bed each night by ten,
I may get back my looks again,
If I abstain from fun and such,
I'll probably amount to much,
But I shall stay the way I am,
Because I do not give a damn.

at the Egyptian Museum in Berlin, Nefertiri's head and all. Oddly, wearing a T-shirt from the gift shop there for dead husband, and thinking about new settings for the two clay scarabs I got there and made into earrings. It all has to so with some ankhs I made into earrings, gone now, from I think Museum of Science and Industry, but that seems like a misplaced memory as well as ear jewelry.

I also learned that my dead-pet petsitter joined the sky at age 39. 5 kids, two from her, three acquired. Bye, Missy, Sasha and Amino.

nothing to the record Walk Like an Egyptian -- she neither drummed nor sang a lead vocal. I'm not sure whether she sang some of the harmonies. The session was a nightmare, in which the women were bullied by their new producer, and it left a sour taste in their mouths that they've never really gotten rid of. And then, the media's response to the video -- which was to anoint Hoffs as "the lead singer", based mainly on the fact that:
A. She sang lead on the last verse
and
B. She was (and still is, actually) excruciatingly beautiful
-- planted the seeds of discord that eventually tore the band apart.

Which is all pretty sad, I think, because although it wasn't their own composition, I think their performance of WLAE -- especially the vocal harmony -- is fucking brilliant.

to do. The video shows her doing the whistle break, but that's a video -- I don't think she actually did, at least not on the record. Don't know for sure, though.

I've never seen an explanation of why she didn't play the drum part.

and interesting reality is that in fatal bus, train, and plane crashes, the vehicles generally are carrying fewer passengers than is usual. There is a statistically significant failure of people to book, or to show up. Almost always, the missing don't know, consciously, just why they decided to not be there.

But sometimes people are like the Twilight Zone 22 lady. Here's a boy who, in dream, foresaw Newtown.

and the proposition -- that people can perceive physical events that haven't happened yet -- is preposterous.

reductionist and closed-minded though it may be, i will continue to believe in physics.

the analysis of the 4 9/11 flights is flat-out wrong -- one of the flights had a higher load average than its average over the preceding few months -- even without considering that it attempted no correlations to historical patterns for that particular day of the year, i.e., the second Tuesday following Labor Day. This latter omission renders the entire analysis pointless, because travel patterns are not random. It's comparable to analyzing a crash on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and concluding that a bunch of suicidal people presciently chose to fly that day.

People cannot sense physical events in the future. They can't dream them, they can't feel them, they can't know them, because there is simply no way for such information to make its way backwards in time; and indeed, generally speaking they can't be known -- can't be predicted with any certainty -- due to the chaotic properties of complex systems.

Also, there's no such thing as ghosts. Or Astral Projection. The Reality of ESP is that nobody has ever provided a convincing, controlled demonstration that there's anything there -- because there isn't.

that you worship at the altar of physics; I gave you a physicist; but you don't like that physicist; apparently he is a Wrong physicist; you command me to investigate beyond the one page; which I certainly have; and long before any intertubes, ever were born. And long after. Too.

Your denial is amusing. We know, for instance, from the true-life documentary film Interstellar, that humans can move around time. Including physically.

Also, astral projecting, is fun. With, or without, ghosts.

The common human perception of time is illusory. As is the common human perception of . . . everything.

Maybe you could try being an Observer. Then you would Know these sorts of things.

Freeman Dyson is a GCC denier. And a physicist. These things happen. Just because a physicist "believes" in ESP doesn't mean the physicist has a working, testable hypothesis for how ESP actually works here in the material world. It just means the physicist doesn't care about having a working, testable hypothesis about some things in which the physicist feels some compulsion to believe. Dyson doesn't actually care whether GCC is happening, because, you know, we'll all just fly away to Titan or something. Cuz we gots da smarts!

As to investigating beyond that one page, the point is that the guy's 9/11 numbers are both plain wrong, and naively investigated. You sent me a link to a page in a book. I'm not going to debunk the whole book. I don't need to, because my amazing ESP powers inform me that it is fundamentally flawed in its epistemology, probably multiple times on the average page.

I do find wormhole-based sci-fi cool-travel to be amusing. Anything that ever travels through an actual wormhole anywhere, any time, is going to come out the other side decomposed into, at best, a plasma. Which I suppose would be an illuminating experience.

To call time an "illusion" is to grossly oversimplify whatever exactly it is that time is. Whatever the hell it is, we cannot move backward in it, and we can only move forward in it according to some very fixed principles. Don't get your hopes up for near-light-speed travel.

in the town down the hill, the wingers were taking their turn in control of the city council (these things move in cycles), and they decided Something Must Be Done about the street-begging. Their solution was typically wingerish: punish the beggars. They made some Rules that prohibited "loud and aggressive" begging, and ixnayed remaining in one place for too long—one, if begging, had to keep moving.

Then came Christmastime. Loud and aggressive beggars proceeded to plant themselves on the streetcorners. Ceaselessly ringing obnoxious bells. Demanding the humans put monies in their little red kettles. These beggars were there, in the same spots, all day, every day.

So I went to the wingers, and I made a Complaint. Weren't these Salvation Army beggars, I pointed out, the very definition of the sort of beggars prohibited in the Rules? Loud, aggressive, and Not Moving? Surely, I urged, with these red-kettled beggars, and pursuant to the Rules, Something Must Be Done.

Nothing was done. The wingers, they didn't think it funny. They never do.

Doing some etymology today debating the authenticity of a document purportedly from a speech given in 1712 by "Willie Lynch". Fortunately some of the words (and concepts) never appeared in English until decades after. I was going to use the word "boogeyman" as an example of how a document using that word could be debunked and ended up with KC and the Sunshine Band....

The latest Hillary campaign talking point (as regurgitated by Joe Romm) to get progressives and independents to fall in line (emphasis added):

“Clinton’s margin over Trump among this age group [under 30] is lower than we’d expect given how Obama did in the last two election cycles,” explains [FiveThirtyEight electoral analyst Harry] Enten. A key reason is the “unusually high share of under-30 voters saying they’ll vote third party.”

This could matter, “if the election becomes closer.” Indeed, I’d argue it matters even if the election doesn’t become closer, since the margin of victory in this election is also going to send a message to the nation and the world about just how much America does or does not embrace the values and policies of Donald Trump.

What utter garbage. If you count every vote for another candidate as a vote against Trump, then it doesn't matter if progressives and independents vote for Hillary or Jill Stein. #JillNotHill
