Good Morning, 99%'ers! Biggrin

It has been raining here in beautiful western North Carolina since Thursday evening and it looks like more is in store during the rest of the week. I am not complaining as we have needed rain. The county where I live, Transylvania County, gets more rainfall than anywhere else in the US outside the Pacific northwest. Average rainfall in the western part of the county is 92 inches per year. I live in the eastern part of the county and our rainfall is less, but still enough for me to say that I live in a rain forest. In fact, in 2013, the city where I live got over 100 inches of rain that year. Ironically, the county north of us, Buncombe County, home of Asheville, gets lowest average rainfall in the state.

All this rain makes it very easy to grow things. I never had much of a green thumb, but here, no matter what I plant, it grows. One of the things that grows in great abundance is moss. In my own yard, there are a number of mosses, none of which I can identify by name. But there is a woman here who has made a career of mosses. She is known as Mossin' Annie and she is one of a very small number of nationally known experts of mosses. I have visited her home and moss nursery which she calls a mossery and it is very interesting. She invites guests to take off their shoes and walk on the moss. It is a delight for the feet. If you only click on one link in this diary, click on the Mossin' Annie link. It is great reading.

So it has been raining since Thursday evening which is highly unusual for this area. We get a lot of rain, but it usually does not lock in all day for days on end like it has recently. My husband and four of his friends are riding the Fall Mountains to Coast bike ride across North Carolina this week. It has been raining every day and to make matters worse, they have been camping out since Saturday night. More rain is predicted this week so it has been somewhat miserable for them. But we have needed the rain, and they will get over it if they are real men! Wink

In honor of the rain, I am going to link a few rain songs in today's Open Thread.

No listing of rain songs would be complete without the classic Gene Kelly singing and dancing in Singing in the Rain.

I have always been a huge lifelong Everly Brothers fan. Here is Crying in the Rain. I am still very sad that the Everly Brothers never made up permanently before Phil's death in 2014 from lung disease.

Willie Nelson sings the country classic, Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain.
[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JA644rSZX1A]

For a very different change of pace, here's Guns and Roses with November Rain. Slash does an awesome guitar solo near the end. IMO, this was the best GNR song that they ever did.
[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SbUC-UaAxE]

Do you want warmer weather, how about some Summer Rain by Johnny Rivers? This is my all time favorite Johnny Rivers song and one that makes me feel good every time I hear it. I had found an early video of this song which I originally had loaded up to this diary. Then I found this one of Johnny Rivers singing Summer Rain live about one year ago. He is now over 70 years old and still sounds the same.
[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FK7w3QfH9RM]

I may see a little blue sky today. Even though I do not mind the rain, it would be a welcome change. Now if fall would show up, I would be a very happy woman. Smile

One last note. When Edward Snowden joined Twitter yesterday, Republican candidate, George Pataki called for Twitter to shut down Snowden's account. What ensued was rather hilarious.

Y'all have a great day! Smile

I am going to publish this early because I just got a call that three of the guys are bailing and I will be having an unexpected house guest tonight. I am going to have to drive to another town to pick them up today, so I will be on and off. I will try to diary sit as much as I am able while I change sheets and do more laundry.

here's another rain song by some guy named Dickey, I Betts you may have heard of him before:

Here's one for the blue skies that I hope come soon for you and the riders, by a band that that Dickie fella used to play in that you maybe might have heard of before:

Now I gotta' quit mossin' around and carry my butt to work.

Later...

could that band have been one that was called the Allman Joys at one time? Of course, that was before Dickey Betts and the other guys came to be the Allman Brothers.

Good choices, JtC. I always liked Blue Sky. Smile

so fun to see the open thread with 'rain' theme. Greetings to you all , good see you having raising hell, awareness, and dancing to music as well.

After more than a few miles spent walking in the rain with a guide enjoying the wild life here, Jakkalbessie and I have spent the day uploading final stories and pictures to our travel blog on our most recent 4 weeks in Kruger National Park in South Africa, read some news, take care of some bills.

Just took a break and decided to post my first here at Caucus99percent.

One of these days will learn how to post pics here.

All the best !

We need all that rain for our over 250 waterfalls, including Whitewater Falls which is claimed to be the highest continually flowing waterfall east of the Mississippi. And they are still discovering new ones. There are places in the western part of the county where humans have not set foot for over a century. I probably should do an Open Thread diary on it some day.

Since you have all that moss, you no doubt have lots of tardigrades. Here is a site about how to make 'em your pets. As it says: "They may be microscopic, but are very cool!" ; )

Standing water everywhere. The forecast calls for more than 50% chance of rain for several more days.

The rain is welcome, but late. The trees are drought stressed and the leaves have been falling since mid-August. I have some River Birch that are done for the year, hopefully only for the year. Even Juniper is turning yellow. Juniper is very drought tolerant, but the soil moisture is really low.

walk with those brothers and sisters in the sunshine.

Well, the Pataki guy seems to have lost his .... ok, nevermind.

Here the rain started yesterday exactly when I finally pulled myself up to spray paint my fence...so now my paint is all bubbly, but what the heck. I will spray paint again to cover the bubbles...Today I am supposed to paint my deck. I kinda wish for more rain as an excuse not to do it... Smile

I have nothing more to say. Just wishing you all a good day. Walk, you guys and gals, come rain or sunshine, it's always great to just go on. (And I can't find the song anymore that was once posted in the EB, which I liked so much, about "going on"). I think you know which one it was. Smile

I am so sorry, I misbehave, it should be taken as joking. You are a specialty among the music lovers, I believe. I wished I had learned something other than the piano when I was young. Employees accessed Chaffetz's 2003 application for a Secret Service job starting 18 minutes after the start of a congressional hearing in March about the latest scandal involving drunken behavior by senior agents. Some forwarded the information to others. At least 45 employees viewed the file.

Chaffetz applied to join the Secret Service through a field office and was rejected and labeled "Better Qualified Applicant" for unknown reasons. Chaffetz said he never interviewed with the agency and does not know why his application was declined.

One week later, Assistant Director Ed Lowery suggested leaking embarrassing information about Chaffetz in retaliation for aggressive investigations by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee into a series of agency missteps and scandals, the report said. Days later, on April 2, the information about Chaffetz unsuccessfully applying for a job at the Secret Service was published by The Daily Beast, an Internet publication.

"Some information that he might find embarrassing needs to get out. Just to be fair," Lowery wrote March 31 in an email to fellow Assistant Director Faron Paramore.

Law enforcement and military civil institutions. The executive branch did not direct the Secret Service, they acted independently. I usually disagree with the small government types, because they want to dismantle the social safety net. Want to save tax dollars. How about the FBI, DEA, Secret Service, NSA, CIA and military budgets?

I could make up something really funny, for some people, and really offensive, for other people, for Chaffetz embarassing news. It wouldn't be fair to the gerbil.

Dangerous democracy

Catalonia's Supreme Court indicted the acting head of the Catalan regional government on Tuesday after he pushed ahead with a referendum on independence from Spain last year despite such a vote being ruled unconstitutional by the courts.

The preliminary charges of disobedience, abuse of authority and usurping authority are leveled at Artur Mas, the most visible face of Catalan separatist aspirations, just two days after his party won a regional election.

Secessionist parties on Sunday secured an absolute majority in the regional parliament, although they won 48 percent of the votes cast.

Slap in the face

Meanwhile, Iraq has been turning a blind eye to all the Russian transport planes flying over its airspace despite U.S. objections.

Russia cannot deliver weapons to Syria without Iraq's acquiescence. Huge Russian condor transport planes use an air corridor over Iran and Iraq to transport weapons and personnel. U.S. officials have asked Iraq to prevent the overflight of Russian military transports when they met on Sept. 5. However, their entreaties were ignored.[3]

Iraq's Shiite-led government appears to be more loyal to Iran than the United States....

Further demonstration of Iraq's non-cooperation with the United States surfaced over the weekend: Iraq has reached an understanding with Russia, Iran and Syria and to share intelligence about the Islamic State. Iraqi officials kept Washington in the dark during negotiations.

The intelligence sharing really spooked the Pentagon

Pentagon officials do not know what secrets the Iraqi government may be telling Moscow, after Iraqi leaders unexpectedly entered into an intelligence-sharing agreement with Russia this weekend.
The Defense Department’s second-in-command told the Senate on Tuesday the agreement came as a surprise to military intelligence and Pentagon teams are scrambling to make sure classified intelligence from the U.S. does not make its way into the hands of Russian, Syrian or Iranian authorities.

U.S. officials must make clear the high cost to Iraq if it fails to close its air space and enforce a ban on Russian overflights. More than expressions of concern, coercive diplomacy is called for. Washington's continued support for Iraq should depend on Baghdad's cooperation as an ally. If Baghdad continues its non-cooperation, the U.S. should directly arm the Kurds to more effectively fight ISIS, and reconsider its opposition to a referendum on independence by Iraqi Kurdistan.

Bernie Sanders Tells the Truth: Former Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich on His Surging Campaign specifically about the digital monopolies.

[video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBVtyRSsoXo]

JUAN GONZÁLEZ: And you recently, in an op-ed piece in The New York Times, talked about the digital monopolies and the need to break up some of these companies now that have such enormous influence over our lives—the Googles and the Amazons and the Facebooks. Could you talk about that?

ROBERT REICH: Well, up until quite recently, we had antitrust scrutiny, very careful antitrust scrutiny of some of these big high-tech firms. They are creating larger and larger entry barriers. It’s harder for other companies to get into the business, because they have platforms that are basically network monopolies over whether it’s search or shopping or whatever you want. And those huge—that huge market power, those network monopolies end up giving them the power to keep competitors out—ultimately charge higher prices, but also deter innovation. We need to apply antitrust law. I don’t mean we necessarily have to bust them up, but we’ve got to make sure that we don’t stifle innovation, and we’ve got to make absolutely sure that consumers down the line are not ending up paying too much.

JUAN GONZÁLEZ: And you mention in your book—I thought it was a fascinating nugget—that Google and Apple are spending more money acquiring the patents of others than they are—and fighting over these patents in court cases, than they are in actually new research and development.

ROBERT REICH: And also on litigation and on lobbying. I mean, Google is now the number one lobbyist in Washington. It’s simply kind of a consequence of having more and more market power. And it’s not—I’m not saying Google is a bad company. I’m not saying Apple is bad. I’m not saying that anybody—people—companies are not bad—people are not companies, companies are not people, despite what the Supreme Court says. But what you’ve got to be careful of in an economy is the aggregation of market power that turns into political power, inevitably. And we’ve seen that again and again. And that’s what antitrust laws were created for in 1890, the Sherman Act. And yet antitrust scrutiny has waned over time.

AMY GOODMAN: ... (Sanders) and was asked about his position on financial institutions and his support for reinstating the Glass-Steagall Act, which separated commercial from investment banking and was repealed in 1999. This is a part of what he said.

SEN. BERNIE SANDERS: We have six of the largest financial institutions in this country who have assets equivalent—assets of about $10 trillion, which is equivalent to about 60 percent of the GDP of the United States. So, point number one, you have a handful of huge financial institutions that have enormous economic clout. They issue a significant amount of the mortgages in this country and the credit cards in this country. So the first issue is, for a vibrant economy, do we think it is a good idea for a handful of financial institutions to have that much economic clout? ...
What Wall Street has done is create a business model which says, "We really don’t care about small and medium-sized businesses. What we care is about being an island unto ourselves," coming up with the most esoteric financial tools imaginable, that nobody in the world knows, but enables Wall Street to make huge, huge amounts of money in highly dangerous and speculative activities. That led us to the Wall Street crash of 2008, which created the worst economic downturn since the Great Recession. I personally believe that the business model of Wall Street is fraud. ...
....So, to my mind, what we have to do is, A, re-establish Glass-Steagall, maintain those separate entities, but second of all, more importantly, we have got to break them up.
AMY GOODMAN: That’s Bernie Sanders. Actually, Glass-Steagall was repealed under the Clinton administration in 1999, Robert Reich.

ROBERT REICH: Bernie Sanders is right: We’ve got to re-establish Glass-Steagall. Repealing it—

AMY GOODMAN: And explain why it’s so important.

ROBERT REICH: Well, because after the crash of 1929, the United States set out to prevent that kind of crazy risk taking by the banking sector that led to the crash of 1929—we’re not talking about 2008, we’re talking about 1929. One thing we did was separate commercial banking from investment banking, so that people’s deposits, the ordinary savings of ordinary people, would not be used for gambling operations by the investment banks. We ought to maintain that. I mean, that’s one of the reasons that we got into trouble again.

We also need to bust up the biggest banks. Bernie Sanders actually understated the reality. ..I mean, they are so large that they are—just because of their political clout and their scale, they are gaining more and more market share of the entire banking industry. That’s dangerous. It’s dangerous for the economy. It’s dangerous for our political culture, because those banks have a great deal of political power.

works out well for your Guys!

Today is 'Day Three' of almost continuous rain--with a couple more days to go.

We're having a little pizza and pasta 'party,' but I'll be back to post the BLM piece at today's EB.

Not to worry, though--the BLM founders made it explicit that although they will not officially endorse a Presidential candidate, activists who desire to make an endorsement as someone affiliated with the BLM movement, are welcome to do so.

(They are very specific about this. Please read the very brief excerpt below, and the full excerpt and piece, once I post it at today's EB--after we eat, and relax for a while.)

"Black Lives Matter as a network will not, does not, has not, ain't going to endorse any candidates," Garza said. "Now if there are activists within the movement that want to do that independently, they should feel free and if that's what makes sense for their local conditions, that's fantastic. But as a network, that's not work we're engaged in yet."

Quickly, a Good News blurb:

We've had water filters installed on our piping for years, to remove toxic waste. But I've always been skeptical that the water filtration pitchers were anything but a gimmick.

Until recently, that is.

Purchased one of these,

and, now, I wouldn't want to live without it!

Yahoo

I imagine that I'm behind the curve on this--it's partly because we've been content just buying cases of drinking water, and never really thought about it. Or, at least, that's my excuse.

Wink

Seriously, the 'quality' of the drinking water is far superior to the usual bottled water that we purchase. So, for apparent luddites like myself, you might want to consider trying one of these. It's probably a bit cheaper, in the long run, as well.

(Although I've never tried to actually calculate the savings. And we still buy bottled water to carry with us when we leave home, just in smaller quantities.)

Have a good one, Folks!

Bye

Mollie

the water there was terrible with way too much mineral content. We used a Brita water filtration pitcher and it was wonderful. We do not need one where we are now, but I do recommend them for anyone who lives in an area where the water is not great. They mainly filter out minerals but not germs or bacteria. Still when the water is filtered, your water, coffee and tea will taste so much better. I use the tea test as a rule of thumb for determining if my water needs filtration.

@ Lowes Food's out of Hickory, is the cheapest and is reverse osmosis water. I tested the water. The PPM is 4 and the pH is ~6.8. Tap water PPM is usually 1500-3000 PPM including numerous heavy metals.

a kit to test our water? (And see if our numbers are badly skewed.)

As I mentioned to Nancy, even though I'm really enjoying this pitcher--and the water is some of the best that I've tasted--on second thought, we're willing to continue to buy bottled water that is less tasty, if it could be detrimental to our health to use an under-the-counter, and water pitcher filtration system--even as a supplement.

Is the test simple? Can a test kit be purchased at a home improvement store, or a hardware store?

Postscript: When I referred to the 'quality' being superior (above), I was referring to taste, since I've obviously have never taken an measure of the quality of our tap water, or the pitcher-filtered water.

milk, cocoa or Nesquik) most mornings, and I've used bottled water for years to make the coffee, as well as tea.

Until I read Tim's comment (below), I thought that I had hit on a good deal.

I must say, the pitcher-filtered water definitely tastes better than the bottled purified water that we routinely buy. But, I may have to rethink using the pitcher, after all.

Sad

OTOH, I'm glad that I brought it up--better to find out the difference now, rather than later.

*Sigh*

Hey --
I'm emailing you now because I think it's about time this country had a smart, tenacious, passionate woman as president.
Pitch in $1 or more before tonight's midnight fundraising deadline, and help elect Hillary: Thanks. Bill

If that's not a fraud Bill Clinton, then it's just awful. I don't know, may be something is wrong with me, but I find that ... don't know, but not what I would want if I were HRC. Ok, forget it.

The Democratic Senatorial Committee called me today. It is the last day of a reporting period and they want to win the horse race. I got my oil changed instead of donating.

... my parents had the same symptoms when they came into that age. I donated to three people/organizations tonight. I hate my email inbox so much that I gave it "very bad password" just to remind me not to donate too much. I am officially now poor, so I should behave like I am someone who has not enough money, right? Who the hell are all those people, who want money from me?
