Turkish government considers holding a referendum on the restoration of the death penalty.
In an interview with the "FAS", the Turkish foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu spoke about the possibility of reinstating the death penalty in his country. A referendum could take place.
The death penalty is of course prohibited by the terms of the EU, so I suppose that means Turkey has no interest in joining the EU.

Thanks
For the report!

I think about those 60,000 detainees
being mistreated, tortured, dying as we speak. The government has filled a mass grave for "traitors." No one knows how many lie there. The government doesn't need a legal death penalty, they are killing people already.

Re: mass grave for traitors
Yes, the same edition of FAZ spoke about the "Friedhof der Verraeter" (the graveyard of the traitors) for the "Putschisten".

There are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns – the ones we don't know we don't know.

and many of the soldiers were young recruits who
thought they were on a training exercise. Before they were killed they were treated brutally for days on end. It's a descent into barbarism and it comes so easily. Isn't there anything that can stop it?

This is exactly why I have trouble...
keeping silent when people keep screaming about Islam being "a religion of Peace".
Any time it becomes the majority religion and starts taking political power... it gets ugly.

Every Religion Is Dangerous Like This
We don't hear about internal events in Myanmar and Malaysia, but the allegedly peaceful Buddhists are attacking the local Muslims. As I looked for this link, I found that the problem is more widespread across South Asia than I knew, with such attacks happening in Sri Lanka, in Indonesia, with Muslim attacks on Buddhists happening in Bangladesh (what would George Harrison say!) and Thailand.
Of course, we cannot exclude the alleged followers of Yeshua in the USA for their attacks on those of other religions, such as the attack on the Sikhs of Oak Creek, Wisconsin a few years ago being but one example.
So for all of those religions whose supreme being claims to be one of peace, one needs to ask why the followers don't behave in a similar manner.

Erdogan more dangerous than ISIL
He's been open about wanting to impose Sharia Law on turkey. The US has been allowing him to get away with this. Arms sales at risk if they try? So what! We US taxpayers pay those costs, not the Turks!
I noticed somewhere today that there are large "popular" protests at Incirlik. If the US hasn't moved the nukes from that base yet, it only shows that We the People allow fools to have far too much leeway and far too little oversight.

Difficult situation
and hard to figure out the players. Naturally we will never get any truth from western media. Erdogan, an authoritarian, apparently has wanted Gulen extradited back to Turkey for several years. It is troublesome that our tax dollars are funding more than 100 charter schools run by the Gulen's organization. Additionally Gulen's organization contributed to the Clinton foundation.
The crackdown is truly worrisome. Yet, expected and it does not matter that Erdogan is Muslim. I am fairly sure if there was a coup attempt in the US or any western country the victors would start rounding up people.
Is our media reporting that they are protests outside the NATO base that houses 50 or so nuclear weapons? This situation could become a powder keg.
The problem with Turkey is Erdogan
There's a reason why Ataturk emphasized secularism.
