More bizarreness in this election

In all my years on this planet, I have never seen anyone do what Ted Cruz did last night.

One of the most emotional moments of the convention so far began with 20,000 loyalists greeting Cruz with thunderous applause and ended with thunderous boos as it became clear a succinct endorsement wasn't coming.
"A big middle finger to this entire convention," said Shaun Ireland, a Texas delegate, just minutes later on the convention floor. "This is the worst possible thing he could have done."
Cruz, infamous in the Senate for a reputation of looking out only for himself, proved again that he was willing to go it alone as the party rallied around Trump during an evening of speeches from Republican heavyweights and some of its most ambitious politicians.
"Wow, Ted Cruz got booed off the stage, didn't honor the pledge! I saw his speech two hours early but let him speak anyway. No big deal!" Trump said late Wednesday on Twitter.

Uh, yeah. It's a big deal. This is DAY FOUR of the convention. I've never seen the GOP so close to a national meltdown.

As the crowd quickly turned on him, the first-term lawmaker could only muster a pained smile as he left the stage. Security escorted his wife, Heidi, out of the arena after the speech, CNN reported. At least one Trump supporter shouted “Goldman Sachs” at Cruz's wife as she left the floor, the network said, a reference to her role as a managing director at the firm from which she took a leave of absence during her husband's campaign.

Now there's a chant I'd like to hear at the Democratic convention.
poll0.jpg

Despite this discord, not everyone believes Trump's chances are sunk, including Michael Moore.

Filmmaker Michael Moore is causing a stir with his comments about Donald Trump. The famously liberal Moore says he's sorry to say it, but he thinks the Republican could win the presidency.
In a Wednesday night appearance on an online edition of HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher," Moore said he thought the verbal attacks on Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton at this week's Republican National Convention play to "a lot of people" Trump has to win over to become president.
"I think Trump is going to win. I'm sorry," he said. "People are in denial of this, but the chance of winning is really, really good."

I'm betting we are only one election cycle away from the Dems having a similar meltdown.

Cruz is now in competition with Chuck Schumer, John McCain and I think Cruz wins it for this one!

I think Michael Moore is, terrifyingly, correct. Wake up super delegates.

HRC is outraising Trump 30:1 with megadoners and outspending him 40:1 and the best she can do is tie him.

Things will not get better. They can only get worse. People are seeing the full Trump crazy and it's not moving the dial for HRC. If this doesn't move the dial, then nothing will

This is why the Democrats have superdelagates, to override the results of the primary process and ensure that a patently unelectable candidate doesn't get the nomination.

Trump is clearly absolutely "unelectable" and "unsuited" for the job, but if HRC is tied with him? What does that say about HRC? It says she is also unelectable.

We have an election with two unelectable candidates. Wake up and smell the Trump vodka super delegates.

spending with no result the fact that Obama, Warren and Sanders have now endorsed her and HRC and Trump are STILL tied. And this is before the Rep machine gets really revved up.

The fact that establishment Reps are not endorsing Trump just strengthens his argument as being an outsider, and could be all for show.

The Gooper Prime Directive has always been loyalty to the nominee, and although there are typically divisions in the ranks before the Conventions, Republicans are traditionally much better than Democrats at falling in line behind their candidate afterwards, and that's especially true this year with Hillary running.

That's why I think this double game that Cruz, Kasich, Bush, Romney and all the other Big Bank financed party elites are playing will backfire.

They are hoping to sabotage Trump, blame him for the loss, and then run one of their own against Hillary in 2020. But if Hillary wins, the Gooper freakout will be so intense that anyone who is now so proudly not on board the Trump Express will be the ones cowering in the back when the the rank and file blames them afterward.

Kasich certainly should watch out if he's thinking of throwing Ohio Hillary's way, because elephants have long memories and the only thing they hate more than donkeys are other elephants who wander too far from the herd.

I know many of you will not agree with this comment, but he knew Cruz would not support him or my guess is that Cruz did not provide a promise to support him during his speech. Therefore, Trump gave him his time, and made Cruz look like Judas. This attack along with many others just makes Trump stronger- looked at the 17 candidates he beat, with the most votes ever and he just keeps get stronger- look at all the polls. I would compare him to the slow moving lumbering mummy's of the old movies.

I do not care or like Trump, but I truly believe he will believe the Hillary. Because he does not play by the rules, and EVERYONE (establishment- i.e. look at Nate Silver predictions of Trump's demise- at least 7 of them) underestimates him. Trump is a New Yorker (tough people and fighters) plus he is a ruthless business person, dominates/plays the media, his supporters are hardcore/enthusiastic (unlike Hillary's), he is anti-establishment (or that is his brand) and finally he does things his own.

To bad the democrats do not realize this line of thought and keep supporting their flawed candidate. By the way, Trump would be a non factor if anyone else ran against him.

many on the left, because of several factors. (Which I don't go into, now.)

Anyhoo, I'll reserve my final judgment until I see what the Dems come up with next week. (and 'who' the VP pick is)

Bottom line, even while the MSM has flogged the RNC Convention to death, they continue to comment on the high level of activist energy. After what the Dems have done to Bernie, I'm doubtful that the DNC will be able to match it.

If Repubs are smart, they will use the Trump children a lot in the Rust Belt states (the sons, anyway). Donald Jr was able to do something that certainly Chelsea couldn't come close to--relate to working class men. He was trained in the real estate business on construction sites--and drives a CAT. I think that Trump may win a handful of Rust Belt states by a landslide.

FSC hasn't even driven a car herself since 1996--she told this to a convention of auto dealers--one of her highly paid speeches, I would imagine.

[Edit - Corrected date to 1996/corrected typo/provided a quote/added phrase.]

"The last time I actually drove a car myself was 1996, and I remember it very well," she told the National Automobile Dealers Association's convention in New Orleans. "Unfortunately, so does the Secret Service, which is why I haven't driven since then."

I'm sorta surprised that this factoid hasn't been flogged to death by the right-wingers.

This is one of the most interesting elections in my lifetime. OTOH, I'll be sorta glad to see it over, for obvious reasons.

Let's review:

1) Trump is not running a serious campaign.

2) Clinton does not have to win more than one swing state.

3) The Repub elites don't like Trump, and the feeling is mutual.

4) The Repubs have a far more successful "third party" alternative (Johnson) than do the Dems (Stein).

5) Trump is a crook, and thus liable to impeachment -- never mind his unpopularity even with Republican Congresses.

6) Trump is not half as bright as Clinton, whose connections may prove useful if the election were to be rigged.

Although I knew him, I didn't vote for him when he ran the first time. He ran against a popular dem, but upset him. He would refuse to sign the "feed bill," which was the first bill passed by the legislators to pay for the session. He refused to sign it until he got stuff he wanted and he always did. He vetoed bill after bill, but he really improved out state and tried to get marijuana legalized in the late 90's! I voted for him for the second term because I liked what he was doing. He was effective, pure and simple. Raggedy Andy says he will vote for him. I'm for Stein, but I'm not throwing out the possibility of Johnson. He's actually pretty popular in the state and could take New Mexico, which would throw a wrench in the electoral college.

Security.

I've heard Johnson in radio interviews heavily on the POTUS Channel (with libertarian-leaning talk hosts) in the past month.

Certainly, I agree with a number of his stances on some social issues.

But, one of his major concerns is 'cutting the deficit'--on the backs of the poor and elderly, by downsizing so-called 'entitlement' programs.

BTW, his stance regarding prison reform is in keeping with many Repubs and Dems. Even the Koch Brothers--because they want to slash spending on incarceration--are calling for major prison reforms. Which, of course, are long overdue. And I favor them.

But, IMO, that's no reason to elect someone who's core message is cutting the deficit on backs of the most vulnerable.

Heck, if that's what I wanted--I'd just vote for FSC!

Biggrin

Seriously, if you have access to XM Radio, please check out the podcasts of his interviews on the POTUS Channel. XM Radio is paywalled, of course. Or, I would gladly post them here, so that everyone could hear him.

[Edit: 'in' should have been 'him'--changed it to Johnson]

Politico article says it all.

Their are polls showing her behind in PA, that state is part of said "blue wall". He is beating her in FL, to another sign of things not going so well.

If Trump can pickup a section of the white vote that typically votes Democrat, aka the labor vote, and through an ugly general election season make people in general not want to come out at all for anyone, he can win. And don't kid yourself, Clinton is an easy target for mud throwing. This years election is going to be ugly.

There's very little hard evidence at this point. $$Hillary is in free-fall in some of the swing states, losing 11 points in weeks in one.
And I'm not sure Trump needs much of a campaign. Those for him or $$Hillary are pretty locked-in at this point, and it's those that aren't that will decide the winner, and many of those people aren't going to be affected much by expensive ad's on the TV box.
This DNCleaks business may be the final nail in the coffin for the $$Hillary camp, as the remaining Berners join the bluetogreen movement, or decide to follow-through on the 'bust' part of Bernie or Bust.
Yes, it's a lot of may-bes, but I honestly think Trump has a 50-50 chance, what with the terrible pick of Kaine for Veep, and the surge of support for Jill Stein.
I haven't seen anyone disprove the statement that $$Hillary's numbers always keep trending down. And they can't go much lower if she's going to win.
Honestly, I can't believe that the Dems have allowed this to become a contest. IMO all they had to do was feign sincerity of support for Sander's ideas, and make enthusiastic noises about progressivism for a few months before returning to their usual corporate grifting, and they'd beat Trump going away. But apparently $$Hillary and DWS just couldn't bring themselves to make nice with Bernie after he hurt their fee-fees, so they'd rather embrace the 'moderate' GOP voters instead.
This election is insanity, and it's going to get so much worse.

My inbox is a taste of the inanity to come.

Every day there's some new "Trump...KKK" headline shouting at me from my inbox, it's pathetic. And most of it is from one of the 6 billion DNC fundraising front-groups, like 'End Citizen's United', which is now quite literally nothing but a fundraising org for the DNC.

I wonder what their freakout spin will be when Trump promises during a debate NOT to bomb Syria and go to war with Russia? I suppose they'll go all 'war is peace, truth is a lie, poor is rich...' on us.

at the 1976 convention, nor at any time thereafter.

Humphrey did not endorse McGovern at the 1972 convention, waiting until mid-October to offer tepid support.

Rockefeller did not endorse Goldwater at the 1964 convention. Far from it.

For Cruz' alleged "middle finger," and the accompanying "thunderous boos," these pale beside Rockefeller's remarks, and the reaction:

Convention organizers had only given the vanquished Rockefeller five minutes to speak to the convention, but his remarks were a concentrated blast against the extremism and racism he said were ruining the party. "These are people who have nothing in common with Americanism," said Rockefeller, standing beneath a portrait of Abraham Lincoln. "The Republican Party must repudiate these people."

The crowd booed. "We want Barry!" they chanted. Then the noisemakers picked up. The Rockefeller haters blew squeeze-horns and toy trumpets and hooters. Someone pounded a giant bass drum. Those with cowbells got busy.

Rockefeller couldn't be heard and stopped talking. Goldwaterites seated in the rafters shouted themselves hoarse. Organizers, who were all in the Goldwater camp, reminded the speaker that he had a time limit. "You control the audience, and I'll make mine five minutes," he snapped. He was exhausted, having been kept up the night before by prank phone calls to his hotel room.

His remarks were interrupted 22 times in five minutes. "This is still a free country, ladies and gentlemen," Rockefeller said, condemning "infiltration and takeover of established political parties by communist and Nazi methods."

"It was as if Rockefeller were poking with a long lance and prodding a den of hungry lions," wrote Theodore White in Making of the President. "They roared back at him."

Rockefeller launched his campaign to toughen New York's laws at a press conference in January 1973 . . . He called for something unheard of: mandatory prison sentences of 15 years to life for drug dealers and addicts — even those caught with small amounts of marijuana, cocaine or heroin.

"I have one goal and one objective, and that is to stop the pushing of drugs and to protect the innocent victim," Rockefeller said.

Getting Tough Catches On

From the start, Rockefeller's policy drew sharp criticism from drug treatment experts and some politicians, who called the sentences draconian.

But no one really understood what the laws would mean or how many millions of people they would touch.
