Doubtful the Turkey Coup Will Succeed.
The last gasps of a dying neocon dream. One final putsch from the soon to be purged class of Turkish colonels running guns and supplies into Syria.
The crowds appear to support continuity (the government), with scenes of people on and in front of tanks (like we saw in Egypt and China) and civilians talking soldiers out of their missions (like we saw during the Iranian uprising)
Obama's showing clear support for Erdogan.
At least one army commanding general has declared loyalty to the government.
John Kerry and Vladimir Putin have been meeting in Moscow to talk joint strike missions against al Nusra and ISIS, groups which up until now have been the primary beneficiaries of said gun running colonels.
Erdogan is out of the country, which is a good time to have a coup, although he is facetiming his supporters back home, so he's got that going for him, which is nice.
It's 3 AM in Ankara and Hillary hasn't yet released a statement, probably because Brennan's been too busy to call her back to tell her what to say. Or maybe he'll just email the Clinton Foundation from his AOL account.
Trump, for once, also appears to be keeping his mouth shut. Although how long that will last is anybody's guess.
Man, this Summer just keeps getting weirder and weirder.
Update: Hillary releases statement:

The language after the dash almost sounds like an afterthought.
Still, Max Boot must be having a conniption.

They're not going quietly.
Update III: Erdogan reportedly back in country.
He is blaming a rival Muslim cleric living in the Poconos (that's right, the resort area in Pennsylvania where old comics go to die) of engineering the coup in Turkey.
I can't believe I just wrote that.
Update IV: coup soldiers on the Bosphoro surrendering:

The 28 pages
were released this morning - a good six hours before the Turkey story broke.
Please don't make me defend Obama or his administration.

Thanks stevej, I took it out.
The current working assumption appears to be that our Shroedinger's Cat system is still alive. But what if we all suspect it's not, and the real problem is we just can't bring ourselves to open the box?

Bill Murray...
somehow seems quite appropriate these days.

Thanks
I really loathe this administration

Just for you...

No fan of Erdogan...
...but I'm glad this doesn't seem to be turning into a civil war. TBH when I first saw the headlines that was my first thought.
A real civil war in Turkey...
is easily a top 5 WWIII causing scenario.

funny - she had no such concerns...
...for the coup in Honduras, and expressed the opposite sentiments when it came to Libya or Syria. Turkey is one of our guys in the region, so we'll prop them up right up until we don't.
Look at her statement.
She buries her fuzzy, open to interpretation, government support line basically in a parentheses (the part after the dash) in the middle of a thick paragraph.
Like she's gritting her teeth that she has to follow Obama's and Kerry's leads instead of supporting the colonels like she wants to.
The woman truly never met a coup she didn't like.

The silence about Brasil amazes me
No one makes mention of the corrupt coup by the oligarchy in Brasil. We don't want to rock the Olympic boat. Time was we would have insisted on reinstatement of the president before we would participate. I guess there is too much money at stake to take a principled position.
Instead we are focused on bringing down Maduro in Venezuela. Sadly we are the bad guys.
