Should we move our #DemExit day forward? I'm leaning towards yes.
I for one see no reason to wait till after the convention now.
I actually see one potential benefit to doing it beforehand, and that will be to put ALL of them on notice that if they ever want to see Progressives support their party again then they need to revert back to the core beliefs and principles that the party was supposed to stand for.
I live in Florida, where we still have an upcoming state Primary in August, but as I have no progressives running in my region there is little point in waiting.
Lets get this going now is my opinion.
July 12th is my new Independence day.
Today I am independent of the rigged two party system. I will not be dedicating my efforts to getting candidates elected to their party even if they claim to be "Progressive".
They can come be progressive in our party in 2018 and the Dems can go join the Whigs.

I agree.
I was a registered Green before Bernie began his run. I see no reason not to return to the Greens now that Bernie has made the coronation inevitable. I live in California and the primary is over even if the lawsuits aren't. So I'm reregistering today.

And a picture, too.
Too late...
my Dem exit was the day after the New York primary.
If I change now, it will only hurt Alan Grayson
who I hope to vote for in the FL Dem Primary. After that, I could care less if the Democrats win a thing. I didn't leave them, they left me.

The primary between Grayson and Murphy
Though Grayson has his issues, Murphy is everything wrong with politics and the Democratic party. I only want to cast that one vote.

same here. Being a democrat is making me sick....
but I want to vote for Grayson for Senate so hopefully I can hold out until FL primary. Will be switching to Green and voting for Stein.
I live in Texas and
there is no party designation on my voter registration. We have open primaries.
Darn. I wanted to participate in this!

Yeah and actually, the party considers us affiliated until 12/31
If one votes in the Dem primary, the party considers one a Dem until the end of the calendar year.
Learned last night the Hillary will NOT be working with the Coordinated campaign here locally - Obama did it both runs and Wendy Davis did it in her run. Then again, one local female candidate is being offered office space in the Hillary campaign office here. So SELECT downticket candidates are being assisted and the the others who are generally helped by the person at the top of the ticket can go suck eggs, apparently.

Ok . . . so there really is no way to change it . . .
I sort of feel like we need an organization that endorses candidates from any party, including write-ins in Texas.
Even though someone might not be 100% progressive, we need to have a score that determines who is most progressive.
I don't live in that district, but would have loved to vote for the dude running against Louie Gohmert. I am in Joe Barton's district. Another ass-hole.
I really think we should recruit and promote write-in candidates. They have to register in August. I am sort of a recluse and don't have good opportunity to get involved, except from home. Plus I have no personal income.
But . . . that is my opinion.

I'd really like to have something celebratory attached to it
Like a barbecue.
Perhaps Labor Day would be a good day to celebrate our political independence from the Dems. I'd have said July 4, but some shoes hadn't dropped yet.

I would say
A week before the convention. Maybe go as close as the day before, but preferably 2-3 days ahead of the convention.
I haven't been loyal to the D Party for a few years now.
I figured some things out in recent years and out the window went my Democratic Party loyalty. I campaigned for Obama on election day 2008 and that was pretty much the end for me. I also supported Dean and Gore. I supported Sanders but I didn't considered myself a Democrat. Unfortunately, I live in a deep red state, so it doesn't mean a thing.

then to leave the party the day Bernie drops from the race.

I vote NO, not yet! To the extent that something unexpected
might happen between now and the convention (still hoping she'll be indicted for something!), I want to be able to pressure the Dems "from the inside" as needed. To bring back Bernie, to vote for her successor, to get every possible progressive policy onto the platform, to do whatever helps improve the Dem party.
Will they feel more pressure if we've already left? I don't know. But I doubt it. They've been saying all along that the Dems need to decide for themselves what the party should be. I don't think they're going to get more interested in independent ideas if the independents leave so soon after joining. They'll consider you fickle.
I'll leave the Dem party the day after the convention in the likely event that the Dems disappoint me.
YMMV, of course. I uprated you in any event.

Even if something happens between now and then it wont
change anything as far as my reasons for leaving the party goes.
There is ZERO chance they will be anything but obstructionists to the progressive agenda going forward as they have already clearly illustrated and if by some miracle they do manage to start fielding real progressives and get rid of all the 3rd wayers controlling the party I could always switch back.
I am not loyal to parties, I am loyal to my principles, and those dictate that I not be complicit nor accepting of the things they have done and will do in the future.
The only path I can see going forward does not involve either of the parties.

Not zero chance. 0.0000000000000001% maybe.
Meanwhile, I am collecting signatures to get Jill Stein on the ballot here in Kentucky. I don't have to quit the Dem party to work for a 3rd party at this point. If Bern ends up with the Dem nom, I can always stop working for Jill at that point. It doesn't hurt him for her to be on the ballot.

You aren't going to pressure anybody from inside.
Nor will you pressure anybody from outside.
The objective should not be to "pressure" anybody at all, but rather to seize power from those people.
And that can conceivably be done either from within or without.

Maybe pressure wasn't the right word. Then I want to wait to
see if there is an opportunity to seize power at the convention. Is there any harm in waiting until then before giving up on the party?

I'm declining to be adamant.
Personally, I believe that takeover of the Democratic Party is the best tactic. At the local level, the people running the show are mostly witless hacks who could easily be defeated with any kind of serious social media campaign.
Nonetheless, I decline to harangue, harass or discourage those who believe a 3rd Party, whether they advocate going Green, or something altogether fresh.
My point about "pressure" is simply that we have seen, over and over again from November 2000 onwards, that "these people" cannot be pressured, because they are too committed to their conventional wisdoms. Their response to pressure from progressives is to berate and/or dismiss those progressives, while shifting further to the right. They are not interested in learning the lessons that would be necessary for them to be susceptible to pressure from the left. The only solution is to replace them, one way or another.

Well, the one theory is that if we reduce their membership
numbers enough it will either:
A. cause them to become irrelevant as a political party in the future and therefore they will not hold the current stranglehold on half of the political process and continue shutting out the progressives.
or
B. They see the massive change in numbers and panic realizing they did really screw the pooch trying to triangulate to center constantly and that we won't accept it anymore and then start adopting and supporting progressive policies and candidates.
I find B. to be unlikely as the corporatism embracing dems will not be willing to release the reigns of control that they have on the party.
But of course whatever decision you decide is best is the one you should make. I would never presume to tell you what you should do, just sharing my reasoning for why I made the choice I did.

This has been a good discussion. You give me a lot to think
about. I can always change my mind if it looks like leaving will be effective.
Some good points about local politics too, though. Not much happens around here. I think a few energetic new people could soon become the local Dem party.

That's why I like this place so much, we discuss ideas back and
forth and come up with counter arguments or competing ideas without all the ad-hominems flying around or attempts at conversion or loyalty oaths.
The more we discuss things the better thought out our strategy and plans will be going forward.
It is so refreshing as there are few other such rational oasis's on the net it.
"I used to vote Republican & Democrat, I also used to shit my pants. Eventually I got smart enough to stop doing both things." -Me
No, you don't pressure them from without, either.
I'm writing an essay about it. The summary version is this: the only way to transform the party is to win elections without relying on the party at all. In other words, it looks a lot like just making a go of things with a new party.
Exactly! I am no longer interested in "Fixing" the Democratic
party in the slightest. That has been a struggle for decades, since the LAST Clinton was in office.
All the party has done during the years since despite all efforts to "pull it left" has been to willfully move further and further to the right to the point where they cannot even claim to be Center Left anymore.
I think our efforts are much better served on building a replacement party than trying to shore up the foundation of a party that is already rotten at the core.
The greens can be my new home until we get said party moving or merge fully with the greens, whichever direction the movement takes will be the way I go ultimately, provide that direction is NOT back to begging at the DNC's table for scraps.
I'd sooner starve.
"I used to vote Republican & Democrat, I also used to shit my pants. Eventually I got smart enough to stop doing both things." -Me
I agree.
I'm now a Green and will vote for Jill Stein. But the Greens have been disorganized and chaotic in my experience. I'm hoping enough Bernie people join them and become active so that they actually become a party to be reckoned with. The Greens will be getting a lot of experienced campaign people if it goes on the way it looks like going. I think this strategy is better than staying with an intractable bunch of time serving crooks or starting from scratch.

Just signed up on GP website
I live in WA state, so no official primary registration. I did just sign up for a profile on www.gp.org. It would be great to send a message to the democrats that I'm no longer a player on their team. One more number ticked over to the Greens will have to be message enough. I suppose I could send a divorce decree directly to the dems, but really at this point I think it's more important to build positive energy rather than feeding more into the negative.

Kermit was wrong. It's really easy being Green.
It took me five minutes to change my party affiliation.
I was originally CA NPP (No Party Preference). So it's not actually a DemExit, but it still is a message that I'm not a registered Democrat. I won't make the Democratic roster shrink any, but I can help the Jill Stein's roster grow.
The people, united, will never be defeated.
I just looked up the Nebraska Green Party website and they're
an absolutely acceptable alternative to Sanders. i have no problem at all switching my support from Sanders to Stein. At least my vote will still go for the things I support and believe in, not for the sake of partisan politics.
Bernie tried. He did a great job. But why he's surrendering to the people who blatantly rigged the primary and basically are rubbing our noses in the fact that this is in the bag and there ain't a damn thing we can do about it is anyone's guess. At the first sign of dirty tricks I would have said all bets are off, I can't support this woman who doesn't represent change but rather more of the same old shit (or worse). He ran an honorable primary, her's was pure lies and sleaze. I just cannot reconcile the two.

Yep GP and Stein
on the ballot here in Il. I'm in,I know this is hrc country but we will see come Nov.
Yup. Just did the #DemExit thing,
after 40 years as a registered democrat. I'd been planning on doing it in person at the county courthouse on 7/29, but today's events rendered that moot. No reason to wait, as all of our meaningless caucus shit and equally meaningless primary shit have already been done.
Luckily, in Colorado, you can do it online at the Secretary of State's web site- you don't have to do it in person or spend a stamp.
Unsubscribed from Bernie's mailing list as well, although the HRC campaign probably demanded a safety copy of it prior to today- since they have to know that a sizeable number of people will be leaving it.
It was fun while it lasted, thinking that we voters actually had input on the democratic party's behavior. Won't make that mistake again- I'm now a light shade of Green.
Good idea
I'm unsubbing, too.

Much appreciation for you guys!!!
My first comment here; "justmypiece" at TOP. Just checking to see how it works, but also to state my yuuge disappointment in Bernie this morning. I don't know why green parties or others outside the two give me some hesitation...just not knowing them, they don't have a strong network behind them, etc...ANTS=automatic negative thoughts. Ugh! Cannot and will not every vote Hillary.
Would love to give a shout out for all the hard work people have done in creating this space and kossacks for sanders and LD's TPW. It is so appreciated!

I would DemExit if registration was required here.
Sounds kind of cathartic after all that has happened.
Now, unless a 'Clintexit' happens, it's a question of waiting for Nov. and voting for Jill Stein.
Gëzuar!!
from a reasonably stable genius.
Yeah, it was quite cathartic actually. I feel like I no longer
have the weight on my shoulders of trying to fight against my own team as well as the other side for what I feel is important.
I am actually feeling a bit fired up to get moving on defeating Clinton and building up either the Greens AND a new party.
Lets get a coalition of two left wing parties to counterbalance the two right wing ones we currently have.

I just changed my registration
to Green online.
My Demexit day was today and it felt good.
Fuck the DNC and their corporate leadership.
I didn't see the GP as an option on the AZ form online
Did you just choose OTHER? Something about that choice makes me a bit nervous. When we moved here 17 years ago i registered INDEPENDENT and the amount of seriously demented ultra RW mailings and calls led me to change to D. I want my registration to clearly say GREEN. Is that possible?
I went on
ServiceArizona.com and re-registered changing to Green Party. There was a drop down box for party and it listed "green" along with Dem, Repub and Independent.
Aha! Much better than the dl form. Will go there. Thx. NT
Senate race?
Isn't there a Grayson/Murphy statewide primary race?
Got my post card last week
stating that I had indeed been registered as a Democrat for these past ten years at the same fucking address.
All along I had been... except this election me and my husband's registration records had literally been wiped clean. Even though the DMV motor voter was done in Nov and I had checked during a Sander's rally in April.
I wasn't on record as being registered as a Democrat.
Then I get a postcard stating that I am a Democrat.
Election Office and Secretary of State will hear that I am not a FUCKING DEMOCRAT anymore.
Fraud. Fuck the dems. Fuck Hillary and fuck anyone who thinks I will ever vote for one of these corrupt pieces of scum.
We weren't outnumbered. We weren't outorganized. We were fucked. And like always, the American People will put up with it because they just can't be bothered. Hell, my country did nothing after several children were gunned down in their school.
People are going to die in many ways. Poverty. Starvation. Lack of health care. Lack of Mental Healthcare. Lack of clean water. Lack of proper shelter. Wars. Bigotry. Brutality. Ignorance. Fear. All these ways to die, America. Cause killing and watching people die is what we do best. It's all we have the stomach for because no one gave a shit about just the basic right to vote.
We all pretended there was even an "election" to endorse/concede/join.
Who fucking cares anymore. Rapepublican - Democrat. It's all one big damn game for the 1% and their little stormtroopers.
Buckle up kids. It's only going to get worse. Then maybe we can wake the hell up. Sadly with Americans, it will have to wait until after prime time tv or the latest non-scandal to end.
I'm not a Democrat. They made sure of that.

I just received my Green Party membership form
I'll be filling it out and sending it in ASAP. I'm a resident of Hawaii and there is no way to change your party affiliation online. The Green Party to me to cancel my affiliation with the Democratic Party I will need to send them an email notifying them of my intentions. Lucky me!! Not only do I get to leave the Democrats, I get the opportunity to tell them why!! I don't think they're going to like what I have to say!!
“Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we.”

Just made it official!
Sent that email to the Democratic party informing them I am leaving the Democratic party and will be switching to the Green Party. Also let them know that any party that would nominate Hillary Clinton is not a party that represents my interests and that I will never, ever cast a vote for her. Adios Dems!! See you in hell!
On the bright side, the Green Party wanted me to mail in my membership form and I asked them if I could scan it and email it. Also asked if I could pay my $10 annual dues(which I'm more than happy to pay) via PayPal or credit card. They wrote me back and said I could pay my dues anytime, the important part was my membership and told me to email it back!! I'm no longer a fucking Democrat!! Yahoo!!!

I forgot!
Mrs. R also switched to the Green Party today! I won't be surprised if Clinton loses in Hawaii. Hawaii went for Bernie 70-30. I don't think Hawaii progressives will hold their noses and vote for Clinton, not with the Green Party on the ballot!

I left after California.
I left after California.
The idea that we could "pressure" or "influence" those Democrats who have strong party loyalties and support Hillary was nonsensical IMO. Those people never saw us as "real Democrats", ever; our opposition to Hillary's coronation was the only excuse they ever needed to dismiss us. Even now we can see how the party treats Sanders' delegates and their proposals.
The only bit of leverage Sanders ever had over them, THE ONLY BIT - which he's thrown away by now - was to threaten to run third party and spoil the crap out of them. Likewise, the only leverage we have over the Democratic Party is to leave the Party and vote for someone else in November, and force them to earn our vote back if they want it... which they don't, because they're laboring under the delusion that they can win without us and preparing to nominate someone we've told them over and over again we won't vote for.
In any case, it does no good to wait until AFTER they've cut most of Bernie's planks out of the Democratic Party platform and officially nominated Hillary to leave. What are they supposed to do at that point - shrug remorsefully? The public opinion part of the primary is over. All the votes are in, except the ones in Philly. It's time for us, the American public, to pivot to the general, where it doesn't matter what party you're in. Let the Democratic Party see what they're losing, I say. It won't change their course, but perhaps they'll sleep worse.
