The Evening Blues - 7-4-16
Hey! Good Evening!
This evening's music features music for the 4th of July holiday. Enjoy!
Simon & Garfunkel - America
"Democracy"
It's coming through a hole in the air,
from those nights in Tiananmen Square.
It's coming from the feel
that this ain't exactly real,
or it's real, but it ain't exactly there.
From the wars against disorder,
from the sirens night and day,
from the fires of the homeless,
from the ashes of the gay:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.
It's coming through a crack in the wall;
on a visionary flood of alcohol;
from the staggering account
of the Sermon on the Mount
which I don't pretend to understand at all.
It's coming from the silence
on the dock of the bay,
from the brave, the bold, the battered
heart of Chevrolet:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.It's coming from the sorrow in the street,
the holy places where the races meet;
from the homicidal bitchin'
that goes down in every kitchen
to determine who will serve and who will eat.
From the wells of disappointment
where the women kneel to pray
for the grace of God in the desert here
and the desert far away:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.Sail on, sail on
O mighty Ship of State!
To the Shores of Need
Past the Reefs of Greed
Through the Squalls of Hate
Sail on, sail on, sail on, sail on.It's coming to America first,
the cradle of the best and of the worst.
It's here they got the range
and the machinery for change
and it's here they got the spiritual thirst.
It's here the family's broken
and it's here the lonely say
that the heart has got to open
in a fundamental way:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.It's coming from the women and the men.
O baby, we'll be making love again.
We'll be going down so deep
the river's going to weep,
and the mountain's going to shout Amen!
It's coming like the tidal flood
beneath the lunar sway,
imperial, mysterious,
in amorous array:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.Sail on, sail on ...
I'm sentimental, if you know what I mean
I love the country but I can't stand the scene.
And I'm neither left or right
I'm just staying home tonight,
getting lost in that hopeless little screen.
But I'm stubborn as those garbage bags
that Time cannot decay,
I'm junk but I'm still holding up
this little wild bouquet:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.-- Leonard Cohen

Evening Joe
A young Leonard Cohen with a very political introduction to my favorite song of his. Enjoy.
I want a Pony!
evening arrow...
great tune! i guess leonard cohen is one of a long line of songwriters who have been screwed by their representation. i'm surprised that there aren't more songs about lawyers and managers.
War!
What is it good for?
"They'll say we're disturbing the peace, but there is no peace. What really bothers them is that we are disturbing the war." Howard Zinn
evening mm...
absolutely nothin', say it again...
one of my favorite tunes back in the day, thanks!
Thanks, joe!
Super duper excellent musical selections, joe!
(Can anyone listen to Simon and Garfunkel's America without thinking of Bernie?)
Happy Independence Day joe and all!
evening olinda...
thanks! i hope that you're having a great holiday weekend, too.
Leonard Cohen is a damn fine poet.
Right up there with Dylan. Two Jew-boys. Meant in the kindest way possible, I married another.
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
"the shadow of bridges
"the shadow of bridges
on the ice
of the North Saskatchewan River,
the cold blue hospital
of the sky,
it all keeps us
such sweet company..."
Leonard Cohen (as I remember)
evening riverlover...
i've always been surprised that he never became a household name. i mean, in a world where justin bieber can be a megastar, somebody with actual talent...
In a world.....
.... Often doesn't have a chance in hell of getting the airplay they deserve.
Politics are in the same rabbit-hole boat right now. Donald J. Trump, El Chumpo, is this Presidential election's megastar, while Bernie Sanders gets thrown under the bus in favor of Her Most Imperial Heinous.
We live in interesting times -- in the Chinese usage of that term!
"US govt/military = bad. Russian govt/military = bad. Any politician wanting power = bad. Anyone wielding power = bad." --Shahryar
"All power corrupts absolutely!" -- thanatokephaloides
Thanks, Joe, fabulous. Being me, of course, I can't resist a
little paean to America's "Great Road" --
That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --
evening el...
heh, a great road to write about...
You touched the nerve with Cohen's poem -
what can I say? He sang it in 2008, I think he was hoping Democracy is coming to the USA for real back then...
Makes me cry to listen to him again ... in an unsentimental way. Where is that damn Democracy? I remember well how that song had an impact on me back then. He is such a great poet and singer / musician / man.
It's time to get to the real revolution. It's not bearable anymore.

evening mimi...
many of us have been waiting for democracy to come to the usa - and even the little bit that appears to have arrived lately is too much for the people that run the place.
Happy 4th of July!
Happy 4th of July everyone!
Beat me to the US Blues~

evening lookout...
have a great 4th!
Greetings Joe & Blusters! RL is pretty
hectic, lately. Got tapped to oversee an organizational Twitter account, which is a little intimidating since we're so far left of most of the membership. This should be both interesting and challenging.
(Mr M wanted me to take a pass on it; so, we'll see.)
And the other day, I decided to set up an extra personal Twitter account (one in which I won't follow any accounts, just send out Tweets) in order to lay out 'the Grifters' policies, etc.
I decided to do this after we heard a former (South Dakota) Republican Senator Larry Pressler, during an XM Radio interview, say that he had recently endorsed FSC (in The Hill) because she has put forward a plan to balance the budget--just like her husband did.
This is news to me--obviously I'll have to start paying closer attention to the 'BS' that she presents on the campaign trail, and on her website.
BTW, we knew who Pressler was, but we didn't know until the interview that he authored the Telecommunications Act of 1996.
From his Wiki entry,
Oh, and I love this one,
For the most part, he sounds like another John Kasich!
It's beginning to appear (to me) that FSC's Campaign is preparing to throw Bernie's supporters (and Stein's) under the bus--big time. I mean, 'in your face.'
Hey, thanks for tonight's EB, Joe.
Hope you and yours--and all Bluesters--have a nice and safe Fourth!

evening mollie...
thanks for the reminder about larry pressler.
i think that we're about to see clinton go hard right in order to cut as much of the republican base as she can out from under trump. it wouldn't surprise me to see her pick a rethug as a running mate.
Happy Yankee Day!
Last week, I got an American car. Have been driving those foreign jobs most of my life, but I had been looking for something cheap with low mileage and in good condition and decided I would take whatever model was available that met those specs.
Those original Saturn 'S' models really fit the bill. They have aged well in Northern California. Mine is a 1997, has a five speed and roll-up windows. They wanted just $1 a lb. for it! I just had to have it. It only has 98,000 miles -- just half of its life is used up. Of course, I'm sure one could get 20 year-old Lincolns and Cadillacs for just 50 cents a pound, but I bet the maintenance and fuel bills on those things is killer.
1997 Saturn SL1 as shown in the Craigslist ad.
While i was detailing it. I polished and waxed it, and this is after I put silicon grease on all the rubber parts.

The interior is stark, but the condition is perfect. So far, I'm getting 38.6 mpg.

Too bad GM killed Saturn. This is an essay dealing with the golden age of Saturn before 9/11. Everything changed after 9/11, even Saturn.
evening crider...
many happy miles! i have a friend that bought a similar saturn new and is still quite happy with it many years later, it seems to be a very durable car.
Hey, Crider--nice wax and detail job. Have a friend
who had a Saturn for a number of years (can't remember the exact model, though), and he got excellent mileage, just as you cited. Hope it serves you well.
Have a great Fourth!

I liked those cars, but have never bought American
And my mother worked for Delco-Remy for some time. But after the Ford Country Squire wagon I remember as a wee one, my father (sole driver then) bought only German and later Swedish. I have owned one German and 4 Japanese. Cars.

and after having had an old Honda, old Mitsubishi and old VW
and being always amused how much money some Americans are willing to spend for a Mercedes, BMW and Audi (all of the three I never would buy myself, even if I could afford to do so), I now would just buy American cars, We got a Ford pick-up truck and after my current Kia will fall apart I will just buy another Ford transit. I still look for an affordable camping van that can pull a trailer to do my move from east coast to west coast .. At least I know I can get a Ford repaired easily in the most remote areas.
Oh, I would also buy the tiny FIAT... from Italy with love. But my ideal would be an electric golf cart with some little extra side dishes.

Hey, Joe! All our war makes me angry.
After reading about the bodies trailing behind the Clinton monsters, there are but a handful of songs that come to mind. My apologies.
After reading Ed's emailgate essays especially:
Trigger warning here. I shall never, ever forget the footage of the dead (?) child whose body relieved itself at the end. NEVER!

Bette's video is not posting. 3rd try coming. Screw it; will go with the original Nancy's.

And because this might be my favorite song of all time because I danced to it in a somewhat unconventional way; PLUS I love the name Butthole Surfers, AND Ponch from C.H.I.P.S is in the video :

I have a four-legged hemorrhoid named Annie every bomb sounding holiday and hunting season. Thanks Obama lol.
Thank you Joe!
