Photography Open Thread 06/24/2016
This post is a fairly brief one. I had a lot on this week and the whole Brexit train wreck thing has taken up most of my focus since yesterday. The subject is shooting into the light.
This weeks assignment - Photographing into the light.
Please post any photos, comment about anything or ask any questions about photography.- Also, treat this as a photography (or anything else for that matter) open thread.
Into the Light
When I was handed the family camera back in the late sixties I was given a set of instructions that were never to be deviated from. One of these instructions was wait until the sun comes out and always shoot with it sun behind you. The reasoning was understandable. Film was nowhere near as sensitive to light as today's sensors so more light was required. Also apertures in non professional cameras were usually single size and fairly small (for a large depth of field and simpler lens manufacture). In other words front lighting was considered optimal because it made the scene brighter. Fortunately things have moved on and even cheap cameras are now becoming capable of producing good images in low light conditions.
Lets take a brief look at what happens when back lighting as opposed to front lighting is used:
The results become much less predictable. This can be a good thing or a bad thing depending upon who you ask. Many photographers want predictable repeatable results while others enjoy working with some random elements.
Lens flare is something that often happens when shooting into a light source. Many hate it with a passion while others like it so much that they add it artificially in post production. The real version is caused by light bouncing around inside the lens before hitting the sensor. Manufacturers tend to try to do what they can to stop lens flare - usually by means of special coatings on the glass. This technology does not come cheap though. I enjoy working with the quirks of my lenses and will often deliberately choose to work with ones that are prone to flare just to see what they make of a scene.
The primary function of lens hoods is to control lens flare. In the absence of a hood shielding with a free hand can work just as well. Flare is more of an issue with wideangle lenses than it is with telephoto ones because the former take in much more of a scene and are therefore much more likely to have a source of light either in the actual frame or very close.
Bokeh Blobs As far as I understand it bokeh is a term used to describe the out of focus area of an image. Throwing light sources out of focus turns them into larger blobs. Some people like this effect and others not so much. I'm agnostic - its good now and again but it is easy to overdo it. A larger aperture will generally produce bigger blobs. These blogs vary in shape depending upon the aperture mechanism - polygons and circles are the most common.
Silhouettes If an object is backlit against say, the sky, it is always much darker than the sky. This is why foreground objects usually appear black when photographed against a sunset. If the sun is behind the object (or person) the edges of the silhouette will often have a halo.
Obviously there is much more to backlighting than this and I've barely even scratched the surface here.
Assignments
Last Weeks Assignment - Boring
This Weeks Assignment - Into the light
The main light source should be more than 90 degrees from the camera. (90 degrees is side lighting).
Pointing the camera in the direction of the sun is an obvious example. There are many other possibilities though. Artificial lights are ideal. Town centers at dusk are good. Candle light also offers up interesting possibilities. Quick tip here though, make sure that the exposure on the camera is set to spot metering and that the reading is taken from the flame.Where to Post Images
I'll put up a new thread tomorrow, around noon ET, specifically for the uploading of photos relating to the assignment. If you want to post them here and/or on tomorrow's thread that is fine. Also feel free to post any other images of anything on either today's or tomorrow's threads. The assignments are purely optional.
Embrace light. Admire it. Love it. But above all, know light. Know it for all you are worth, and you will know the key to photography.

This is an open thread so have at it. Post photos, questions, thoughts etc. - anything whatsoever to do with photography or anything at all for that matter.

Back later
I have to go out for a few hours now - will check back in when I get back.

Hi UL

I, of course, did not take either one of these.
I just thought they were incredible and couldn't wait to share them with you guys.

Pretty narked about the 'Brexit' result.
Anyway...

One more
Because I really am narked about David Cameron's idiotic exercise.

Hi Bolox ref
Am very bummed about results - massively complex issues. Cameron as an absolute jerk. He promised the vote to pull some of the racist UKIP vote during the General Election which is cynical and stupid enough but he could have set the bar higher, say 66/33 rather than 50+1/50-1 He will now go down as the worst British PM in modern history (especially if the Scots rerun their UK in/out referendum which they are now entitled to do)
All too depressing for words
Really like the pics btw

Agreed.
You know what really cheeses me off is.......... I like being part of a Union of English, Scots, Welsh and N. Irish, because we all have family that includes the same.
And yet it's going to explode because of ............. some stupid Cameron election ploy.

Me too
and for all its faults it was the EU that provided a lot of environmental/social justice legislation that wouldn't have happened otherwise. I think that the Brit oligarchy would have gone in the same direction as the US version without the checks and balances the EU provides.

evening steve...
here's a long exposure into the light taken in grand teton national park:
Hi Joe
beautiful light - and perfectly exposed. I am going to have to dust off the tripod one day and start doing the one second plus thing. This makes me want to jump in the car and drive out west.
Presume this was shot around dusk?

howdy steve...
yes, this was shot after the sun went behind the mountain range behind me, but while there was still some light other than the moonlight.
i heartily endorse jumping in the car and driving out west. i'm back home now and i'd love to get back in the car and retrace my steps.

Operational question, Knucklehead.
Is there a UV light above your reef tanks? So many creatures show other colors under UV. Too bad our eyes can't see much out there.

Stunningly beautiful work as always
I am a sucker for the post processed lensflare - probably due to watching to much science fiction- no show was complete without the sun emerging from behind a spaceship/spacestation/planet/moon and causing flares

Funny you should ask. Just today (yesterday now!) I was trying
to get a pic of Oreo playing. He likes me to lift him up so he "flies through the air". Trying to get this on video, though, the light interfered with a clear picture of his expressions. When I reviewed it, I also hadn't centered the camera very well, and didn't pursue it further because he was too dark.
I didn't realize how much of his face I could restore by running it through my software!
Still, some day I'll film this in a room not flooded with sunlight. And maybe use the sunlight to get a nice silhouette, something like this (I didn't take this one):

Love the third one
great silhouette. It is hard to get detail when the light is behind the subject so expressions are tough.
cool cat.

Yes, I think for detail I would not try again with a bright
window behind. As you make the subject lighter, it gets very glary. But for silhouettes, it's quite awesome. I was looking online for examples, was surprised to find very few, so the genre could use more. Lots of cardboard cutout silhouettes, ugh, rather than actual photos.

Moonset
I had to underexpose the mountain in order to not wash out the moon, then turn up the red later to get it to look like it did to the naked eye. As good as modern cameras are nothing beats our native visual system.
True that -
(reply for Wilderness Voice)
biggest problem is that the dynamic range visible to the human eye massively outstrips that of even the best sensors. Makes it impossible to expose correctly for sky and land as the values are just too far apart.
HDR used well is a good workaround (not the nasty oversharpening type though) I do this if I'm photographing a room but also need the view out of a window to be correctly exposed. A down and dirty answer that works OK in some cases is a gradient.
Cool photo and I really like the idea of bumping up the red - works well.
