Photography Open Thread 06/17/2016
This post marks a return to one of my favorite themes - that just about anything can be the subject of an interesting photograph.
This weeks assignment is: Boring (yup you read that right).
Please post any photos, comment about anything or ask any questions about photography.- Also, treat this as a photography (or anything else for that matter) open thread.
An Unusual Landscape
When we think about landscape photography we tend to think of the grand vistas typified by the photography of Ansel Adams and the legions of photographers who have followed in his footsteps. Big beautiful mountains, rolling fields, forests, picturesque buildings are all a part of the landscape tradition.
This approach involves finding a view that makes for an interesting composition and then either waiting or returning when the light is at its most flattering (almost always around dusk or dawn - usually the former because there are less people and traffic). If the clouds are doing something interesting that is a real bonus. I have done my share of this type of photography and have great affection for it. Nothing beats being in the middle of a beautiful nowhere at 5.00AM, with no other person in sight, on a warm summer’s morning, with a tripod a camera bag and an hour or so. Best therapy there is.
We learn by trying different things though. These photographs are of what is little more than a wasteland alongside one of the many railway tracks that run through our county. Passenger trains, trains for the mills, and even the notorious bomb trains all have their own lines that go through here. This patch of land borders the latter.
I wanted to see what I could learn by taking photographs of subject matter that was generally considered ugly but in light that was generally considered appealing. I had read loads of stuff about the importance of good light but knew that I could not really understand the subject without trying this experiment. This was my way of attempting to determine the relative importance of light vs subject matter in an image.
Some people think these images are pretty awful and others really like them. I am happy either way - they did what I needed them to do. For what it’s worth I like them but that is because I learned something through them and not because I feel that I must rush out to buy frames to put them in an exhibition.
As some of you know, in addition to taking photographs I paint and make collages. I used these and others from the same set on a series of such works. So, if these look familiar that may be why.
Assignments
Last Week's Assignment - Textures
This Weeks Assignment - Boring
This may be a bit tougher than some of the previous ones. The idea is to make an interesting photograph out of what many would consider to be a boring, or at least average subject.
An image search for photographs by Edward Weston could provide a good jumping off point - he had an incredible eye and could find the photograph in just about anything.
Also think in terms of light. It is worth going outside just before sunrise and looking around - in this light just about anything looks good. Try a close up shot of a fire hydrant in this light if you are skeptical.
For an altogether different approach take a photo of something mundane then see what you can do in the editing process to make it interesting (this one is a bit tougher imo).Where to post images
I'll put up a new thread tomorrow, around noon ET, specifically for the uploading of photos relating to the assignment. If you want to post them here and/or on tomorrow's thread that is fine. Also feel free to post any other images of anything on either today's or tomorrow's threads. The assignments are purely optional.
Here is an apt quote for this weeks theme:
There are painters who transform the sun to a yellow spot, but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence, transform a yellow spot into sun-Picasso
This is an open thread so have at it. Post photos, questions, thoughts etc. - anything whatsoever to do with photography or anything at all for that matter.

Hi Steve
The first shot is a drinking glass turned upside down and a pen light shining down from above. The swirling pattern is from the light reflecting through the class. The color was changed from white to purple in post. The last four shots are all long exposure using two black lights for lighting. The spoons are sitting on a black surface. In the last three shots the items are sitting on a mirror with a black background placed behind it.

Ah cool
my guesses were about 50% correct and 50% completely wrong. I guessed the black backdrops but thought that the base was black with a sheet of glass as opposed to a mirror.
I am definitely going to experiment with a UV light - never even thought about using one of those before.
Thanks!

Two years ago
my wife stopped me from shoveling (about 120ft of sidewalk and a small drive - hardest part was where the city shoved all the ice off the street into our drive -too heavy for a blower). Used to take me about 2 hours after a fall of around a foot. Life is much easier now.

Yes. That 3' of frozen slush/snow (snush?)
is deadly. I try to wait for my plow guy to clear it up before exiting. There is always another day (I stock well in winter).

Sore
Still very sore and stiff. The mental confusion has lifted and I can remember all but the seizure itself. I can tell everything is going to be okay since Pixie has been staying in my room today. She was extremely upset by what happened.

Okay
This is boring. I know, because we were stuck here for seven hours waiting for an Amtrak train.
The 'station' still had the original Victorian fittings in the 'restroom'.

Trains
I took my first train ride since I was a little child when I brought my brother out from California to North Carolina. As I was also doing a bit of PR for a British charity I set up a section on my website with pictures of the trip. I'm hoping to take the train again if Reid and I get the medical issues worked out so we can travel.

But I forgot to check the settings on my camera. I was shooting in M mode with a fixed ISO 400...just a few shots were usable.

There were actually two
One tried to sneak past me from the front, that's the one I got a picture of. The other tried to sneak up behind me. When I turned he spooked and scared the hell out of me...
I spooked about a dozen frogs, so I can't imagine why the minks would be there

Beautiful photos as always
Really like this set a lot.
Did something similar about a week ago - was using a 50mm f1.8 lens on a different make camera with an adapter. I haven't shot manual for about a month and completely forgot to focus. I was using a viewscreen(mirrorless) and was checking for composition/framing but neglected to check the focus peak graphic duh! 80 files of out of focus garbage. Odd thing is that I used to use manual as opposed to auto by choice up until very recently.

Looks like a wonderful place to take a walk and lovely photos too - haven't seen a mink since I left Michigan many years ago. Is that a Yellow Warbler?

So is stevenj both of your photos always blow my mind. First time here. I finally worked up the courage to join in on this great series. I'm a lapsed painter drawer artist and have always been in awe of the artists who work with a camera. So I'm taking the leap, dusting off my Cannon whatever and joining in here. This for me is the best part of cc99% the creative part It's not onfined to a separate space but is the heart and soul of what keeps me coming back. Thank you stevenj. I'm going to spend some time next week reviewing and catching up to the current photography OT. I can do it. I'm pretty good at painting and all that jazz but clutch up badly when using a camera. Thanks all. Will be back and try my hand and eye at this art form.
We have a lot in common
I came to photography through the other visual arts. Even had a solo show of my paintings in London in a previous life. One thing that interests me is the differences in the work of those who came into photography directly and those who came via the other visual arts. The difference isn't a qualitative one but there is a difference.
I think that a background in 2D composition is invaluable as it is much easier to frame photographs when this is instinctive. OTO those who come straight into photography often bring a spontaneity that the more formally trained artist often lacks. The best photography combines these I suspect.
I am really happy too see you here - honestly! - I really enjoy your art based open threads even though I've not commented often. Under some deadline pressure at the moment so thoughtful comments from me are rare.
Agree with everything you say re c99 about both c99% and Knucklehead's art (which blows me away). Als oown a Canon whatever along with a couple of Nikon whatever's and a Samsung mirrorless whatever. I promise that you won't find much, if any, gear related stuff in my posts.

Your images
and compositions are always stunning, captivating, K. I do also like the simplicity of Decker Canyon's snaky road vs. the chaparral, contrasted against the sea. Egads, that was a make-out road ages ago in high school, ha ha.

Hey Steve! Boring things that I really like
My bottle collection. They are yoghurt jars - I sent away for the caps. Great for use in painting.
This is an example of a good late, picture taken because the day before I was served one, tall but only half-full with a grey cloud floating on top of it. Boring I know but I like a good latté'

Hi Joe
This has a wonderful sense of depth. I am fascinated by the various Technicolor processes and this is as good a digital simulation of any of them as I've seen anywhere.
What software/settings did you use if you don't mind me asking?
“To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize.” -Voltaire
morning steve...
i use acdsee pro ultimate 9 (a lot like lightroom, only without adobe's high cost and long learning curve) for my basic workflow and processing. the two strip process (along with scads of other cool stuff) is in an older version of tiffen's dfx (i think version 2) that i have on my travelling laptop. the tiffen software is pretty cool; it has an electronic version of every filter that tiffen makes and lots of gels, grads and other goodies tossed in. you can get it as a plug in for photoshop (more expensive that way) or as a standalone system.
shows how little I know
- didn't even realize that Tiffen made software.
I have to defend Lightroom a bit here - it is very different from Photoshop and pretty intuitive (I think). Of course Photoshop is the complete opposite. I did try ON1 for a while but ended up back with Lightroom. Most of the non-linear editing/cataloging seem to encourage similar workflows imo.
I tend to use Photoshop mainly as a supporting program for various plugins so may well give the Tiffen filters a try.
