I can't explain this to my son (Update)

About to take my adult son over to get tested for "Drugs." It's part of a on the job training program he was accepted into for people with severe neurological disabilities. He only takes gummy vitamin D and marijuana tincture that helps his anxieties due to autism.

He will not be able to partake in this great OJT opportunity. He was to be their "star intern". But we are going along and will do the pee test today. Oh, did I mention how my son has issues with public bathrooms and urinating on demand?... So today he is all wigged out. Because the law says he must get drug tested in order to learn how to stock supply carts in a hospital setting. We know the end result will be a big, fat NO. But we are going through it anyways because we are trying to fight "The Stupid". But it's the law...

The laws says.

The LAW says that my medical marijuana dispensary can only sell low dose edibles - like 15mgs in a sea salt caramel. We can only sell you ONE a day. Which is extremely silly because it's such a small amount when compared to the amount in flower that we can sell up to 7 grams to recreational users. Meaning people without a medical marijuana card. It's the law.

One sea salt caramel per day.

Wesley is having a set back on getting his OMMP card because of red tape. It's been weeks since the state and the county have handed over to OHSA his diagnostics.

But you can only buy ONE sea salt caramel per day.

Wesley can't get a driver's license due to his disability.

One CBD taffy nugget per day.

But the laws says Wesley, today, could walk over to Wal Mart and buy a fucking gun. Two, even.

Got that America?

Does it make any damn sense?

EDIT: adding photos

When he was accepted as #1 intern. Pride. Dignity. Confidence.

Update
From Wesley:
He read every single comment in here and he was relieved that while reading them he "kinda quit shaking." "So that is a good thing."

He also said that he doesn't like the photo taken today and it was kinda embarrassed by it because it's not a good picture of him and I offered to remove it but he sees how it's "big time difference in how I feel." So it's okay to leave it up. For now. That might change.

The Foundation (not being named because they are still trying to do good and still hoping something happens) said there is another OJT program but it's 2 hrs away and it's at a hotel that doesn't require testing and that this has made many people mad and they are on the look out for new jobs, interviews and opportunities for Wesley and young people like him.

And he said... it's "been a bad week, the Sharks lost to the Penguins, a horrible shooting that killed a lot of people. Mr. Hockey and Mr. Ali died. It's been sad. Today was just a day."

And... "tell them I'm okay. I'm a good person."

At that low dose, it probably has less of an effect than Ritalin. And half the kids in the country are on that. But Big Pharma gets a piece of the action, so it's all good.

MJ laws all started out as punishment/control of the hippies and anti-war activists (60s/70s). Then I guess they figured out it was a perfect way to keep the Prison Industrial Complex beds to full capacity. So here we are with it still classified the same as Heroin.

Thank the aholes in congress, both parties.

I hope they give Wesley the job and he does become the "star intern".

were mainly aimed at blacks since cannabis use was common in the jazz community back in the day. What better way to bust folks you don't like? Reefer Madness came out in 1936. There should be no reason to treat cannabis or even other drug use as a criminal issue -- if someone has problems with abuse, get them into treatment just like for alcohol. But if someone likes to light up once in a while, or they use a cream or tincture or munch on a brownie, no BFD, just like someone having a beer or two at the ball game or backyard barbecue.

Both groups were used as scapegoats back when Harry Anslinger and Hearst et. al went after cannabis initially, but there true motive was profit related.

I am currently working on a book on this subject (Tenatively titled "Demonized: The real history of Cannabis and it's prohibition.") but could probably throw together a mid-length essay on here about it.

I was going to do so at GOS, but I haven't been back there in I don't even know how long and certainly have no intention currently to go there at all either unless it is to gloat or mock them Smile

hemp ropes, paper and cloth as opposed to Hearst's holdings in timber. (That is of course what is often dismissed as "Conspiracy Theory", but the profits are too great to be anything but organized crime perpetrated by government, IMHO)

Alphalop's picture

Hearst had massive lumber interests and also owned many newspapers.

Hemp paper was poised to surpass Tree Pulp paper because it was both more durable to use and cheaper, but it could also be cheaply recycled and used again without requiring large amounts of dangerous and expensive chemicals.

Which brings us to Du Pont, who had a massive investment in the petrochemical biz had a vested interest in keeping it illegal because not only could Hemp Seed oil be used to make plastics, as well as paints and varnishes amongst many other products instead of petroleum. Hemp paper didn't require the chemicals used, which he manufactured and sold, that is needed to make tree pulp based paper.

Which brings us all the way back to rope, Hemp rope was vastly superior to nylon rope, particularly for use in marine environments, than Nylon, which he had just invented and was making a sizable investment in.

Same with Dacron, a far inferior artificial fabric to the popular Hemp fabric, which was used to make everything from Sail Cloth to Levi's. (hence the legend of Levi's famous durability).

It is a long tangled web, but as you unravel it at the center sits a handful of really rich assholes.

Kinda like now.

As a matter of fact, Rudolph Diesel assumed when he invented his engine that it would be powered off of Vegetable and Seed oils, not petroleum!

Wes does very well with logic. Usually. This is so illogical it's not explainable. It's just wrong.

We have people on this site demanding they have gun rights to buy as many guns as they can because that's "freedom" and "fair".... what my son is going through just to get on the job training while being denied a medical card.... is just insane.

Thank you. He is not ready to read the comments just yet. We went and got F-Zero-X game cartridge used at a game store and he's checking it out. But he will be reading the comments. He used to do that in GOS.

I cried as I read your accounting, because frustration is still strong in my very being. Getting trapped in a bureaucratic labyrinth of "logic" is a special kind of hell. I was so happy to have discovered the likes of Harlan Ellison, and Ken Kesey at just the right moment. Being able to externalize my thoughts, and anxieties was so refreshing, and therapeutic.

Frustrated... that's the word of the day. He tried so hard to be brave. But there is no running water in the "bathroom" they provide so as not to water down the UA. He was so embarrassed. And it was a pretty woman who had to take him to the bath stall, too. He was just mortified.

His face started to crack with tears at the very end. While he awaited the documentation that he had been there.

Thank you, he will come in later and read the comments as I asked if I could write this first. I never write about either kid without their permission.

I am so sorry you and your son are having to go through this! Fucking government really is backwards, isn't it? Like you said in another comment yesterday, I can walk into Walmart right now and buy any goddamned gun I want, but GOD FORBID anybody have more than one CBD seal salt caramel per day.

That is really pathetic, especially because you don't get stoned on CBD shit. I know this from experience. I'm now wondering if Colorado has the same laws Washington does? Because I'm pretty sure you can buy more than one edible at a time in Colorado, or at least you could. I've done it myself, but I know they've tightened up the edible stuff since I left. (Something about doses in the candy that weren't always consistent, and then some dude jumped from a building because he took too much of it, supposedly. I'm not sure I believe that -- I think he was on something else.)

If weed is legal in your state, you shouldn't be tested for marijuana. This should be a no-brainer but, lo, it is not. I hear the federal government is thinking of taking cannabis off the bad drug list with the DEA, which is excellent news. I don't know if it's true or just a rumor, but rumblings are better than nothin'.

Much love and many hugs to you, Janet. Hang tough and know that we're here for you! Smile

that the frustrations involved are both tiresome and ludicrous so I sympathize with you.

Right now I am dealing with the fact that I have given 2 choices. I can either:

A: Have a lower quality of life and stay off all medications but cannabis, which has lead to my current situation of having to temporarily suspend my business because I cannot rely on being able to either move or have slept the night before because of pain, and I just couldn't stand being unreliable to my clients and having to pass them to others was doing them a disservice.

or

B: go back to taking 14 different pharmacuticals a day, including Oxy every 4-6 hours and Dilauded every 10-12 hours as well as a wide variety of anti-spasmatics, anti-seizure meds, etc. etc. etc.

Because option C: Continue to use medical cannabis and have something stronger but still more mild than the other stuff on hand for those 3 or 4 times a week where I might really need them is not in the cards for now.

C was not a problem when I lived in a legal state, but life brings changes and I had to move.

I think we can all agree (well except for asshat's like those mentioned here) that the current system is broken in this area as well.

It's just so damn frustrating. I have a fishing boat, live in Florida and yet never take it out lately because I am afraid I will get out there and end up in a ball unable to move. (It happened once, but I was fortunately able to drop anchor and was in a shady area at least, but it sucked and was quite dangerous trying to get home in the dark when I could finally move in a Jonboat with no lights...)

MJ is one of Obama's biggest failures. Not only did he not lift a finger to end the war on pot users. And I'm happy we passed "Recreational". For the simple matter that it makes access to those who need it for medical purposes easier. Yes, the edibles and medical stupidity is insane. As is the laws regarding drinkables. (Apparently the BATF still rules the roost when it comes to anything with alcohol in it, even if it's not the main psychoactive/medical ingredient)

For those of us who CAN smoke for our needs, the law's annoying, but dealable. I feel very sorry for those who have to jump through the hoops for other methods.

Play a little defense! The Sharks left your goaltender high and dry most the series. I think your goaltender actually outplayed ours! Its just our defense was all over it from blocked shots (look at that stat, I was amazed) and getting the puck out of the D zone quick.

Christmas - Pseudo Religious Day celebrating someone's birthday form one religion not he wrong day. Stampedes at Big Box Stores. Presents Galore - Parties - CHA CHING

Honorable Mentions: St. Patricks Day, Cinco de Mayo

These are our 'cultural days'. More than a little sad and pathetic, but hey, it's great corporate culture as long as the peons spend enough to break the new projections for profits!! YEAH!

My husband, while in Ireland, had to explain why the stores are always open, even on holidays or despite holidays. They asked about Thanksgiving and how now Thanksgiving is fucked due to people having to work Black Fridays at 4 pm on Tday.

It's all about the greeeeeed here.

He's my hero. Always has been. The hockey community has always been there for him and our hockey friends are our family. He can still volunteer with the local hockey program. Smile

It was just a really rough day for him - we get them from time to time.

PS I've been overwhelmed by your incredible comments everywhere here. I just agree with so much of your writing. Your words carry so much passion. Thank you for posting here. And thank you for your kind words about me and my son. He is a champ.

Is there no ADA ruling that applies?

If so...Another bill that needs to get updated.

Sorry for this.
I supervise student teachers in elementary classes for children w/ Autism for the University of AZ. I started in Special Education in the early 70's. I've seen a lot of improvements, but new challenges will always occur as rules and regs catch up with technology and research.

death by a thousand cuts.

We can't even get a waiver for testing into community college due to cuts in ADA. He can't get credit for classes unless he passes an entrance exam - but he tests horribly and needs assistance. Which has been cut.

The ADA isn't the same anymore. Each year it's been cut.

Thanks for the thumbs up, we all need it. Biggrin

Second notice of this particular diet. I'll read up on it for sure.

It works. It's based on our evolution and the body's ability to heal itself with a diet that puts you in a proper metabolic state, burning fat for energy. I wouldn't recommend it if I and many people I know weren't on it. I put my money where my mouth is. You don't have to stay at less than 25 gms of carbs per day . A target of around 60gms per day is enough to put you into ketosis ( our natural state of metabolism) but slowly work towards 60 starting with 100 and working down. Stay away from processed meats and eat the protein as raw as possible. Also stay away from any processed "low carb" shit they sell in the store including low carb wraps, it has to do with the free glutamate in them that is bad for people with neurological problems.. I think you'll see results within 3 weeks. Good Luck.

This saga made me weep a little, but also made me want to stand up and cheer for both Wes and for you, Janet, his equally courageous Mom. The bureaucratic manure-pile you describe needs to be shoveled away . . . . May somebody with the power to do that get busy, like Hercules in the stables. For a reader with no personal experience of the daily challenges and obstacles that confront autistic individuals and their families, your story arouses great admiration for your persistence and ability to keep your sense of humor. That's "you" plural. I hope the Foundation can find another internship that does not require pee in a bottle.

It's their loss.

By not allowing for Medical use they are really being biased in this decision.

Keep circulating the Resume, Keep looking for other Opportunities.

There will be others employers who will appreciate Wesley's goals and accomplishments.

It just takes some time sometimes, to find the right company, program, or apprenticeship.

to compare, to research to finally realize that this small tincture, this small amount helps him tremendously.

I should post the damn letter I had to write to try and explain to experts how this helps an autistic person when they themselves can't even tell me a fucking thing about autism.

it is their loss. truly.

Wes is embarrassed by the second photo because it shows him about to cry ... he said to keep it up for now but to post this better picture of him. Biggrin

And I understand. It is a frustrating and slow process to change this.

This prohibition weird outlaw status of our Northwestern states as we lead the fight for sanity with cannibus is crazy. I am so very sorry your son is one of those trapped in the middle of it all.

I will name a names. My husband died at OHSU in 2003 because he tested positive for cannibus. He had a legal Medical card from Washington where we lived. He needed a liver transplant because of a form of liver cancer attributed to agent Orange which he was exposed to in Vietnam.

Because of the positive test he was removed from the transplant list and died 3 months later. The real rub is had he taken the oxycontin he was prescribed he would have had no issue.

Turned me into a fighter for legalization. We just have to keep fighting.

it's a horrible law. my co-workers both have kids with leukemia who are now off the transplant lists because eco oil has saved their lives.

I am so sorry for your loss. all this grief over a plant that does so many wonderful things

we will keep fighting! xoxoxo

That prohibits them from taking people off the transplant list over the medical use of marijuana. It was championed by Jeff Merkley. It was passed within the last few months. They may want to find out the current status of that. If they have the energy (sometimes hard to find when trying to care for the gravely ill) contact Jeff and tell their story. Because this is not supposed to be happening anymore.

it into perspective. We know you're a good person, Wes. This happens because some of those out there are not good people, or they would make sure people don't get hurt by stupid laws.

Can you find jobs outside the program? Something fairly simple and/or part-time at first until you build up confidence? I'm thinking maybe less likely to drug test.

Jobs are hard to come by. Especially for the disabled. That's why there's job developer agencies and such. It seems the only jobs around are on the job training or jobs that are so demeaning that you wouldn't want your child to do them. Or questionable job policies. Some places pay the disabled less than minimum wage.

It's all a big grinding ball of frustration. This job was cool to Wes. In a hospital setting. Nice, safe commute. Nice people to work with and the job was almost dialed into his skills.

There will be other jobs and opportunities. It's just the hypocrisy of it, the stupid piss test and how this idea of raising him up actually crushed him.

The second photo shows just what the policy makers do. Crush.

He's in a big boat. I think of all the talented people at TOP who are "disabled". I was just wondering if the agency has outlived its usefulness.

I hate to say anything positive about the W word, but I shop at WalM all the time (will go elsewhere if I ever get the finances) and I know this store here, at least, hires a lot of disabled. Their employees are happy, for the most part (some live in my 'hood; we talk). It is almost always part-time. From the number of piercings and tattoos I've seen, I'm guessing they're not drug testing. Is that a stereotype? Probably pays lousy. Just a thought if there's one near you, as a starter job. The lousier the economy, the more WalM needs workers. AFAICT, the treatment varies according to the store; this one seems pretty good. Worth a try?

There's also a health food co-op here that obviously doesn't drug test - they all obviously work stoned! Any bohemian place like that around you? They seem to be having a great time. Bagged my ice cream with my hot dinner once, but one can't have everything.

I have read about the below-minimum issue before. I seem to vaguely recall that years ago, the government was paying the difference between what an employer paid and the minimum wage, or at least there was a proposal for such. Am I misremembering?
