Open Thread - Memories Edition, Friday, June 10, 2016

Hey, there was no masthead on last week's open thread. I must have forgot.

Great music is that which penetrates the ear with facility and leaves the memory with difficulty. Magical music never leaves the memory.
~Thomas Beecham~

Let's explore the memory and some hopefully memorable music.

THE HUMAN MEMORY

Since time immemorial, humans have tried to understand what memory is, how it works and why it goes wrong. It is an important part of what makes us truly human, and yet it is one of the most elusive and misunderstood of human attributes.

The popular image of memory is as a kind of tiny filing cabinet full of individual memory folders in which information is stored away, or perhaps as a neural super-computer of huge capacity and speed. However, in the light of modern biological and psychological knowledge, these metaphors may not be entirely useful and, today, experts believe that memory is in fact far more complex and subtle than that

It seems that our memory is located not in one particular place in the brain, but is instead a brain-wide process in which several different areas of the brain act in conjunction with one another (sometimes referred to as distributed processing). For example, the simple act of riding a bike is actively and seamlessly reconstructed by the brain from many different areas: the memory of how to operate the bike comes from one area, the memory of how to get from here to the end of the block comes from another, the memory of biking safety rules from another, and that nervous feeling when a car veers dangerously close comes from still another. Each element of a memory (sights, sounds, words, emotions) is encoded in the same part of the brain that originally created that fragment (visual cortex, motor cortex, language area, etc), and recall of a memory effectively reactivates the neural patterns generated during the original encoding. Thus, a better image might be that of a complex web, in which the threads symbolize the various elements of a memory, that join at nodes or intersection points to form a whole rounded memory of a person, object or event. This kind of distributed memory ensures that even if part of the brain is damaged, some parts of an experience may still remain. Neurologists are only beginning to understand how the parts are reassembled into a coherent whole.

How the Brain's Overstuffed Filing System Fails

Age is not entirely to blame for forgetfulness.

The reason that some people are absentminded and others have minds like a steel-trap might have more to do with how the brain files memories and makes room for new ones, new research suggests.

The overstuffed file system that collects daily to-do's while keeping track of childhood memories has remained an enigma, especially regarding the mechanism for such mega-bit storage amidst the deluge of incoming bytes.

Auditory Memory: The Overlooked Learning Skill Deficiency

A weakness in auditory memory can have serious consequences in the realm of learning for students, states educational therapist Addie Cusimano in her book Learning Disabilities: There is a Cure.

Auditory memory involves being able to take in information that is presented orally, to process that information, store it in one's mind and then recall what one has heard. Basically, it involves the skills of attending, listening, processing, storing, and recalling. Because students with auditory memory weaknesses pick up only bits and pieces of what is being said during a classroom lecture, they make sense of only little of what is said by the teacher. Afterwards they are able to recall only a small amount or none of what was said, says Cusimano.

"Students with auditory memory deficiencies will often experience difficulty developing a good understanding of words, remembering terms and information that has been presented orally, for example, in history and science classes."

"These students will also experience difficulty processing and recalling information that they have read to themselves. When we read we must listen and process information we say to ourselves, even when we read silently. If we do not attend and listen to our silent input of words, we cannot process the information or recall what we have read. Therefore, even silent reading involves a form of listening," says Cusimano.

Is the cold duck good for memory?

Red Wine Compound May Improve Memory, Study Suggests

A substance found in red wine and dark chocolate that has been touted for its supposed anti-aging effects may improve people's memory, new research suggests.

In a study of overweight adults, those who took resveratrol supplements for six months had better short-term recall than their counterparts who took a placebo. The people who took the supplement also had more connections among brain areas involved in memory, and this paralleled improvements over the study period in their ability to break down sugar in the body, researchers found.

This small pilot study, detailed Wednesday (June 4) in the Journal of Neuroscience, is the first to show a link between the red wine compound and cognition in overweight adults, said Veronica Witte, a neuroscientist at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin in Germany. [6 Foods That Are Good for Your Brain]

"From a clinical point of view, our findings suggest that regular, high-level intake of resveratrol in the elderly may convey protective effects on cognitive functions, a hypothesis that now needs to be evaluated in large-scale clinical trials," Witte told Live Science.

Gee, do you think that last article was sponsored by anybody?

When Sweetie lost the ability to roll over, the ubiquitous advice was to get a memory foam mattress, along with a movable frame. The memory foam facilitates lying in one position all night.

How to Choose the Right Mattress

Is it time for a new mattress? Do you wake up tired or achy, or does your mattress look saggy or lumpy? Or maybe you sleep better at hotels. If you dread a trip to Sears or Sleepy’s, realize that you've got more options than ever before—department and specialty stores are no longer the default destination. Now great mattresses at fair prices can be found at Costco and online retailers.

We test queen-size mattresses (60”w x 80”l) because they’re the most common size purchased. (For your reference, the other standard dimensions are king, 76x80 inches; California king, 72x84; full, or double, 53x75; and twin, 38x75.) We subject each mattress to a battery of tests, including running a 308-pound roller over each one 30,000 times to simulate 8 to 10 years of use. Still, there’s much to know even before you start shopping. Here’s your path to a good night’s sleep.

The memory foam is 'different'. When you first lie down, it is uncomfortable, after a couple of minutes it feels good. It is more difficult to change positions and you have to go through the couple of minutes adjusting to the new position.

About Sleep's Role in Memory

Abstract
Over more than a century of research has established the fact that sleep benefits the retention of memory. In this review we aim to comprehensively cover the field of “sleep and memory” research by providing a historical perspective on concepts and a discussion of more recent key findings. Whereas initial theories posed a passive role for sleep enhancing memories by protecting them from interfering stimuli, current theories highlight an active role for sleep in which memories undergo a process of system consolidation during sleep. Whereas older research concentrated on the role of rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep, recent work has revealed the importance of slow-wave sleep (SWS) for memory consolidation and also enlightened some of the underlying electrophysiological, neurochemical, and genetic mechanisms, as well as developmental aspects in these processes. Specifically, newer findings characterize sleep as a brain state optimizing memory consolidation, in opposition to the waking brain being optimized for encoding of memories. Consolidation originates from reactivation of recently encoded neuronal memory representations, which occur during SWS and transform respective representations for integration into long-term memory. Ensuing REM sleep may stabilize transformed memories. While elaborated with respect to hippocampus-dependent memories, the concept of an active redistribution of memory representations from networks serving as temporary store into long-term stores might hold also for non-hippocampus-dependent memory, and even for nonneuronal, i.e., immunological memories, giving rise to the idea that the offline consolidation of memory during sleep represents a principle of long-term memory formation established in quite different physiological systems.

I am dealing (from afar) with a 96 y/o mother who through several falls and brain injuries has lost all ability to retain short term memory. She is vaguely aware that something is wrong, and complains that her memory is not as good as before. She is also long term sufferer of macular degeneration and now deafness. Loss of any sensory ability is detrimental, loss of multiple senses is destructive. I am sure that she is frustrated, annoyed, frightened---and then forgets. 24/7. She has had persistent hallucinations, thankfully none are processed as frightening. A flame floating in the refrigerator is interesting, I have told her that is charming. In attempt to quell any fears...

Now if I were her, I would copy/paste the last paragraph all day. But I have some share of self-control. Best to you and Sweetie. I recently bought new pillows. That is good.

I don't envy your slide into winter. Does it snow down there? Wet or dry? Blue or grey? Windy or calm?

It seems like it is windier than it used to be here. Many people mention that, I am not the only one. Yesterday was cautionary, breezy enough that caterpillar-cut leaves were flying off trees, along with small branches large enough to smash my puppy (none did, but she had to inspect). Cool today (high about 20C) and warmer tomorrow (30+?) with a chance of severe weather. Oh boy.

No, no snow in the Auckland area. Auckland is a subtropical climate. It won't be long though before there's snow at higher elevations. Winter in Auckland is very wet, but unlike Seattle we are graced with many hours of sun as well.

She has a heavy prescription so she primarily wore contact lenses and had a pair of granny/Lennon glasses. The glasses lenses were small and the glasses would fall down, so I took her out and got new glasses. Glasses with bigger lens and strurdy frame. Then I take a roll of ribbon and put a ribbon on every page for about 20 pages. That way she can do a little reading.

I repeated it. get it? Sorry, bad joke.

Most of life, we age and barely notice. 40 is like 50 and 50 is like 60. Around age 45, my aunt, who was like a second mom to me, was the first signicant person in my life to die. When it happened, I actually realized for the first time that I really wasn't immortal. That was sort of a shock, but it didn't effect my own personal sense or place in time.

All of a sudden, my husband and I turned 70 and what a shock. It was like falling through a hole in the universe. If only one of us were getting forgetful, I'd say health and/or drugs. But when it happened to both of us, we are only six months apart in age, the logical conclusion is age. The "memories", as in remembrances, emphasize the feeling of time passed and make 70 feel even older.

Anyway, good morning all. I hope your memories are sound and your remembrances are full of joy.

Drives me nuts. I'm very sober and earnest. We are like so different from one another in every way except neither of us will back down. How the hell we ever stayed married for 50 years is beyond me. Since neither one of us has packed up and left, we figure it must be "luv".

I am 69 and I have noticed my memory is not as good as it once was. I call those memory blips selective deletions. LOL

I have a terrible memory for names, but have a memory for insignificant trivia like a steel trap. When I worked in planning, someone would call or come in and identify themselves by name, say they had spoken to me before. I never could remember the names and sometimes not the faces, but I always remembered their property. I would ask them where their property was located and immediately the entire conversation I had with them would come right back.

I have also noticed that times in my life that were not particularly happy are times I have very little memories of, like high school or my first marriage. I think my mind blocks out details of those times from my memories.

Overall, I tend to be a person who does not really enjoy reminiscing anyway. I guess I would rather look forward than back. As long as I know where my glasses are, I guess I am doing just fine. Biggrin

I had cataract surgery, and I have monovision implants. Drug store magnifiers don't work with monovision. When I bought glasses this last time, I loaded those suckers up. I even bought frames that are somewhat flexible, less to worry about if you fall asleep in bed with them. Several pairs of these, and I'd have to take out a loan.

magnifying glasses for reading. I have three pairs and leave them around the house. The other day I was looking for a pair and asked Shah if he had seen my glasses anywhere. He said they are on your head. As I don't need them other then when I'm reading I push them up on the top of my head.

I have a friend who has such heavy duty glasses that she can't see well enough to find them if she sets them down. I once tried her glasses on and they made me dizzy they were so strong.

Years of pasting up fly type probably did my eyes in. The computer is hard on your eyes too. I worked for a art director who taught me eye exercises which I still do when transiting from reading to general eyesight mode. He gave me a book called The Art of Seeing written by Adolus Huxley. This book seem to help me if nothing else they make my head feel better after squinting. I notice however that Huxley wears glasses in most of the photo's I've seen.

After my husband died, I discovered in the back of the packed filing cabinet some porno VCRs, drug paraphernalia, a his diary, written pre-me. I never knew about the diary, rest was easy toss. But I had to read the diary. And melted down. Obsession with another woman is not easy, wasn't for him, wasn't for me. I actually met her while with him in an airport flying out of the country. Things rippled for a while then. But this was college-age angst and violence threats. I burned the diary so that my children would never see it. Demons, demons.

There was also a printed letter, from years ago that he wrote to his family, expressing his pride and love. I copied that for both kids. We have talked about the between the lines. And no conclusion, we are content to let it go.

an article I read yesterday and I thought you might enjoy it.
http://billmoyers.com/story/wasserman-schultz-has-a-change-of-heart-but-...

Democratic insiders like Wasserman Schultz, however, continued to whistle past the graveyard, believing that the well-funded and well-connected Clinton machine — and general fear of a Trump regime — were enough to carry them to victory in November, despite the grass-roots disgust with a party that reeks of rot from the top. Once the champions of people who came home from work with hands dirty from toil and sweat, too many establishment Democrats went over to the dark side, taking up the cause of the well-manicured executives (think: Goldman Sachs) who write the checks and the mercenaries who deliver them (for a substantial cut, of course).
The lust for loot which now defines the Democratic establishment became pronounced in the Bill Clinton years, when the Clinton-friendly Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) abandoned its liberal roots and embraced “market-based solutions” that led to deregulation, tax breaks, and subsidies for the 1 percent. Seeking to fill coffers emptied by the loss of support from a declining labor movement, Democrats rushed into the arms of big business and crony capitalists.

Nothing new here. It is just nice to see the obvious stated in the press every now and then.

Hope everyone has a nice Friday!

mind and can kill you - and I am not kidding like you are not.

So as all of what you wrote is so serious, all I am left with is trying to say something simple to joke it off.

At least I know now, why Nancy Pelosi can hold on for so long so well, she constantly eats little bits of nice, dark chocolate pralines, she never leaves those behind. Now with the red wine ... I think I will try both, red wine and chocolate. So, what is Boehner drinking?

Forgetting names ... don't do as I did .. went to visit my old employer's studios after almost two years of being retired and ran into one of the free lancers from LA. I said, oh yeah, you are the free lancer who lives now in Martha's Vineyard. I remember. ... Well her bewildered and upset look at me, made that my last visit I could have made to that studio, for sure.

Oh, I am grateful that our brain is made to suppress the bad memories and to embellish the good ones. But I think I know what we never forget. The little things that happened to make you understand that some things you didn't expect to be true, but revealed they were. You know, the "sudden click" syndrome? Wink Smells you can't forget either. I can't handle the smell of milk that got sour. Always immediately get a gag reflex. Since 50 years and going on.

All the best, love your OTs. I always forget to get up out of my bed in the morning. That's the VooDoo of the c99p. Have a good day, all.

*that* kinda power, he'd probably never have left the band! (;-)

Gotta say, witnessing the late Joe Nannini in performance did completely change my drumming style. Being an East Coaster at the time, I didn't get to see them nearly as much as I would have if I'd been out in LA. But when I did get to see them, I stole lots of ideas... One of the great things that came out of that era for me was the realization that *whimsy* had every bit as much place in punkwaveartpop music as did power, angst, and political messaging. Heady times, for sure. It was a great time to be a rocker early in a career. Guess that is the memory I really need to cling to to get through these times...

And just to lighten it up, but still definitely bring all of the power, angst, political messaging, and whimsy all at the same time: my all-time favorite underappreciated Boston band of the same era. Here's Human Sexual Response, with Casey Cameron doing that voodoo that she dood so well. I had the privilege to play a bunch of shows with them in several different bands, and they always treated everyone they worked with like gold: great people. I worked with her at a big tech company years later, and her voice *still* makes me melt...

I always seem to gravitate more towards the blues/soul/jam band bar band sort of scene. It is probable a legacy of growing up in the Burgh (also a prior decade or two).

My current part-time gig is with a horn-driven blues band (I'm backup for the main drummer). Haven't had a mainline gig in _years_: too much work for too little dough. Just the same, if it doesn't smell like stale beer, I don't know how to play it...

The last year my last major band was working (1983), the Phoenix "Guide to Boston Bands" had 2300 listings. Two thousand three hundred- everything from GB wedding bands to oompah lederhosen to singing telegrams to J. freakin' Geils and Til Tuesday. Hard to get noticed in that environment, but not for lack of trying. Wouldn't trade those days for the world. Band broke up and called it quits for good when we went to see, and I'm not making this up, "This Is Spinal Tap" when it first came out. All we could say to each other afterwards was "What the _hell_ are we doing?" That's the era of that avatar picture of mine...

Learned two major things at that time: 1. The way to make a small fortune in rock and roll is to start with a large one, and 2. No one gets out alive!

And, just for some variety, a nice bluesy track with Vinnie Colaiuta (my favorite drummer), Tal Wilkenfeld, one of my favorite bassists, and also some British guy who plays guitar whose name I can never remember... Go Tal!

Who does not love dessert? Raspberry filled dark chocolate with a nice Pinot Noir, what's not to like for a dinner treat?

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon publicly acknowledged Thursday that he removed the Saudi-led coalition currently bombing Yemen from a blacklist of child killers — 72 hours after it was published — due to a financial threat to defund United Nations programs.

The secretary-general didn’t name the source of the threat, but news reports have indicated it came directly from the Saudi government

My parents were deists who believed that if there was a god, it is unique to every human mind. If there is a "soul" it resides in the mind of men and women. We all live in our own reality. Off topic, my regrets for waxing philosophical.

The mind is nothing more than a living computer. I equate it to flow charts with lots of storage space. From stardust we came and will return.

I have been in the building in Bloomington where Hoagy composed the tune. I have also disposed of a human body reduced to cremains into water. It looks like sand, but behaves as latex paint. Mystical. Those went off toward the Atlantic ocean and then back to the stars.

Not what the establishment wants

The campaign to take Britain out of the EU has opened up a remarkable 10-point lead over the Remain camp, according to an exclusive poll for The Independent.

The survey of 2,000 people by ORB found that 55 per cent believe the UK should leave the EU (up four points since our last poll in April), while 45 per cent want it to remain (down four points). These figures are weighted to take account of people’s likelihood to vote. It is by far the biggest lead the Leave camp has enjoyed since ORB began polling the EU issue for The Independent a year ago, when it was Remain who enjoyed a 10-point lead. Now the tables have turned.

Even when the findings are not weighted for turnout, Leave is on 53 per cent (up three points since April) and Remain on 47 per cent (down three). The online poll, taken on Wednesday and Thursday, suggests the Out camp has achieved momentum at the critical time ahead of the 23 June referendum.

I know we're gonna meet some day
In the crumbled financial institutions of this land
There will be tables and chairs
There'll be pony rides and dancing bears
There'll even be a band

'Cause listen, after the fall there'll be no more countries
No currencies at all

Wide awake dreams. I mainly get the co-mingling of memories and dreams in the morning. I just let them carry on as when I finally am present in the now they sort themselves out. You and sweetie are very inspiring and you are a good man. They really are hard to find but here at c99% we seem to have an abundance of them. Thanks for sharing your life with us as it's teaching me how to live in love regardless of what comes at you.

The articles about sleep and the filing system go along with the co-mingling. I have dreams that play off of stuff that is going on, and co-mingles tangential stuff from the filing system. Sometimes it seems pretty real and other times I am aware that it is mental gumbo.

There sure are a bunch of good folks around here.
