Open Thread - Wednesday July 29, 2015

Good Morning, 99%'ers! For the last three months, it seems as though I have been on the road a lot and have not been keeping up with all the news and developments in the outside world, especially on the international front. With all my traveling, I have been eating out far too often and not exercising enough. I used to run but quit about ten years ago due to chronic foot problems. Now my exercise of choice is walking, but I had not been as consistent during this traveling time. So recently I decided to buckle down and get back on the walking program which has been haphazard these last three months.

I noticed that today is the beginning rollout of the mandatory Windows 10 upgrades to all PC's using the Windows 7 or Windows 8 operating system. Although Microsoft has stated that the rollout will be done in phases, no one is really sure how and when this will be completed.

There are roughly 1.6 billion Windows machines worldwide; 850 million of those check into the Windows Update mechanism every month. An unknown number of Win7/Win8 users -- let's guess 500 million -- aren't under a volume license, and thus qualify for a free upgrade. There are 5 million registered Windows Insiders, although it isn't clear how many have actually installed the Windows 10 Technical Preview, much less kept it updated. And we have an unknown number of Win7 SP1 and Win 8.1 Update users who have signed on for the upgrade, thanks to Microsoft's advertising in the system tray and the GWX program.

A group of Windows Insiders have been testing the new Windows 10 program and have experienced a number of bugs associated with it that have caused their programs to crash. As recently as this Monday, Microsoft was patching bugs in the system. As another report called it

Microsoft plays whack-a-mole with Windows 10 bugs – with just TWO days left on the clock

A number of nagging bugs have cropped up in the last few days that have some Windows 10 testers scratching their heads at just how an OS this raw can be considered production-ready.

In one case, testers who tried to uninstall programs using the Control Panel – the customary Windows 8.1 method – instead of the newer Settings->System->Apps & features method, Windows Explorer would crash and immediately restart.

Another reported Explorer crash is triggered whenever you try to enable or disable an active network connection.

The first rollout of Windows 10 will be to the Windows Insiders so hopefully any other major bugs will be worked out before they get down to the average technical dummies like me. Help Which reminds me, there is a certain irony that yours truly who is one of the most technically unsavvy users here wrote about this topic. Unknw Perhaps we might even have a Windows Insider among us who can tell us what to expect from the new Windows 10 and why there is such a rush to get it out the door and installed on our computers.

Update: This article and video appeared at Yahoo. com which explains a lot about Windows 10. My husband and I have both been using Windows 7, so we did not have to deal with Windows 8 which caused a lot of user complaints. Perhaps this is the reason why there was such a rush to get Windows 10 out.

Also today, July 29 marks the first nationwide organizing event for the supporters of Bernie Sanders. And yes, I do see you, Al. Bye

As per usual, this is an Open Thread so feel free to post on any topic of your own choosing.

at New Egg. It is not referbished they at least 7 months ago offered Windows7 as a option. It was a hard slog to find. I'm glad I found it, yet resentful of the onward march that says everybody needs to go along and buy whatever your presented with as the inevitable way forward. Still it's a piece of shit operationally and user wise. Hey I want my Windows 98 back the OS where I could go in and manually move shit around and decide what my files should or should not contain. Try deleting a file or moving it these days unless you are a mad geek.

can't possibly get away with this, IMO.

Even many of the national MSM campaign reporters that I listen to daily, think that FSC will be forced to stake out a stance on Keystone, before all is said and done--or suffer the consequences of not having done so.

sounded high-handed to me and the video is worse, her condescending look, ugh. Been a little pushed for time today and have yet to wade through Bob's diary on the satin, not that I really need to; as I've written for months, he helped start the meme to begin with, dirty pool.

Maybe, Clinton will be outed on Keystone in debates; wait, what debates?

Hillary is not going to be able to continue to give non-answers to tough questions like this. People do not want equivocation. People want decisive and substantive answers. Hillary continues to hedge and the comparison to Sanders straight talk makes her look really out of touch. She is too compromised to even campaign forcefully if she even believed the same things that Sanders does. However, I tend to think she does not believe them either.

BTW, One thing I cannot help but notice is how uninspired her audience looks. Boredom #yawn........

listening to the POTUS Channel (XM).

Wink

Seriously, I simply have to temporarily turn down the volume when FSC's on--meaning, when XM broadcasts her stump speeches. (Sometimes, I do try to find a transcript, to see what 'BS' she had to say.)

Even the show's host, Mason, laughs at her pathetic delivery--a total snoozer. Heck, she's gone from a shrill speech pattern, to a flat-out droning one. (and I don't mean that in a sexist manner)

I sorta wondered if some in the video audience were paid actors (a la Donald Trump's kick-off event).

BTW, some of the XM Radio programs are really revealing/insightful, since these hosts/guests/reporters aren't shackled with the usual constraints that you'd see on Network or Cable TV, etc. IOW, in some instances, you get the unvarnished truth--not just the Establishment talking points. Sorta refreshing.

And the guest are mostly top straight news reporters, although the blogosphere is represented, and quite evenly, I'd say. Just in smaller doses, which suits me. I want the hard facts/info to form my own opinion--not the other way around.

He asked her for a yes or no answer and she triangulated around it. IMHO, that looks worse than coming out and saying that you support it. Because what it shows to me is that she will not take a stand and people want straight answers even when they may not agree with them. They want decisive leadership and she showed absolutely zero leadership in her answer.

For recommending this site. I hope that it is far less contentious than DK... I am a long time member there...lifer, thanks to a kind soul who gave me a lifetime subscription anonymously. But lately I have felt very left out... the fighting, the anger, the "inevitability" of Clinton... the division over who's rights are more important than anyone else's rights... I am a believer in HUMAN Rights....It is all becoming much too much.

I have dropped my "handle" here... I am Sarabeth there....but I have come to the realization that I no longer need to hide from anyone.

I hope you will feel comfortable posting both comments and diaries here. JtC (JohnnytheConqueroo) has made this place very user friendly as far as formatting your diaries and comments. Embeds are very easy and we have a nice selection of emoticons if you wish to use them. We do not all agree on everything here but our motto is to disagree agreeably. No other rules about topics etc. Write what you wish and it does not necessarily have to be political either. Smile

BTW, my name is Nancy, but I opted to keep my dkos user name so people would know who I am. You can be as open or as anonymous as you wish here depending upon your comfort level.

WASHINGTON — Manisha Sharma at first had trouble believing Sen. Bernie Sanders really planned to attend the gathering she had volunteered to host for his presidential campaign Wednesday night

But when campaign officials asked about her Internet upload speed, she believed.

"I said, 'Are you being serious?' I was so excited," she recalled.

Sanders will use Sharma's southwest Washington apartment building to organize his nationwide army of volunteers, giving live-streamed remarks to 3,146 grassroots gatherings in homes, coffee shops and union halls in all 50 states.

It pains me to see the attacks on Markos Moulitsas for an opinion with much merit. It pains me even more that many liberals continue to fail at what we preach -- inclusiveness of all people, inclusiveness of ideas, opinions, and thoughts without fear.
Before I start my prose let me state categorically I am neither a fan of Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, or any of the Democratic candidates. I believe Hillary Clinton is too close to Wall Street and no longer has a real affinity for the poor or the middle-class. That is easily inferred.

Bernie Sander’s initial single focus on inequality as he ignores local and international social and military factors including the Palestinian/Israeli conflict is very problematic. I do love his inequality message along with his more redistributive solutions which are in fact the only economic solutions in an economy like ours.

Next up - IP wars.

there is another diary on the satin now by CR that also attempts a cover-up with syrup. Frankly, it's my opinion, that this whole false NN perspective and PoC won't vote meme--if continued by the FP and others in SM--will blow sky high.

The posters who lie with abandon don't concern me as much as the sneaky ones; believing they are so clever that we won't see their ruse; which is damnably using a good cause to elevate their chosen candidate.

right over his head? I think they [the DNC hit squad] are stereotyping black people and taking them for granted like they've been taking the left for granted for years. I think they're wrong. People of all stripe are pissed at corporations, banks, and politicians and looking for someone to kick.

In addition, I'm not sure Bernie needs crowds that look like Obama's crowd given is broad appeal. Swiftboating Bernie and the left is going to be much, much harder than when they swiftboated Dean.

Reddit. I belong to a local group, non partisan citizen, based called Stop Demolishing Portland. We are fast growing group of Portlander's who are trying to do something to stop the developers/bent Democratic city pols/realtors/ and bankster investors who are at an alarming rate literally bulldozing our urban liveable neighborhoods and building unaffordable toxic housing and retail spaces they call 'infill' and inevitable endless growth. Not to get to into this whole different kettle of fish but the opposing pro-growth people have several obnoxious Reddit groups. Ones called #loudbiker's? ( obnoxious yuppie bicyclist's not Harley's) and they have managed to get 4 people elected to a close by neighborhood assoc.'s board by dubious tactics. They call us NIMBY's or far lefty extremists and other nasty familiar names. They gather in Reddit. Then there was the moderator who quit because of blatant racism of the real sort. I guess it's a forum open to anyone but whew! The few times I've venture into Reddit territory it was hair curling. But hey I'll give Bernie's supporters on Reddit a whirl. Maybe Stop Demolishing Portland should try posting there. As of now it's a facebook group with local activism and demonstrations and civic city participation and presence.
