Site Performance Slowdown
Submitted by JtC on Sat, 06/04/2016 - 10:55pm
Folks, just to let you know the management is aware of the current performance slowdown and we're doing our best to pinpoint the problem. It started last night about this time and has been ongoing, I hesitate to blame it on server over capacity as we just did a large resource upgrade just a couple of weeks ago and the on site traffic has been relatively light since last night when it began.
Thanks for your patience.

Thanks, JtC! One of our email providers
came under DDOS attack several months ago.
Good luck!

I just googled DDOS
I hope it's not an attack, or if it is, the attacker is stung by a bee while the site flows like a butterfly.
It's the Clintonites doing! They can't dampen our spirits so
they will just dampen our server.

I await your wise council, Captain!
That would be “Captain” as in “Star Trek”
For a brief moment I was afraid it was turning into “O Captain, my Captain” as in Dead Poets Society.
Let’s all try to lend our support and make sure that never happens.
Yeah, I hope not, too. Just switched browsers--seems
that Firefox is running faster/smoother. Guess it could just be coincidence.
Of course, I just posted a couple of comments in duplicate--I suppose due to the current slowdown.
Good luck, Everyone.

Is it better now?
I may have pinpointed it. Seems better to me.
It definitely is
Yes, it's better.

And I thought it was my pc all along, JtC!
Not to add to your many tasks, but do you in future have plans to add an additional step prior to clicking publish? Just a confirmation that one really intends to publish the diary draft.
If you don't, no big deal.

Howdy JnH...
Good idea, I'll check into adding that step.
I just checked my email tonight and there was one from smiley7, he just finished his last proton treatment today and is finally headed back home, he sounded pretty happy about that. He said he has much to share so I hope to hear more from him. Great news!
Oh, That is Fantastic News!
I'm so glad to hear that smiley's treatments went well. In fact, just yesterday I was thinking of emailing him as he'd said that his treatments would end in two months.
If you talk him, please wish him all the best as he begins the process of normalizing his daily routine.

I think he may...
drop us a line or two here once he gets settled. Either way I'll pass your best wishes on to him.
Could be. As I mentioned above, about 10 minutes
ago, switched browsers--seems faster, now.
Maybe it's due to whatever you've done, JtC.
Hey, thanks!

OK, I think I found it...
since it started last night and has continued through the day, I backtracked everything I've done since then. The problems started last night around the same time that I created the new Blog Roll so I just temporarily removed it and the performance picked up, went back to normal actually. I checked the Blog Roll code and there's some funky formatting there, I'll have to rewrite it and then put it back up.
Slow right now from Germany but that may be because maintenance
being scheduled in the wee hours (10:30 am Central European Summer Time = 4:30 am EDT and 1:30 am PDT).
Server not responding repeatedly
for me when I check with Is It
Down, most recently 4:07 EDT.
Couldn't access the site earlier
when this post first went up
between it being excruciatingly
slow (although server was
responding) and getting locked
out when server was down.
Just letting you know.

getting in.
My browser is now giving me
repeated network error messages,
server is responding (for now).

JtC, so sorry it's your headache.
I feel tiny, having only overnight too-warm for sleep weather, and bandaids on my bunged-up arms due to puppy exuberance. She is currently sleeping on a leather sofa, chez moi. Site is still up for me, I have a small-name ISP who probably is firewalled from the major node at Cornell. Frontier.com bought all their copper and switches from AT&T, fire sale prices. And now my email goes through Yahoo, a most un-informative newsbit clearance house. DSL for me, Cu after fiberoptic (thanks, Corning). I have no air capacities, yet.

Sleep in front of the fan, RL! I do so and so far don't need AC.
My parents never let us as kids for fear of us catching cold. As if moving air around in 80-degree weather would chill us. Now I point fans right at me all the time. What a relief!

Still very slow here
6.45AM CT (US Nr Chicago)
Comcast broadband
25-30 seconds of nothing - then loads all at once. In other words its not the sluggish one item at a time thing that happens sometimes on the internet.

I generally stay logged in here (desktop which sleeps)
Other sites are loading normally, this one is slow, 30 sec about right. I could restart Firefox, my preferred browser. But would it make a reset for c99p if we all logged off and started again? I have uninformed awareness of the complexities.

Slow here-TWC territory in rural Northern NY-
Using Safari on an iPad. Had been doing fine until yesterday late.
Good luck and hope it all works out! We need this site for our sanity!
Thanks for all you are doing to further our fight for a health 99 percent!
I'm in it all the way to the convention! #Bernie16
Very slow for me both yesterday and this morning
And a word of warning.
Twice now when I have hit "preview" my words have completely evaporated and I was returned to a blank composition window after the preview failed. This happened yesterday after I wrote my essay. BUT, because I learned a long time ago at other sites to right click "select all" and then "copy" before I ever try to save or preview a composition, I was spared the sick-making feeling of having a lot of time and effort wasted and having to start all over.
I think we can all agree that nothing is as frustrating as having the brilliant distillate of one's fevered mind and frenzied fingers escaping untethered into the ether, forever lost to future generations and scholars.
" “Human kindness has never weakened the stamina or softened the fiber of a free people. A nation does not have to be cruel to be tough.” FDR "
Brilliant words here, PL! ;-) I have been saving drafts for
quite a while, ever since the message system went kerflooey with the "upgrade" at that other site and half of the messages disappear. But for those who haven't thought of it, I know they will find your warning extremely helpful.
Indeed, I have had a few words no longer available to future scholars (love it!), but fortunately for all generations, most remain in the Internet oeuvre as well as on my desktop. I'm sure all are greatly relieved to hear this.

I have resorted to scribbling w/pencil on paper
some of my night blasts of prose and find in the morning (if I ever find that piece of paper again) that it looks like undecipherable scribblings on paper.
I took some Coursera courses and discovered that I had lost the ability to take notes. Hell, for a while in college, I could fast-print and have perfectly legible transcriptions. In ink.

For me: better than last night, but still slower than
Thursday/Friday. 8:49 a/m EDT
Don't believe everything you think.
8;50 am - still having problems....
It seems like it works, bogs, works, bogs.
Sorry you are stuck with this.

Thanks folks...
I'm on vacation but I see I'm not going to have much of one today. Thanks for all the input.
heh, JtC, this is a sign from God, accept it,
he just wants to protect you and us from the conspiratorial jerks, who want to destroy our mouths' utterances and the server's functioning, exactly at this time. /s
Don't sweat it. Not worth it. The timing of this is just too much of a coincidence. Here speaks the super conspiratorial mind. Crooks are everywhere around. Angels too. So, if we can't talk for a while, consider it a rescue operation from above. The evildoers won't win. Guaranteed.
How about taking a second vacation from the current vacation ?

Breaking from a vacation sucks
hope this doesn't eat up too much of your day.
Couple of thoughts that may be useful but probably won't:
First time I noticed the slowdown was after the deletions after the LD spat (hope that is all sorted out btw)
Their was a maintenance note presumably when you were deleting the essay and ever since then the site has been slow. The only reason I even noticed was because a couple of my comments got nuked in the process (I think)
I just uploaded a photo to your server and added it to a comment and that part of the process went without a hitch. iow the lag seems one way, server to browser as opposed to browser to server.
Final thought - no 'waiting for...' appears at the bottom of my Chrome (windows 10) browser so it doesn't like a 3rd party addon is to blame.
Anyway - hope you get your vacation back, IT really sucks.
“To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize.” -Voltaire
Yeah it sucks...
makes me question why I'm even doing it.
Still extremely slow at 929 AM Eastern. Darn, Johnny, I hope
the snafu is resolved soon so you can vacation properly!

Darn, Johnny,
sorry about the trouble. You are much more inconvenienced than I am. Not a good day off, hmm? Take tomorrow off!
Wish I could help. I did notice that it was very sluggish even when logged off, with none of the right hand column, blog roll, etc. showing.
The only thing different on the front page is the video with robyn's Spoiler alert essay. It looks like a YouTube, so that would be weird, but oh well. It's html5?
Take care, Johnny. Thank you for all your work and time.
I have no info, not making accusation, but want all to be aware:
#OpSilence – Ghost Squad Hackers Target Fox News, CNN, NBC and MSN
As of June 1st, Ghost Squad Hackers – one of the groups participating in #OpIcarus – have launched a series of coordinated attacks against leading members of the corporate ‘main stream’ media. Giving credit where credit is due, Tec.mic and Softpedia were the first to report the operation. But their reports only tell a portion of the whole story, we will explain why in a moment.
Broadly speaking, the goal of the #OpSilence is to attack all the corrupt major news networks that mislead and censor information from the general public. More specifically, the news agencies who conceal the crimes of Israel, while misleading the population about the mistreatment of the Palestinian people. The operation is off to a quick start, Ghost Squad has successfully”carried out DDoS attacks on CNN and FOX News” already just this month. More attacks are promised, NBC and MSM appears to be their next target.
When Tech.mic and Softpedia presented their coverage of the hacks, they included images and references directly to Anonymous. But upon reading these articles, Ghost Squad had a message of their own that they want everyone to hear:
It is no secret Ghost Squad has a close affiliation with Anonymous; I am sure this is how the group got started in the first place. The group insists they speak for themselves, they are essentially trying to get their own reputation – credibility.
But there is a second layer to this discussion highlighting the recent divide within Anonymous. There has been a “Civil War” of sorts in recent months, and the reputation of the Anonymous collective as a whole has been damaged. Last winter, prominent hacktivist group Ghostsec also cut their ties with Anonymous. In a statement they said “Anonymous has a habit of shooting in every direction and asking questions later.” In other interviews they imply that Anonymous has developed a reputation for behaving immature – more concerned with silly DDoS’ing attacks than changing the world.
Since the quarreling of #OpWhiteRose many people have splintered off, or left Anonymous entirely – just another in the long list of strange effects Donald Trump has had on the entire world. Ghost Squad is one of the groups effected by this ‘Civil War.’ In the time since this happened last March, the group has exploded onto the scene, quickly becoming one of the most influential and talked about hacking groups in the entire world in 2016.
I have no doubt about the origins of this operation though, this goes back to #OpMediaControl which began last June. The operation called for the hacking of every major news network in the United States, testing their email systems, DDoS’ing web sites, attempting to hack in teleprompters or live feeds – anything you could think of. Last I heard back in December, they were still trying to recruit people to join them for an event this summer. Sound familiar to what Ghost Squad is doing right now?
The following video was from #OpMediaControl release last June: youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6fbuRM_F6o
For the purposes of accuracy, AnonHQ News reached out to our contacts in #OpMediaControl. We gave them a preview of the article and asked them what they thought. They showed us a press release dating May 28, 2016, a video proclaiming that #OpMediaControl has been re-engaged. Of course, #OpSilence proceeded to begin June 1st. In another interesting note, earlier last month Anonymous Resistance Movement, one of the groups behind #OpMediaControl, conducted an interview with GhostSquad. So as you can see, the two groups are well acquainted with one another – these operations are no coincidence.
Ghost Squad may be stepping up from the pack here, but make no mistake, this operation has been in the making for over a year and Anonymous led the way.

De-Nihilism
Not sure that would even be possible.
That would be a fair criticism -- -- but there are so many #Ops and monikers above that I can't follow the thread of who is doing what, so I say a pox on all their houses.
Representing the 99% at the Dem Nat'l Convention in Philly.
... the log-in difficulties that I have been experiencing
over the past couple of days surely lend credence to the DDoS hypothesis --
When Cicero had finished speaking, the people said “How well he spoke”.
When Demosthenes had finished speaking, the people said “Let us march”.
Very bad here and timing out
Took 10 min. to get on.

It's okay here for
now. Yesterday it kept kicking out. This morning C99% along with the weather site had no server found messages. I went down stair and did my unplug the modem thing and fired it up again and it seems to work fine. I thought it was the heat as the west is having a heat wave. 101 in Portland yesterday. So sorry you have to deal with this. It sure seems to e working now. going to go check on some other sites. Now I can't preview. So it's still wonky.
