Photography Open Thread 06/03/2016
Friday Photography
Today's post is about something that I like to do to keep my eye fresh and the creative juices flowing so to speak.
This week's assignment is Local any image taken close (within a few blocks say) of where you live
Please post any photos, comment about anything or ask any questions about photography (If I don’t know the answer someone here probably will)- Please treat this as a photography (and anything else for that matter) open thread.
Going for a Walk
Being a photographer is not about having a great camera, being an expert at post processing, a massive client list, or lucrative book deals. It is about seeing. In our normal lives we don't tend to see stuff - we notice stuff then move on. Photographers and other visual artists don't do that. We look really hard at stuff.
The longer that I go without taking a photograph the harder it is to get back into that way of seeing the world. With this in mind I try to get out at least once a week, camera in hand, and just wander around the local neighborhood and take some shots. Early Sunday morning is the best time because the light is good and people are very absent. It allows me to take my time and if I see something interesting, to look at it from many angles, and to try out different camera settings without feeling like a total idiot. (I am English and we tend to have a really low embarrassment threshold.) After I get home (usually at around 6AM at this time of year) I spend an hour or so selecting and editing shots. I use this time to test different ways of editing as this part of the process can make or break an image.
I like doing this around the town center where I live because most of the subject matter is fairly ordinary and this is important. It means that I can't cheat, I have to find the shot so to speak. It is not like photographing a beautiful scenic view which, at sunrise, will always look pretty good. This leads to an important concept. Very few photographers can just raise a camera and take a good shot. The scene has to be worked. I will usually take at least half a dozen shots of anything that happens to pique my interest.
This leads on to something else that I've discovered. If I am walking past something and find myself slowing down or stopping to take a closer look I get the camera out - even if I don't see any potential photograph at all. Usually some part of my brain is a step ahead of the conscious part and has seen the photo. All I have to do is find it. Nine times out of ten I get a photo where, initially, I hadn't seen anything at all.
As far as transport goes I will go out on my bike sometimes but I pedal very slowly. Once we move above a certain speed we cease to notice anything much at all about our surroundings. IIRC this speed is somewhere in the region of five miles an hour.
Photographs
All of these images were taken in the town where I live. All bar one was shot within three blocks of my home.
Assignments
Last Week's Assignment - Animals
This Week's Assignment - Local
Anything close to home. Try to notice ordinary things in the environment that could potentially make for a good photograph. Of course the photograph doesn't have to be taken specifically for this assignment.
Any treatment is fine - natural colors, black and white, heavily edited or straight out of the camera. It's all good.
Where to post images
I'll put up a new thread tomorrow, around noon ET, specifically for the uploading of photos relating to the assignment. If you want to post them here and/or on tomorrow's thread that is fine. Also feel free to post any other images of anything on either today's or tomorrow's threads. The assignments are purely optional - just something to get the creative juices flowing!
Finally
Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others.
-Jonathan Swift
This is an open thread so have at it. Post photos, questions, thoughts etc. - anything whatsoever to do with photography or anything at all for that matter.

I have a friend since HS, we are now over 60 (lol)
and her course sent her off to writing and later photography. Like lessons in both. She is currently being beautiful in France with 3rd husband and now into Dordonge, out of Paris and strikes. Photos back, I can't transmit without permission, but your first curvy ironwork is mirror of a public trash receptacle in Paris. Some instagram shots of food presentations there as well, I forgive.
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
heh - I love this line
In addition to photography I make some pennies as a copy editor and that line is destined to appear in a novel
apologies in advance.
Food shots on instagram - say it ain't so

So. FB.
I have two friends who do that. The other one, my first boyfriend, from another country, with a much younger skinny wife, once scientist, now model, actor and director. I blew it there.

Now that
is an impressive reume -thought my career progression was unusual.

Everyone is beautiful in France
My husband and I strolled along the Mediterranean shore in Sete so that he could ogle female breasts. I was in a one piece swim suit. There were women of the age I am now in bikini bottoms, letting it sag out. The Med was cold, went in up to my neck. To touch another body of water.

Wonderful inspiration
I'm going to try this, the pictures are wonderful and I am not a photographer but...going to give it a shot.

Looking forward to seeing the results.

Lovely shots Steve
The first one reminds me of Spain for some reason.
This is almost local (40 mins away).
Gëzuar!!
from a reasonably stable genius.
Isn't it wonderful when B&W is the way to go.
I now appreciate that with the iPhone. I took a photography class in college, all print from film. We did the old blueprint process, exposing to the sun. My best ones were vertical.

Thanks BR :)
The influence is definitely Spanish - the building is home to a Mediterranean restaurant so it all kind of makes sense.
I like this one - have a liking for anything that is black and white (as you've probably guessed) and anything with an industrial theme. I am working on getting access to one of the local steel mills - no luck yet though.

Funnily enough, it's a colour shot
The St. Croix River was in flood stage and the light was rather odd.

wow - there is literally
no color in the scene - even the cars are monochrome.
works very well either way.

OT — you have one of the most perceptive sig lines ever. n/t
Thanks
I think it cuts through all the BS - it also works on many levels both political and personal and I kind of like that.

A photo from where I was staying in March
Since my only home is my vehicle -- I have been 'residentially challenged' for more than 6 years. -- I'm posting a picture from where I was staying in March of this year:
"residentially challenged"
has its advantages. The variety of places and phenomena you must experience!
The light is beautiful, and the intimacy in the relationship between the cloud and the desert hills are also.
NO! It is only okay if it is by choice
It is not good if your best option is living in your vehicle.
I'm sorry I wasn't sensitive to your experience
Thank you for making me aware.
Hi Deegee - I married late
and literally the only thing that I miss is the ability to just up sticks and move on a whim. I miss the road.
Beautiful pic.

Local
On my front stoop.
On my back deck
In one of my cactus gardens
From my old house patio, a black & white in color. Veronica gave me the Ali photo. She was Ali`s ex-wife & a good friend of mine.
In another one of my cactus gardens.
A garden sculpture.
From that sculpture, I created this image with an old ashtray, made with an engine piston, some cigarette smoke & one of my poems.
Fire Watcher
This last one taken with a little penlight flashlight, painting the highlights during a milt-second exposure.
The story accompanying the image can be see here, at my photo blog.

Hi Knucklehead
the clarity of your photographs always amazes me. I really like the Ali/Liston Sports Illustrated one (by Neil Leifer - a superb photographer) with the Christmas lights. Really interesting shot of a really iconic photograph.

All the images I post are taken with a little point & shoot, just to prove a point.
This has been an ongoing image I`ve been working on for a few years.
It started as an image of a glass in the garden.
I removed the garden, & put it in the sky.
Then I decided to add a fish which I distorted to fit the optical requirements of seeing a fish in a wine glass.
I had some cloud shots I took yesterday & put the glass of fish into that.
Working with clouds that are ill defined, & glass with it`s transparent reflections are some of the more difficult manipulations I study with.

The irony of my post. It is with great sadness that I now just realize Ali died this day.
I also knew his two daughters, one ,Laila, who was also a boxer.
I`m already against the next war
I saw your goldfish
image earlier and meant to respond but got called away.
I didn't realize that Ali was close to death when I replied to your original post - when I found out I assumed that your photo was a tribute to him.
The most looked forward to sporting events in the very sports oriented household that I grew up in were Ali fights.
I remember seeing a really interesting TV documentary (IIRC) about Laila - bet she was really interesting in person.
BTW really like what you did with the goldfish - wish I had half of your skill with Photoshop

Must be wonderful, huh ...
to be surrounded by such beauty.
I will check out your blogspot.
Re those cactus shots: “Are you cereus?!”
https://www.desertusa.com/cactus/night-blooming-cereus.html
As longtime residents of Honolulu would know, the rock wall separating the lower campus of Punahou School from Wilder Avenue is known for its crown of night-blooming cereus.
Cactus
Yes, Dead Cereus
Here`s another one taken by flashlight lighting.
And another different cactus from another cactus garden of mine.
All the images I post are taken with a small point & shoot.

Again, a most delightful set.
I love your shots of that beautiful woodpecker.

Hi Boriscleto - wonderful shots as always
agree with KH - the woodpecker ones are great.

Welcome to the valley
I'm not a great photographer, but I live in a beautiful place. The first shot is from the brow of the mountain looking down in the valley
Here's our drive.
A fall walk up the mountain
and finally a spring filled pond
It is so nice to walk out the door and have nature right there to calm and awe. It is one of the most rewarding things in my life.
Steve, I always enjoy your photo essays!

BTW I think that you are way underselling yourself as a photographer. The 3rd one down of the woodlands is my favorite.

I am impressed
This thread is amazing. Thank you to everyone for sharing the beauty.
Thanks for the vote of support Darkmatter
FWIW I really look forward to putting this up and seeing what everyone else comes up with.
