Good morning 99percenters!
As promised, a tutorial on how to monitor comments here at c99p.

Monitoring Comments
I've seen it asked many times, "What's the best way to follow the comments here at c99p"? Well, there are several ways to accomplish it. They are as follows.

-------------------------------------------------

Using the "Content Stream" and "Comment Stream" links from the left sidebar menu.
This is the easiest and most proficient method once it's gotten used to. This is the technique I rely on as you can check the new comments with the click or two of the mouse. I'll go through it step by step.

-------------------------------------------------

1 - Click on the "Content Stream" link in the left sidebar menu and open the page. Bookmark the page for easy reference in the future. Here are easy instructions for making bookmarks for the major browsers. Use this bookmark whenever you want a quick check if there are any new comments in any of the essays. I named my bookmark "Stream" for easy reference.

2 - Now take a look at the "Content Stream" page. You'll notice four columns:

Content Stream
Column 1 - Contains the title of the essay and it's author.

Column 2 - Contains the replies to the essay. The black numeral represents the number of comments in that essay and below it the "new" comments will appear as a blue link, but only when there are new comments. If you click the "new" comment link it will take you directly to the new comment, if there are multiple "new" comments, clicking the link will take you to the first new comment and then scroll down to find the yellow "new" for the other new comments. If there are multiple comments for any given essay there is an easier way to view them rather than scroll down, I'll explain that below.

Column 3 - Contains the last post. It shows the user that made the last comment and the time the comment was made.

Column 4 - Contains a link to add a new comment to the essay, it's important to remember that it adds a comment to the essay and not the latest reply. A red "new' or "updated" will also display in this column when a new post is made.

Column 2 is where the action is, that's where all the new comments will be listed and linked to. If you haven't visited the site for a while and you open up the "Content Stream" page and there are many "new" comments in an essay it can be tedious to scroll down the comment section to find all the new comments, especially if there are many comment posts in the thread. There's a workaround that makes this easier:

Look to the top of the "Content Stream" page and you'll see a blue link "Go to: Comments". Clicking the link will take you to the "Comment Stream" page. The "Comment Stream" page lists all the comments that are made site wide in real time as they are submitted that makes it easy to see the new comments listed so you don't have to scroll down to find them. There are five columns on the "Comment Stream" page. They are as follows:

-------------------------------------------------

Comment Stream
Column 1 - Contains the title of the comment and the essay that the comment was made in.

Column 2 - Contains the author of the comment.

Column 3 - Contains the time the comment was made.

Column 4 - Contains a "Reply" link for making a reply to the specific comment.

Column 5 - Contains a link for making a comment to the essay.

At the top of the "Comment Stream" page you'll find a link to jump back to the Content page (Go to: Content) making for easy and fast access back and forth between the two.

Of course either of these two "Stream" pages can be used by themselves to monitor the comments, but I find it much easier to use them in conjunction. Actually, because I monitor the site so much, I mostly just use the "Content Stream" page.

-------------------------------------------------

Alternate ways to monitor comments.

1 - New comments can be monitored by watching the "Recent Comments" in the left sidebar and clicking on the link takes you directly to the comment.

2 - Comments can be monitored directly from the "Community Content" or "Front Page" by looking at the bottom of the essay listings, there will be a link that displays the total amount of comments in that essay and if clicked will take you to the first comment. A "New comment" link will appear when there are new comments in the essay that will also display the number of new comments, clicking this link will take you to the first new comment and then you'll need to scroll down the comment thread to find the other new comments that will be listed with a yellow "New" next to the heading.

3 - Comments can also be monitored by clicking on the "My Account" link in the header banner at the top of every page that takes you to your profile page. Click the "My Comment" link and you'll find all of your comments listed in the order they were made.

-------------------------------------------------

These systems are not as easy as the comment monitoring that Daily Kos uses and most of us are used to, but the "stream" technique comes close when you get used to it. Hopefully this fall/winter we can duplicate the DKos system when we implement the major site update.

it's really not as difficult as it may appear. If there's one thing that will make it easier, learn the first section, the "Content Stream" page, once you have that down pat then try the "Comment Stream", then you'll have it.

My best piece of advice is just try it and you'll get used to it.

Any questions? Fire away.

Many thanks for the tutorial JtC. It's really astonishing what you folks in the know about programing can do. It's much easier and faster for me to post a diary here than on Dkos. An automatic save as you type feature, option, might be helpful, if that's possible?
Moving slow this morning, off to read, now. Enjoy, a beautiful day here. Smile

in comparison to dailykos is the fact that you can upload images from your own hard drive and don't have to put it on flickr or something else.

Yes, I like it, if html is available, especially for table related stuff. I still have to figure out to resize file sizes of images before uploading them. But that's outside of this site. Just haven't done it. But at least I figured out how to resize and squeeze my own video footage to size and make it embed properly on youtube. I hope one day I will seriously work on video editing, I postponed it many, many times. Can't wait til Drupal comes out with an update to implement what you have in mind concerning comment threading.

I was a lot on the other site. Too much of a Bernie supporter to stay silent. I hope you don't mind. I always need to read here too to get "the right mix" of opinions. Smile

Have all a good weekend.

images directly from my hard drive, both there and here, all the time. There, just go to "Image Library," "My Images," and you should see an "Upload Files" button. Click on that, you should be able to browse your hard drive to your heart's content. Here, it's much the same, and you can resize the image upon uploading and just tell it to save the resized image as the new image. There, I resize my image after I embed it by changing the height and width codes. Actually, I usually take out the height code and change the width code; the height will adjust to keep the image in proportion. Hope this helps! And now, back to our regularly scheduled Website.

and I used it back then a couple of times, but remember that there was something about it I didn't like. But now I have forgotten what that was.
Is not good to forget everything ... but that's what's happening all the time to me. I liked very much citisven's dk photocoop, which they had before the Image library came up, but that one was too "slow" for them. Your tips help for sure and I will try one day the Image Library again. Thanks elenacarlena.

I don't write diaries there anyhow and don't see me writing them in the future, unless they are event photo diaries and even those I don't do anymore.
I can live with flickr, but it's always an extra step of work. Lazy butt I am ... Don't count on me for anything.

It's all up in the air what I might do. Smile

when you upload your image in the upload editor, look up at the top and you'll see a resize link, click it and resize to your preference. The maximum width for images is 500 pixels and max height is 800 pixels.

As you write your diary, selecting the "Save and continue" button will save the diary to your drafts in your user profile, hit the button as many times as needed.

"Religion is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich."--Napoleon

When we upgrade and revamp the site this fall/winter I expect we will have a fully functional system in place to follow user comments much in the manner that DKos uses. Hopefully the new version of Drupal will be completed and ready to install by then. If the new version doesn't solve it, we'll tackle it from another direction.

Yeah, I noticed that about the fancy gizmos, funny isn't it, and to think, this site was put together for free, go figure, no team of coders with a large budget layout. But to be fair to myself, it could have easily cost 4 or 5 thousand dollars to hire someone to develop this site, if not more. I put a substantial amount of time into it.

I think it's a mistake not to allow HTML, we have both, an editor with a handy toolbar and we allow HTML coding. But, I do understand the security implications of allowing users access to HTML, that's why there's the ability for admin to limit it, but not allowing all of it is just inconvenient IMHO.

I have been using it more to track comments. Between it and recent comments on the left, it does make it much easier. Thanks for the tip.

Yes, you do put a lot of time into this site. It would never have happened without you. I just got a kick out of the irony of it all.

what you put together here and all the things you write including the Weekend EB is major work.
If Bernie wins the election you charge $15.00 and hour of your work starting from the beginning. I know you don't like me saying that. But I hate it if volunteer work of professional skill level is not paid for one day. Like a Pro Bono Lawyer, they also get paid at least something.

Sigh. I think I talk like that because I am ashamed I don't produce something of value to this site or dailykos myself. Sorry 2

Rare admission of weakness

(AP) — In his first public address in a year, embattled Syrian President Bashar Assad vowed Sunday to win his country's long-running civil war while acknowledging his troops had lost territory because of a shortage of manpower....
Assad acknowledged that his generals have had to move forces from one front to another in order to protect areas that are militarily, politically or economically important. He added that the loss of some areas to insurgents has led to "frustration" among Syrians.

If it wasn't for Hezbollah, Assad probably would have lost by now.

The "bailout" just keeps getting worse.

Greek banks are set to keep broad cash controls in place for months, until fresh money arrives from Europe and with it a sweeping restructuring, officials believe.
Rehabilitating the country's banks poses a difficult question. Should the euro zone take a stake in the lenders, first requiring bondholders and even big depositors to shoulder a loss, or should the bill for fixing the banks instead be added to Greece's debt mountain?...
"We want, if possible, an initial amount to be ready for the first needs of the banks," said one official at the Greek finance ministry, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "That should be about 10 billion euros."
Others, including Germany, however, are lukewarm and could push for losses for large depositors with more than 100,000 euros on their accounts, or bondholders.
Imposing a loss, something the Greek government has repeatedly denied any planning for, would be controversial, not least because much of this money is held by small Greek companies rather than wealthy individuals.
"This is not like Cyprus where you can say these are just Russian oligarchs," said an insolvency lawyer familiar with Greece.
"It's the very community everyone is hoping will resuscitate Greece, namely the corporates. You'll end up depriving them of their cash."

Who would ever trust their money to a Greek bank again?

again after the crisis was over. It sounds like it's nothing they want. But I might keep my money out of German banks as a "thanks for effing, guys" little mini-revenge.

Not that I have any money to worry about!

I don't know anything about this blog, but the story is interesting.

Every student is given a "THREAT ASSESSMENT" by police and school administrators!

Schools and police are using V-STAG to assess a students threat level:

"The Virginia Student Threat Assessment Guidelines (V-STAG) is a school-based manualized process designed to help school administrators, mental health staff, and law enforcement officers assess and respond to threat incidents involving students in kindergarten through 12th grade and prevent student violence."

The war on terror is out of control! Watch out that kindergarten kid could be a threat!

Did you know, police are giving American addresses color coded threat ratings? And our govt. has also assigned you a threat assessment while travelling inside the U.S.

V-STAG was developed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Secret Service, and the U.S. Department of Education.

"Although both the FBI and Secret Service reports made a compelling case for student threat assessment, schools had no experience with this approach and there were many questions concerning the practical procedures that should be followed. In response, researchers at the University of Virginia developed a set of guidelines for school administrators to use in responding to a reported student threat of violence."

elenacarlena's picture

so probably OK. It looks like right now, a student has to act in a threatening or violent way before they are begun to be assessed. But of course assessors will probably go too far and things will probably be entered into records that should not be. Farther down it says that profiling and automatic responses are NOT good, so that's something. It sounds like something that might be OK with the proper safeguards, and checks and balances. Presumably a kindergartener having a temper tantrum would rate a very low threat compared to the same behavior in a teenager. Maybe it would prevent any more 6-year-olds from getting handcuffed and hauled off to the police station (that has already happened).

I think of it this way.
The reasoning why teenagers aren't prosecuted as adults is because they aren't considered rational, responsible people yet. That's why their criminal records are sealed at 18.

But we aren't even talking about teenagers. We are talking about kids that are six years old. Their personalities aren't even fully developed yet. It looks like a ticket toward over-reaction. "So you punched someone when you were six. That's why we are coming down hard on you from trespassing at 12."

And then, of course, who keeps these records? Are they secure? How are they going to be used? And what civil rights are we breaking by permanently monitoring these kids all of their lives?

If parents are pissed about common core and marching to get it deep sixed, wait till they get a load of this.

It is 100% positive it will be misused and abused and speed up the flow of the school to prison pipeline.

no, it wont be a big change in the format like DKos is doing, it will be an upgrade in the software with additional and improved features added to the core package. The next version, v.8, has been in development for about a year and should be released soon I hope. We are also looking at things like changing the name of the site, a new logo, and adding some new features. I'm sure we'll be asking for input from the membership also.

here's the headline from the International Business Times:

"Loretta Lynch Says Sandra Bland's Death Highlights Black Community's Concerns About Police"

and the link:

http://www.ibtimes.com/loretta-lynch-says-sandra-blands-death-highlights...

contains stuff like this:

“I think that it highlights the concern of many in the black community that a routine stop for many of the members of the black community is not handled with the same professionalism and courtesy that other people may get from the police.”

and

Lynch said Sunday that police departments also feel frustrated in these incidents. “I think they feel that they get the scrutiny...they get the complaints and the criticism, and they don't get the support,” she added.

with the payoff

Lynch went on to say the debate around Bland's death has inspired important discussions about training officers in how to de-escalate incidents. She has not opened a federal investigation into the case.

I'm so glad (he thought snarkily and angrily) that this administration is so big on important discussions. I know we must have had an important discussion on income inequality and government spying and now we'll have one on this. Great. Thanks, Obama administration, for thinking we can't see through the real message, which is "this is inconvenient for us but we'll act like we care while doing nothing about it."

I know it was a waste of time, but I engaged one of BLM people here on the GOS.
In the end he told me that:
a) Republicans are more openly racists, while white liberals are more destructively racist
b) that's impossible for a white person to not be racist
c) people of color "cannot be actively racist"

I find that interesting because it helps make sense why they protested Sanders...he's just another white man.

of more handy hints for monitoring comments.

I hardly ever see the Front Page or the Community Content pages anymore. By using the "Content Stream" bookmark I mostly just check for new content and comments by clicking on it. Once you get used to it, it really is a big time saver.

Folks ask: "How do I monitor the new comments in my essay, how do I know who made them, and how do I reply to them"?
Answer: By using the "Comment Stream". Open the Comment Stream page and you'll see all the comments relative to your essay, who made the comment, and also a handy link for making a reply to any individual comment. this comes close to duplicating the comment monitoring system at DKos.

Use these features until you get used to them, you wont regret it.

I just want to thank you for all the work you do here and for this great tutorial. I hope you will find a way to create a tab at the top marked "Tutorials" so that new users can easily access this tutorial and other ones that you may do in the future. It also allows those of us (like yours truly) who may forget how to do certain things here to easily find the tutorial we want.

I just want to say one other thing that I personally find so useful and that is the "Up" button that appears at the bottom right hand corner of the page. This is so wonderful in that I do not have to scroll to get back to the top of the page and it is one of my favorite little gizmos here.

Thanks again Johnny! Smile

Do I hear the sound of guillotines being constructed?

“Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable." ~ President John F. Kennedy

I'll put this in the FAQs, which are basically tutorials.

Here's a handy hint, I use this ALL the time: This Firefox extension contains many great shortcuts to add to your toolbar. There are blue "UP" and "Down" buttons that are arrow icons that you can add to your toolbar, that with one click you can very quickly go to the bottom or the top of any page. This is one of the handiest toolbar shortcuts I've ever found. There are many other great shortcuts also included in this extension.
