Programmed Learning

Editorial Note:
This article is partly a placeholder and partly an introduction to a structure I am developing for my Understanding Reality series of presentations. Caucus99Percent does not have (to my knowledge) a mechanism for me to simply upload HTML files without them appearing in the "Recent Essays" sidebar.

Just like teenagers now, I was subjected to a "modern" educational experience grounded in the current understanding of how we learn. For me it was in the 1960s and the new thing was Programmed Learning.
The materials at that time did not involve computers (in the way they do today), but I did learn a lot about programming. Reading a lot of science fiction (at a young age) I had developed a rather cynical point of view that thwarted the intent of the programming. As a consequence (or perhaps - As a compounding factor) I tended to learn the curriculum material "out of order", so I would often look askance at teachers when they would insist the answer key was correct when I knew full well they were not telling the whole truth. This insubordinate attitude marked me as a rebel, recalcitrant, or something that followed me throughout my life.
An aside for a technical note: The methods were implemented as questions and suggested answers on paper with if-then directives interspersed. Describing this mode of "education" is best accomplished by examining examples or reading how-to articles from that era. This is an Example "how-to" from 1987.
