Saturday Open Thread - 12/13/25: Odds and Ends

Good morning, good people! I hope everyone is doing well, and those of us that will experience freezing temps this weekend will take note of the 3 minute tutorial that LO brought to us in his WW last week. Now, just because the video features southerners saying and doing unusual freeze prep in your opinion, in our southern opinion, it is what my friends and neighbors are saying and doing right now in preparation for tomorrow night. I have been listening to them for days. In the office, in the grocery store, in the courthouse...
Refresher course below:
Well, I have come full circle in my career.
A couple asked me to represent them in the wife's post-divorce issue. I hadn't gotten my bar results yet, but my law professor agreed to take the case if I did all the work. He came to town and presented the case on my pleadings, my research, and right at the time of the judges ruling, I got the nod I had passed the bar exam, and could get sworn in.
This was in 1986. First client, first case, first win.
A few months ago, the husband hired me to probate his late wife's will, which I had drawn up for her in 2009. She died in 2013.
The glitch: In Texas, you have 4 years to probate a will. If not, you had better have a damn good reasons for the delay. I took the case. I asked about 6 or 7 probate attorneys if they had ever known of a will being approved 13 years after the fact, and they said I should forget it.
Well, I had 4 witnesses consisting of the client, the wife's daughters, and a prominent local businessman to try to convince the judge my client has cancer, has been in treatment for 13 years, and was in no shape to come to court until now.
At this point, I should mention my client and his late wife, and the two daughters, are black. The businessman is white. He is also a rancher, as is my client, and they have worked cattle together for decades, maybe 70 years. When I asked him if he thought the delay was due to negligence or ill health, he started crying, said "We thought he was going to die. Year after year."
There was not a dry eye in the courtroom. When the judge regained his composure, he ruled the will was accepted for probate and that the delay was due to extraordinary circumstances. Hugs and handshakes ensued.
Well, I could end it with my first client being my last client, but I drew up his will, and I need to be there for his kids to probate his will, don't I? Perhaps this is a new circle being drawn?
Retiring is in part, letting go and forgetting, moving on to something new. Really?
Well, it is your turn, friends, to share your info about whatever you think the rest of us might like to know.
This is an open thread, the perfect place to just let us in on your pearls of wisdom or warnings about being a goober, or any such odds and ends.

Good morning, friends!
Let 'er rip! And add any useful tips for tomorrow's 28 deg. low, such as how many pairs of socks you would recommend, and so forth...

Hey, good morning
.
As many socks as you can stuff in your shoes
would be my response. Hell, 28 degrees would be
a high here lately. We are seeing single digits.
A brother in south Florida has no source of heat except
for some kind of heater in the water bed. They are just not
set-up for lower temps. Wardrobe included. Me , I bundle-up
start another fire in the wood stove and basically grin and bear
it as having to go out and get stuff done. Life, ya know.
Of course, it is complicated by the fact that people are in this
panic mode regarding X-mas prep driven by the retail industry.
Fortunately, the errands are local, so by the time the heater warms-up
the cab in the pick-em-up truck, I'm back home in time to throw a
couple more logs on the fire.
Retirement is mostly a state of mind as opposed to a state of being.
If you can accept a change in priorities, the rest is just working out
the logistics. Good luck!

Good morning, Cap'n!
Wonder Bread socks!
My home and office are winterized. I have clothes I bought for a Christmas Market riverboat cruise down the Danube with 0 deg. temps at night. Thermal this, insulated that...
It is my community that is worried. Local plumbers are expecting big business just in time for Christmas shopping.
Of course, this is chili weather. It is like celebrating the occasion with just the right food.
I can't retire now. I am not mentally or emotionally ready to be without purpose.
As for the Dave Clark Five, we kids thought they might overtake The Beatles one day. Memories of 4th grade...
Have a great weekend, dear friend!

Monday AM we're headed to 18F
...but then we'll warm back into the 60's by mid-week. Don't like the weather? Wait 15 minutes.
I guess I'll run the well house heater Sunday night. Today we'll cover the cabbages, broccoli, and greens...first with a row cover then straw over that.
Congrats on the will! Hang in there counselor!
Stay warm friends. Thanks for the OT!

Good morning, LO!
2 days of cold temperatures, but by Thursday, forecast says highs of 78 deg. Tee shirt and shorts weather.
I actually thought that probate case would be a loser. Well, cancer proved to be a legally meritorious reason for delaying the process and extending the 4 yr limit to a 9 yr limit.
What kicked off my business was this man. The win 40 yrs ago was really a huge success, as it involved real estate. The opposing attorney was the county attorney and owner of a title company. And I beat him. People were lined up, coming to my home, as I had not found office space yet. I owe it to that one man and his deceased wife.
Well, protect your winter veggies for a day or so, and then let the sunshine in!
Enjoy your weekend, dear friend!

Winter? What winter?
We’ve been on the outside looking in on the arctic blasts. They’ve stayed just barely to the east of us, here south of Denver. So we had one little snow, but we’re looking at the next 10 days being in the 60s and dry as a bone. Extended Indian summer…
The weather is really chaotic right now. When winter finally comes, and it will, it is likely to be a doozy. We usually get all our serious cold in January, usually, and all our snow in March and April. We’ll see if that holds true this year.
Twice bitten, permanently shy.
Don't mind the cold
.
and the snow is kinda nice in smaller doses
extended periods of both become troublesome
shoveling, scraping windshields, thawing locks,
prying doors open, dead batteries gets a bit
cumbersome after a fashion. Develops character?

Good afternoon, ufs!
I just looked at a 10 day forecast for Walsenburg where our property is located. It will freeze tonight and Monday, no snow, highs in 50s and mid-60s. Snow will come sooner or later, and I will be happy to stay here in East Texas. The last time we went up there in December, the snow fell for a half day in Dalhart, Texas. None in NM or CO.
Well, stay warm and cozy as it will take very little effort, friend!
Enjoy your weekend!

Good morning otc, et. y'all. Talk about cold, it has
been sub 40 overnight all week which, as you might be aware, is California Freezing. For reasons related to my crazy youth, I have a rarely used Eddie Bauer Mountain parka which has a stated comfort range that tops oout at 40.
2 pair of socks, liner silk or poly) and those heavy duty winter hiking/camping sox hidden in the back of the closet. I have a shoebox full stashed with other high-sierra winter camping shit that I hope to never ever use again. There's some of those bloves with the 1.25 inch diameter little finger type fingers which, when zipped up, damn near immobilize your hands, also highly recommended.
Almost time to head to farmers' market, which means icy truck cab and wheel for the first 15 minutes, so I should be taking my own advice ;-).
Both Gavin Newsom and Ron DeSantis are challenging Trumps royal decree on state AI laws, which he has no authority to issue. Who knew they were buds? De Santis, however, will probably go along, while Newsom very well might not.
The Guardian tells me that, as expected:
There is no emergency to justify emergency poweers. The EU is descending very far into totalitariansism as the details underlying this move violate many treaties, including those which created the EU and those requiring a vote on continued retention of the freeze every 6 months, as well and one with Hungary giving it veto power in the matter. It's likely to also be a boost to de-dollarization and de-euroization as it is now clear that the EU has become totally lawless and funds invested or parked there are completely at-risk with no recourse. This is the biggest outright theft in world history.
be well and have a good one
That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --

Good afternoon, el!
The EU has become a crime syndicate. They know damn well Russia will not take this lying down. They know damn well that the Ukraine, if given any control of that money, will Hoover it into foreign banks and certain officials will move to The Riviera to live the good life. GB can count their blessings for Brexit. They at least have choice as to escalate into WWIII or not. Of course, Starmer could choose wisely. What country would ever invest in the EU after this theft?
Looks to me like internal conflicts, if not outright civil wars, may pop out in Europe over the actions of this crazy NGO. All my crazy warm clothes and accessories are because of travels there. I doubt I will ever travel there again.
While you warm up your cab, we are in full tee shirt/a/c mode here. Freeze panic comes tomorrow.
Enjoy your weekend, dear friend!

Ron DeSantis is full of merde as usual.
He's not capable of rational or honest thought/action. Hola otc! I see JtC is posting again. Hip-Hip-Hooray!!!!!!
Great news!!! Weather report for ECFL: 74 for the high, 50 for the low and sunny. It's been yoyoing back and forth pretty much the whole month. As far as frigid wear goes, I've got thermal underwear, leather jacket and liner, good high top shoes and socks. My Hubster is a retired biker (motorcyclist). We live in Floridumb, but during the biker years, we rode through cold areas including the German and Austrian Alps. My sympathies to all of you dealing with the the frigid weather. The ice is what always worried me. Everyone use your common sense. Stay safe, too! Rec'd!!
