~~ Raphael - School of Athens

“When we were little," the Mock Turtle went on at last, more calmly, though still sobbing a little now and then, "we went to school in the sea. The master was an old Turtle - we used to call him Tortoise -"
"Why did you call him Tortoise, if he wasn't one?" Alice asked.
"We called him Tortoise because he taught us," said the Mock Turtle angrily: "really you are very dull!”

In Edinburg. Never heard of Bob Geldof before.
A very upbeat Scottish folk tune nevertheless.

Thanks for the OT.

of the good ones (showing my early Gen Jones creds here...). In addition to his work with the Boomtown Rats, he was the primary organizer behind Live Aid and Farm Aid, a couple of the big UK charity festivals done in the 80s and 90s.

And he wrote this song, which really put the Boomtown Rats on the map, and is a favorite:

Just for the record, I don't like Mondays either. Shoot it down.
It doesn't actually matter to me what day of the week it is as they
are all the same in a sense when you have retired. The temperament
of the worker bees tends to be a bit sour is all. Thanks for posting the
song. Didn't Petty do that one?

@QMS

a true record-breaker in many ways, and cemented Geldof as a philanthropist for the ages- as well as putting him squarely on the right side of history. More background on the tune:

I don't think that Petty ever covered it- but I could be completely wrong on that one.

I honestly couldn't place it, but that crowd is something of a measure of his work, and that song is something else.

@QMS @QMS I remember Bob Geldof as an actor as well. He was Pink in the movie The Wall. A few years before Live Aid.

I am on my way to the office to pack up shit and empty it out. Weird "work day" at the office.
I disconnected the phone, so won't be interrupted by spammers worried about my Medicare plan.
Have a good one, friend, and thanks for the OT.

Thanks for the Raphael reference. I wasn't as familiar with his art as the other two greats. I took a look at the other "rooms" paintings at the wikipedia link. They are incredible, it would probably take some time, to learn the stories behind each painting. It's amazing that he could be so prolific during such a short life.

The status of teachers and education certainly needs to be elevated in the US. I heard a Korean American author Min Jin-lee author of a new novel Hagwon going on about this last night. A hagwon or hakwon as I have always called it is a Korean business model for education to supplement public education. The latter isn't adequate in competitive terms from an Asian perspective. These are basically after school hours tutoring for profit. Here, in the US the ongoing decline of basic education was alarming from her point of view. She emphasized that the most important teacher were the parents.

seemed like the perfect fit AND is public domain now. Glad you enjoyed your explorations of his work.

Our education system seems to have gone seriously downhill since I was a kid, but I worry that's just me being an old codger. Nonetheless, as once foreshadowed by Savio, it seems that students are now products to be spat out by an assembly line that is oriented toward producing various specific clones opf some prototypes.

part of Alice. Here's a musical adaptation of the next couple of stanzas, by one of my favorite drummers, Bill Bruford (of Yes, UK, King Crimson, and others). He put together a wonderful prog rock band with Allan Holdsworth, Jeff Berlin, and Dave Stewart (no, not that one, the other one). And one of the results of that collaboration was this tune (which also features his only vocal work ever recorded, to the best of my knowledge):
