Well here's the thesis of the joint letter, signed by more than 250 scientists, including one, Peter Kalmus, who was the main feature at tonight's People's Party Zoom meeting.

Only if policymakers begin to discuss this threat of societal collapse might we begin to reduce its likelihood, speed, severity, harm to the most vulnerable – and to nature.

Here in the United States we are ahead of the curve, with policymakers openly working to accelerate societal collapse. If the coronavirus pandemic doesn't get them, the evictions crisis will! Our political elites are only interested in the financial health of their billionaire backers, so don't look to them for anything.

The conclusion of this group letter is also illuminating:

Some of us believe that a transition to a new society may be possible.

Do I sense a dawning realization among the scientists that THIS society is not going to mitigate climate change and that a NEW society might be necessary toward that end?
