Another one of those public letters: We should do something about climate change.
Snoopydawg got there first to cover the confab with the civil rights leaders, so here it's my turn to cover this promising letter by scientists:
A warning on climate and the risk of societal collapse
It's also being echoed at Commondreams.org .
Well here's the thesis of the joint letter, signed by more than 250 scientists, including one, Peter Kalmus, who was the main feature at tonight's People's Party Zoom meeting.
Here's the main thesis of this group letter:
Only if policymakers begin to discuss this threat of societal collapse might we begin to reduce its likelihood, speed, severity, harm to the most vulnerable – and to nature.
Here in the United States we are ahead of the curve, with policymakers openly working to accelerate societal collapse. If the coronavirus pandemic doesn't get them, the evictions crisis will! Our political elites are only interested in the financial health of their billionaire backers, so don't look to them for anything.
The conclusion of this group letter is also illuminating:
Some of us believe that a transition to a new society may be possible.
Do I sense a dawning realization among the scientists that THIS society is not going to mitigate climate change and that a NEW society might be necessary toward that end?
'Cause that's what I've been arguing since I published this paper (Climate Change Mitigation in Fantasy and Reality). The password to open the PDF is: AddletonAP2009. The next step is to find the scientists, spit their words back out at them, and ask them: well, okay, can you flesh out some of the contours of this new society you envision, the one that might be capable of climate change mitigation?

In all actuality
it's the only choice.
The one we live in is not sustainable.
The haves will share or we perish together.
Remember the meek.
Regardless of the path in life I chose, I realize it's always forward, never straight.
Agreed, for the most part.
But about that Biblical prophecy; It seem highly improbable that the life form we call human can be seen as “the meek”. Perhaps the “inheritors” of the Earth will be durable conflict avoiding scavengers that are good at turning organic life byproducts into soil enriching nutrients that support the plant kingdom. Cockroaches come to mind. Fungi also come to mind. Humans, not so much.
It is a distinctly hubristic and defining characteristic of the human species that has them seeing themselves as the “be-all and end-all” of all life forms on this Earth. Enough of that nonsense! We are one of many, all interdependently sharing this thin skinned web of life on a tiny planet. We need to get real about our place in the universe, before God's wrath rains down on us.

Shoplifting's up, folks.

Soon there won't be enough space in the prisons for the shoplifters.

More blows to already grievously-wounded brick-and-mortar retail
I wonder at what point “grievously wounded” will become “mortally wounded”? Who even wants the hassle of trying to maintain an actual physical store as a business model anymore?

As long as societal collapse
is slow enough to be managed, there will be profits to be made. After that.... are there no prisons, armed guards and electric fences? Like Israel, for any group we don't like just keep pushing the surplus population out and building walls, checkpoints and enclaves until they're totally corralled. Then the fun begins.
You'd think the scientists --

Yes, true
Use it up then leave

I've seen lots of changes. What doesn't change is people. Same old hairless apes.
