Monday Open Thread; August 14 is Social Security's Birthday
August 14 is the 226th day of the year. There are 139 days left.
Today's number is 14
14 is the product of 2 primes, 7 and 2
Alrighty. If 14 = 7 x 2, then x/14 = x/(7x2). As we learned in last Monday's Open Thread, fractions of the form x/7 where x is a whole number not a multiple of 7 or 999,999 have an interesting property. For any even numerator x, x/14 will factor down to (x/2)/7, so even fractions of the form x/14 have the same interesting property. Interestingly enough, heh, for odd numerators, x/14 has a variant of that property.
Briefly, the fractional part of x/7 is the number sequence 142857 repeated endlessly in that order from a varying but determinable starting point within that series. Thus 1/7 = 0.142857142857..., 2/7 = 0.2857142857..., 3/7 = 0.42857142857..., etc. 2/14 = 1/7 = 0.142857, etc. When x/14 has an odd numerator, the 142857 repeat kicks in, but not necessarily in mid series as it does with x/7. Instead, 1/14, for example = 0.071428571... and 3/14 = 0.214285714..., 5/14 = 0.357142857... etc.
14 is the atomic number of silicon

On August 19, Caesar Augustus died. He was succeeded by Tiberius on September 18. He was also declared to be a god, but I don't know the date. Being a god was easier then - just die with a lot of fans. Augustus' grandson, Postumus Agrippa, was slain by his own guards on August 20, but that isn't why he was named Posthumus.

Hey, EL. Good morning. Happy Monday. I can do only a fly by
right now as I have some appointments, but I must come back and at least listen to the masochism ditty.
Thanks for getting back on the routine of mentioning the consulships again. I was feeling bereft. Not to objectify, but, trust me, Claudia Pulchra was one of the Beauties.
Good morning, Henry. The consulships are part of my Monday
OT. They are not included, as of yet, in my Sunday OT, because it evolved into a very different format. You may rest assured that they will always be there on Monday.
Yes, do indeed partake of the Masochism Tango, and thanks for reading.

Thanks, EL. I was not sufficiently discerning to note
the difference in format. I'll try to be more observant.
BTW, on the off chance that you did not know, "pulchra" is Latin for "beautiful." So, Claudia was literally one of the Beautifuls. Neat surname!
good morning el and all
I say hooray for social security! You know the blue ridge parkway was the trading piece. Keep the parkway entirely in NC (and not a mile in TN), and we'll see the bill passes.

Hope you all have a good one!

Good morning, Lookout. I was unaware of that bit of
history regarding social security. Thanks for the info and thanks for reading.

Good morning, Arrow. Ain't she pretty. One of my faves is the
57 Testa Rossa Mille Miglia (painted other than red damn it)
Have a good day and a fun and safe trip

A truth of the nuclear age/climate change: we can no longer have endless war and survive on this planet. Oh sh*t.

No link to breitbart, the other orange site. Did he say it or should I kill the messenger? I don't know. Rip it to shreds.

Good morning, eyo. I love merkins whining about China
"cheating" at capitalism. Bwahahaha.

Wouldn't 14 night be called a fortday?
Not sure since that isn't my forte. (OK, I pronounce it correctly, so the pun didn't really work)
There is no such thing as TMI. It can always be held in reserve for extortion.
Good morning, Feesh. I think there is a certain
symmetry to Fortday, though for many, it is simply a Payperiod. Ah well. Thanks for reading.

Good morning, el ~~
We begin another week in the good ol' usofa. What will this week bring. There are endless surprises. We just need to be prepared and not caught off-guard. I think most of us at c99 are living in reality, though.
Thanks for Roy Buchanan - I really enjoy his music.
Have a beautiful day, everyone!

Good morning, RA. Thanks for reading and have a good one.
Whatever surprises the day coughs up, I'm as ready as my funds and attention span will let me be. Worry is not my strong suit.

Claudia Pulchra (partial namesake)--yes, Pulchra it is!
third wife consequentially or longitudinally? All at once or Henri VIII-style? I am getting into Latinate history.
Did anyone else grow up reading Beowulf on the LR sofa? Along with SMSG math? TLTR series was mine alone.
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
Good morning, riverlover. SMSG math does ring a bell,
but I think I read my Beowulf in a chair or in bed, my brother hogged the sofa. Hadn't thought of SMSG in ages, and not at all sure how many years we used it.
Thanks for reading.

Hey! I read your MT aloud to jakkalbessie as she
drives us across the great expanse of eastern NM. She loves that sort of stuff! Thanks!
Just saw some pronghorn antelope ! Always a bonus ! Beautiful blue sky with awesome clouds as well.
We have not been home in Santa Fe since January so really looking forward to being back in 'The City Different.' On the 14th, no less!
Seen this?

Hey you two, good evening. I've been out since 10 something.
Glad you enjoyed the OT. Thanks for the comparison chart.
