Wisconsin Sentinel: Clinton's abysmal disregard for govt. open disqualifies her from public office

Hi Everyone. I'm cross-posting this from Daily Kos but this is my first post here so please be patient while I learn the formatting instructions. I'm gong to have to retrieve the link codes in a second pass but I hope people can start with this. HD

In a surprising development, the Milwaukee Wisconsin Journal Sentinel has just published an editorial challenging Hillary Clinton's qualifications to be our next president. I’ve doubled checked that this appears to be a reputable newspaper. If it is not I will take this down. This story may be highly upsetting to many so I’ve taken care to try to stick to the facts and figure out what is going on here. I’ve kept any opinions of my own out of this report although I am a Bernie Sanders supporter. But also a Democrat who will fully support our Party’s nominee which seems likely to be Hillary Clinton in November.

Noting that in a democracy that openness and honesty is the “foundational building block of the republic" an editorial in the Wisconsin Journal, entitled Clinton's abysmal record on open government questions Hillary Clinton’s suitability to be president.

As we noted Tuesday, Republican front-runner Donald Trump is not one of those candidates. But neither is Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton. Her horrible track record on transparency raises serious concerns for open government under a Clinton administration — so serious we believe they may disqualify her from public office. We hope Wisconsin voters give this issue the consideration it deserves when they go to the polls on Tuesday.

In addition, regardless of Clinton's excuses, the only believable reason for the private server in her basement was to keep her emails out of the public eye by willfully avoiding freedom of information laws. No president, no secretary of state, no public official at any level is above the law. She chose to ignore it, and must face the consequences.

The Wisconsin Journal quotes from this Sunday’s Washington Post article by Robert O'Harrow Jr. which reported that Clinton and her aides continued to use their Blackberries for State Department work even after being warned by the NSA not to.

"Throughout, they paid insufficient attention to laws and regulations governing the handling of classified material and the preservation of government records, interviews and documents show. They also neglected repeated warnings about the security of the BlackBerry while Clinton and her closest aides took obvious security risks in using the basement server."

The Journal also refers to a series of devastating revelations from the conservative Judicial Watch which received a favorable ruling from U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan, in their Freedom of Information Act suit, who stunned observers by granting Judicial Watch a highly unusual limited right of discovery to depose current and former members of the State Department including most of Clinton’s immediate staff.

legitimate questions have been raised about whether Clinton's staff was trying to help her to sidestep the Freedom of Information Act.

"We're talking about a Cabinet-level official who was accommodated by the government for reasons unknown to the public," Sullivan said. "And I think that's a fair statement: For reasons heretofore unknown to the public. And all the public can do is speculate."

"This is all about the public's right to know," Sullivan added.

This is just one of dozens of Freedom of Information Act suits Judicial Watch has before the courts. They are also suing to have the draft indictment from two decades ago that was dropped made public. You may remember Judicial Watch as “central headquarters” of the “vast right wing conspiracy” that has been hounding Clinton since the days of WhiteWater. They are now $20 million/year institute with over 400,000 supporters who have been waiting to oppose HIllary Clinton for most of their adult lifetimes.

The Journal notes Clinton has a long, well established pattern of behavior of trying to evade public disclosures citing five examples discussed last year by Pro Publica, as well as her refusal to release the transcripts of her speeches to banks citing the The New York Times:

"Voters have every right to know what Mrs. Clinton told these groups.... By refusing to release them all, especially the bank speeches, Mrs. Clinton fuels speculation about why she's stonewalling," the Times editorial said.

In closing the Journal asks voters to think long and hard.

Clinton has a long track record of public service but an equally long record of obfuscation, secrecy and working in the shadows to boost her power and further her ambition. We encourage voters to think long and hard about that record when choosing the next president.

A fair question for ourselves is “should we be paying any attention at all to these kinds of developments that are negative for our candidates?” As I noted here last week, we will pay a high price if we create for ourselves an intentional blind spot about negative news.

We need to discuss and better understand the details of such stories so we can use our collective intelligence to develop our best responses. When there are errors our internal experts can correct them and educate the rest of us on how best to respond when our right-wing friends bludgeon us over the heads with these developments in social gatherings.

I ask readers to adhere to the highest level of restraint and respect for other commenters. We are all on the same team here. We also have to acknowledge that while anything is possible, as of this moment, the numbers suggest that Hillary Clinton may very well be our nominee in the general election. We all should be focused on learning what the facts are so we best know how to manage this situation for the best of the Democratic Party.

This comment section should be equally safe for Clinton and Sanders supporters.

Please no gratuitous name calling. For example, instead of calling an adversary an “blithering idiot” try instead saying “someone with tremendous opportunities for learning and self-improvement.”

Yes, the cut an paste was a disaster so I had two copies which I edited down on a super slow computer paragraph by paragraph. Not realizing that the save and continue button appears to be the publish button.

Very confusing to me. Perhaps at some point those responsible for the format of c99p could substitute post or publish. More in line with standard practice on the web.

that could be saved in the FAQs. When I first start, there is a link called "save as draft". If I do that FIRST, I do not publish until I tell it too. If I hit save and continue, then I publish too. I'm not sure I know what I'm doing. Hopefully JtC will clarify for all of us. (Watch me post this and find his explanation two comments down.)

As noted at the reddit subthread where info about this story was posted, transparency is not a Clinton's friend, in public service or private philanthropy.

Experience is not synonymous with judgment; age is not synonymous with wisdom; public office is not synonymous with public service (or regard for the public or its right to know).

references to "our party" and "our nominee" are inappropriate. Here at C99, you should not assume that you are addressing only Democrats. Many of us are Independent Progressives or Independent Socialists, or Greens, etc. C99 is not a Democratic Party blog.

That said, I found your article very well written and quite interesting.

I may be mistaken, but I think the Milwaukee Wisconsin Journal Sentinel has supported Scott Walker in the past. Of course, that doesn't mean that they can't also be correct about Hillary in this article.

Thanks for the information and taking the time to cross post. Some of us have cut ties, and when I see how you had to couch and frame and pad your good content with "please be nice" to appease the mob, it brings back bad memories. Don't miss the eggshells. Don't miss the contortions of speech. So happy to be able to speak my mind here at c99. Please continue to post here, you'll find it, well, easier.

HRC and crew deserve criticism on the unsecured private server and Blackberry because it was done above the law and to avoid accountability in their duties as public servants. The public should question it. HRC supporters should question it, too. It looks bad and smells bad no matter how much they look down their noses when it is brought up.

but liked your article!

Free your writing, let go of pre-apologizing for disseminating "upsetting" information. Pffft and tosh, kind sir!

Let's write for HERE and if they are lucky, cross-post there, although I wouldn't bother. I put a funny twitter diary up there just for fun (well, it was fun), but I've got a sneaking suspicion it will be the end of it.

Letting go of dKos is harder than letting go of that fucking hot, whip-smart, funny boyfriend who drove a lime green Chevy Nova circa 1972 but who was also emotionally abusive and had the heart of a lizard.

What I'm trying to say, I know it's hard to let go. But please set yourself free and write for US and don't bend over backwards trying to preappease your critics.

With commiseration, peace and infinite hound dog love,

Feel free to say what you really think--and phrase it however you like. The ability to breathe here is a daily relief.

And while I appreciate the writing and the information, the D party is not my party and she is not my candidate, regardless of whether she gets the nomination. Not voting for her, not defending her. Ever.

I quite agree with the Sentinel's editorial as well as your assessment.

You do need two spelling edits in this paragraph - use citing instead of siting (the latter is a location, not cite which references someone else's writing).

The Journal notes Clinton has a long, well established pattern of behavior of trying to evade public disclosures siting five examples discussed last year by Pro Publica, as well as her refusal to release the transcripts of her speeches to banks siting the The New York Times.

I just spent two hours editing out a duplicate cut and paste job and a tiny slow computer in screen. I could have rewritten more quickly.

I'm going to have to consider this one as breaking the ice.

JtC says it is easier to post her and then copy and paste to dkos then vice versa. Many of the folks here removed there diaries from dkos to another server and had a hell of a time with cut and paste. Something to do withdkos5, but the transfer to here and other places was smoother when it was dkos4.

I feel you 100%.

Democrats, Republicans, six of one, half a dozen of the other.

People forget that our government is for US, and BY us, and why have we surrendered our agency to these fucking, greedy warpigs??

WHY?

Were we brainwashed? Why are some of us not brainwashed? Why does it seem like more people are starting to get an inkling? This who populist movement ... it's a stirring for some, and a strong conviction for many.

The Trumpeters and the haters feel the stirring but they are too filled with hatred to want a move toward a more cooperative and less authoritative and top-down style of government. Because that would mean everyone was equal, and they might have to actually LIVE UP to that equality if you know what I mean. Let tRump have 'em!

But there are a lot of conservatives out there who feel the same way about the Republican party that we do about Democrats. It's embarrassing. My association has always been tenuous, a relationship of need, if you will. But I have not "identified" as a Democrat since Clinton, except for briefly in late 2007 through early 2009.

Some people have been "members" of the Democratic party their whole lives and feel it is part of them. But they have also been members of the 99% their whole lives as well. Most of us have, in fact, I'd guess that about 99% of us have. (But please, check my math.)

Peace!

Thank you for crossposting, HoundDog, much appreciated. I doubt this will be well received over in the other place, but you're safe here.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has generally a right-wing bend, which probably explains why this editorial appeared there. Not that it's wrong; HRC's lack of transparency is something the right and the left (at least those to the left of her) agree on. I am glad to see some more attention paid to her avoidance of FOIA requests, which for me is the accusation that has definite legs (while we can just guess at national security violations).

They continue to make bad decisions and I think a lot of it has to do with a haughty sense of entitlement. They feel like they are owed everything. I'll be glad when we are done with the Clintons for good. Maybe this email thing will put her into the annals (anus) of history but I suppose if her presidential aspirations were finished there would always be MSNBC.

At one time the Milwaukee Journal was a great liberal late afternoon paper. It then merged with its morning paper the Milwaukee Sentinel, which was a right wing paper. The Sentinel was feisty and exposed many local scandals. The Journal focused on statewide and national issues. The two papers merged and it was downhill from there. They fired many of their liberal writers and shifted to the right editorially and became a morning only paper.

They have also have bought up many of the twice weekly suburban papers nearby. More right wing slant has resulted. They endorsed Scott Walker three times for governor and before that County Executive. This editorial has the footprints of Christian Schneider by its tone.

The Journal-Sentinel has been purchased by Gannett and will further decline.

Considering what has happened to Wisconsin, is it any wonder that the papers there are RW? Their leader, Gov. Scott "Koch-puppet" Walker, and all the damage he has done? But I see Hillary as little better than a Rep anyway imho.
