What Will You Tell Them?
What will you tell the "Democrats"? If there’s still enough time, if it’s not too late, if you haven’t given up, if you can find the words, if you haven’t run out of words, if you haven’t been silenced, banned, or sent into exile because progressives are obviously to blame for this latest election fiasco, because too many admirers of the "Democratic Party" don’t want to hear the truth, don’t want to deal with it, can’t bear to look at it, won’t acknowledge it because the "Democrats" are their last refuge, their final sanctuary, the only source of hope they have left in this betrayed wreck of a country.
How many times do Obamabots and Hillbots and the NextHackbots need to see the "Democrats" stumble down the side of every Misty Midnight Mountain in sight before those people realize that perpetual idiocy is not a solution, before they finally understand that the "Democrats" are just plunging us deeper into the Valley of Corruption, where greed reigns and progressives are slandered as irrational, irrelevant, and irresponsible. It shouldn’t be so hard for them to figure out why these clusterfucks keep happening, but they lost their minds somewhere along the way and can't think at all anymore.
They shouldn't have to walk and crawl on six crooked highways for the rest of their lives to know where we’ve been and where we’re going next, an IQ of 50 and two functioning eyes are all that’s necessary to confirm that those crooked highways the "Democrats" keep taking us down are just an endless corporate tollway to nowhere and that it’s our job to keep paying for the trip.
They shouldn't have to step in the middle of seven sad forests to see the darkness closing in all around us, they shouldn't have to stand on the shores of a dozen dead oceans to know that time is running out. If they haven’t seen enough yet, how much more do they need to see?
[video:https://youtu.be/KbQlPyLfhJ0 width:500 height:333]
America is heading ten-thousand miles into the mouth of a graveyard. Bernie's campaign was a newborn baby with wild wolves all around it, and they ripped it to shreds. Economic recovery is a highway of fake diamonds with nobody on it, American foreign policy is a black branch with blood that keeps dripping, the Pentagon is full of men with their hammers a-bleeding, the DNC and the "Democrats" and the corporate media are ten thousand talkers whose tongues are all broken.
They must be fucking deaf if they can’t hear the sound of that thunder as it roars out a warning, if they can’t hear the roar of that wave that’ll drown the whole world, if they can’t hear the Drummers of Orwell whose hands are a-blazing. I’ve heard them, you've heard them, we’ve all heard them. It’s raining, "Democrats". It’s raining hard, it’s going to keep raining hard, it's a downpour, it's a deluge, the whole country is drenched and drowning, the thunder is deafening, the lightning will strike, Karma is coming and you will reap what you’ve sown.
In the wilderness of progressive websites, I met a young child beside a dead pony, I met a white man who walked a black dog, I met a young man who was wounded in love, I met another man who was wounded in hatred, I left Daily Kos as the bridges were burning and never looked back as the flames lit the night.
I’ve read the words of so many people who are hurting, who’ve never made a recommended list and never will. I’ve heard the song of a poet who’ll die in the gutter, I'm in love with a woman who gave me a rainbow. That rainbow keeps me going. It’s the only thing that keeps me going.
We’re all going to need a rainbow, a rainbow of truth to guide us as we walk through the depths of this deepest dark forest, where the people are many and their hands are all empty, where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters, where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison, where the executioner’s face is always well hidden.
2008?
2012?
2016?
It doesn't matter who ran or who won, because it's the same executioner, different hood. Same sentence, different judge. Same Beltway, different slogans. Same lies, different liars. Same wars, different victims.
Meet the future, same as the past.
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
You won’t need a map, we’ve been here before, where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten, where black is the color, where none is the number, where every election is just picking your poison, where betrayal reigns, where democracy is null and void, where the clusterfuck never ends, where change never begins, where hope goes to die and those Beltway bastards all bury it.
Tell the damn truth about the "Democrats".
Tell the truth about their corruption, their hypocrisy, their deceit, tell the truth about their mindless post-election finger-pointing at Bernie and Jill, at progressives and Wikileaks and "Russian hackers".
Tell the truth about that travesty that calls itself the "Democratic Party", tell the truth about every corporate hack in it.
THE TRUTH. Tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it.
And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it.

When the "Democrats" were the opposition party during the

I'm relieved Hillary lost, but this country was going to be in a world of hurt either way.

I say to the Democrats
We are the sun that will pierce through their rain, shining on truth, creating rainbows and beacons of hope, nurturing the seeds for future generations. They will never be able to take what sustains us - our light, our words, our love.
Thank you for your Truth, Rusty.
We'll say it together, Phoeline.
For as long as it takes.
I clicked on your book link
And I've really enjoyed what I've read so far!
Thank you, Phoeline!
I really appreciate your interest in my book.
You have the collective fantasy about politics --
which divides politics into "issues" with "stands," and then you have actual policy, which favors a specific stand called "neoliberalism."
Democrats are caught up in the collective fantasy, while the consequences of actual policy continue to evade their gaze.
The ruling classes need an extra party to make the rest of us feel as if we participate in democracy. That's what the Democrats are for. They make the US more durable than the Soviet Union was.
It's hard to see anything when you've been in the gutter for
30 years. They must like it there though, I don't see any indication that they're going to crawl out of it.
Nice work, Rusty.
Inspired.
Thank you, OPOL.
I hope you had a great birthday!
Yes, but...
Perhaps the other side did cheat, but how many votes do you think that changed?
We managed to loose against an incompetent candidate.
We managed to loose against an incompetent candidate.
Think about how ugly this election could have been if a mainstream republican had been running!
What are WE going to do better?
How are we going to adjust our message? How are we going to act differently between elections? How or why are these changes going to effect the needed change?
What is the change the real voting masses are looking for? A party of the 99% needs to represent the wants and needs of the general population.
Hillary managed to lose to the worst candidate in American
political history.
Bernie would have won in a landslide. He was offering what the real voting masses were looking for, but he was sabotaged in the primaries by the DNC and the Democratic establishment.
Progressives will do better when they wash their hands of the "Democratic Party" and establish a party of the working class which will draw the support of blue collar conservatives.
As far as I can tell, this is the only truth there is.
The hearts and minds of the People is such a simple thing.
Everyone can see it. Anyone can use it.
Bernie Sanders used it. He was the only one who did. More than 90 percent of Americans had never heard his name before; had no idea who he was when he began his official campaign. Within months he ignited the nation into a fast moving fire.
Anyone is free to use it. But nobody does. In the end, even Bernie stopped.
Rusty this is true. But don't you see they can't get there from here? It is structurally impossible under the current system of government to "establish a party of the working class" to challenge the Establishment.
Personally, I recommend that the Established government is destroyed, first, through the artful use of voters coalitions that turn their elections into impossible shambles of dysfunctional and stupid winners who cannot work together.
At that point, the coalitions come together and rise as the Party of the Hearts and Minds of Americans. They force the defeated Establishment to lift them into power before the Establishment is exiled into nothingness.
I will only vote for the Hearts and Minds Party. That's a promise I made to myself when I was thirteen years old. I could see clearly then.
Another inspiring essay. Love your book, too.
What you're recommending seems to be the only solution, Pluto.
In 2016 the people proved it can work.
Twice.

the united states of america, the nation our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal, is over.
this is a nation of the oligarchs, by the oligarchs and for the oligarchs.
the institutions of this nation are captive to wealthy, powerful interests and control will not be ceded to the people by means of elections or normal representative power.
there is only one constitutional possibility left to the people to reclaim their government.
the institutions of government must be swept clean of the oligarchs and their sycophants at one fell swoop, the rules changed to promote real equality amongst citizens and new institutions founded and set in motion.
the best means for this is probably a constitutional convention that is embarked upon after an adequate, supportable document has gained the assent of the vast majority of citizens and is then by democratic process adopted.
if the government of the oligarchs cannot be replaced, we shall have to await either the natural decline of empire, or the inevitable environmental disaster that the oligarchs' capitalist economic "order" will have wrought.
I hope a new constitutional convention succeeds, but it's
hard for me to be optimistic about that, or about any electoral solution. I'm afraid this country is heading toward violent social unrest within the next few years, and once it begins it's going to escalate, and there's no way to know what form of government will emerge amidst the violence and chaos.
I see a bad moon rising, I see trouble on the way.
Not So Fast!
A Constitutional Convention allows corporatism to become enshrined in the ultimate law of this nation and could not be revoke without a revolution. There is no way We the People could prevent corporatist agents from taking control and twisting everything we hope for against us.
Be careful what you wish for.

The brain is the only organ that continues to evolve

Yeah. I have actively test marketed that for the past fifteen years. No secret there. I am sad to report that the brains of Americans have de-evolved on that issue. They fall to the floor and dissolve into a blob of whimpering ectoplasm at the mere mention of writing their own constitution, while all they have left is a slave-owner's abomination that they clutch and worship from a place of profound stupor.

Thank you rusty. I so much enjoy your weaving of Dylan’s arresting lyrics, with the sentiments of the heart, in its urgency of now.

I am sometimes frustrated by Dylan's withholding of his work from you tube, but he is so forgivable ; ).
Love Tim Obrien
If I were a pro musician I'd be Tim O'Brien.
Thank you for the poetry and the music, janis b.
That's a great cover of one of my favorite Dylan songs.
I don't think it's Dylan personally doing this
withholding of his tunes. Shah my husband was in the music business in the 70's- 80's in a small way. The publishing/recording rights and all that jazz are traded among the giant transnational entertainment biggies like Sony, just like every other 'market' commodity. Who owns his recordings or songs? God know but there doing it again. For some reason The Beatles tunes come and go on You Tube. Paul McCartney bought all of Buddy Holly's songs. Like stocks they can be bought and sold. Intellectual property belongs to whoever has the bucks to buy it and sell it. YouTube is now owned by Google and Yahoo. I'm not a lawyer so I don't know the legal ins and outs of this but it seems to be subject to complex legal business dealings. For instance there are a lot of videos on Youtube that will not play here, I get a screen that says were sorry but you can't see this as you live in the US. On the other hand maybe Dylan did pull them off you tube.
We have the technology, we should move to where artists own

We DID Tell Them
And rejected their treasonous Neoliberalism. Now we've got to organize at the local level, fight like hell, get behind NODAPL and Black Lives Matter and New Congress and environmental groups and community gardens and Tulsi Gabbard and Keith Ellison and Nina Turner (there's a move to get her to run for Governor in Ohio) and Seth Moulton (who was part of the mini-rebellion in the House of Reps that sought to deny "nothing wrong here," living dead Pelosi her Minority Leader status) and run for office ourselves on Boards of Selectmen, School Committees, state legislatures, etc.
By the way, Christopher Lydon had a great show on this evening (Radio Open Source) with the sobering title Post Democracy in America. I especially loved his third guest, Harvard Law Prof Umberto Unger (once a teacher/mentor of Obama, and who later became one of his (Obama's) most vociferous critics-- he says in the interview that Obama "never struck him as anyone who wanted to change things"-- and who thinks, like many of us, that the outcome of the election, horrific as it may be, is not as horrific as it might have been had HER won). I really enjoyed what he had to say, and I think many here will as well. The link on the Open Source page for tonight's show (again, the show is entitled Post Democracy in America) isn't quite working yet, but should soon.

An excellent post, Fionnsboy. Thank you.
Get behind Black Lives Matter ?
They are the ENEMY! They are the people that tried to shut Bernie Sanders up. They are the people that oppose Social Security. I'd go out and work for TRUMP before I'd support those Hillary-lovers.
I've seen lots of changes. What doesn't change is people. Same old hairless apes.
No they aren't and no they didn't.
That commentor is seriously lost on this blog.
As lost as it's possible to be.
This is clearly snark, right? BLM is the "enemy"??
"Because" they tried to shut Bernie, specifically, down? I guess you don't understand activism and protest. That's the whole point. To #ShutItDown. They did the same to HRC and at Trump rallies, when his rally in Detroit or Cleveland (can't remember which) was led by an alliance of Bernie and #BLM protesters. Bernie was awkward at first to that incident, and to his credit stepped up his game to actively seek and allow more participation in his campaign.
As a white person in solidarity, I participated in many #BLM actions all over NYC, attended plenary panels of educators and activists and attended a #BLM activist-only discussion.
Let me tell you firsthand: these folks get it, on every level. Especially that the cross-section of racism and economic inequality is the problem, and that's where the focus is, on boycotts, challenging the justice/penal system and the prison industrial complex along with the Wall St hostile takeover of their neighborhoods through Real Estate monopoly and Money In Politics allowing it all to happen.
I'll never forget hearing a prominent activist from St Louis, speaking on a panel in the basement of a Brooklyn apartment building packed with young POC activists, say quite explicitly: "This is not the new Civil Rights Movement; it's the Oppressed People's Movement." That's a much bigger potential coalition. If you look at any of the protests you'll invariably find Fight for 15 folks, Occupy peeps and LGBT activists, all aligned.
I've said it may times, Occupy Wall St and BlackLivesMatter will be the salvation of the Democratic Party, or it will devolve into irrelevance.
"If I should ever die, God forbid, let this be my epitaph:
THE ONLY PROOF HE NEEDED
FOR THE EXISTENCE OF GOD

Not precisely how I remember it.
For a little less than a month, BLM absolutely acted like they were part of Hillary 2016. That much is true. They created the #BernieSoBlack hashtag, or, more likely, disseminated it--my guess is that it was created in some DC consultant's office. They came down on Sanders and Martin O'Malley, and, for at least 3 weeks, treated Hillary and the Repubs with kid gloves. It wasn't until an Atlanta protest, where the BLM folks started singing over Hillary's speech, that things started to turn around, and later Hillary got some of the same treatment as Bernie--mainly with that one young woman getting into Hillary's fundraiser with her "superpredator" comment written on a banner.
The idea that Bernie & his campaign were racist was initially promulgated through BLM, and it was done at a time when they were not criticizing Hillary at all. Only the people supposedly to the left of her. And at that time, Hillary was an "All Lives Matter" type of candidate. She didn't switch to being "Black Lives Matter" until after the attack on Bernie. That's to say nothing of the dramatic contrast between her political life, in which she has almost always sided with the racists, and that of Sanders: in the 60s she chose Goldwater; in the 80s, she was working on education privatization, which is, among other things, racist; in the 90s she supported NAFTA, welfare "reform," and, most horribly, the crime bill, which was blatantly racist; in the oughts, she ran against Obama using a variety of racist dogwhistles, some of which continue to plague him to this day, like circulating the picture of him in traditional Kenyan dress (and then claiming that HRC 2008 had nothing to do with the birther movement), like using Osama bin Laden in an attack ad on Obama (and then claiming that HRC 2008 had nothing to do with spreading the idea that Obama is Muslim), like the 3 a.m. phone call ad, like saying that "hard-working people, white people" wouldn't vote for Obama.
She has been on the racist side more than on the anti-racist side. Yet for over 3 weeks, BLM let her off the hook. Republicans too.
My best guess is that BLM, like many movements these days, is partially astroturf and partially real, and eventually the real movement took over and started criticizing Hillary and Trump and others as they had criticized Sanders. But that's not how it started.

I have a little bit different take
If BLM had gone after Hillary from the beginning (remember she's an identity politics monster - "Shut up and go along and I'll pay lip service to you" - she would have marginalized them. It would have been another "Sistah Souljah moment". She would have put the "uppity n******" in their place, while shoring up her faux liberalism. Now Bernie's anti racism is impeccable - but no one knew it. By going to Berne first they gave him an opportunity (and he took it)
On to Biden since 1973
BLM is like OWS
a horizontal movement not partisan or organized top down under partisan political candidates. I think that's a good thing. BLM in the beginning of this insane electoral season had varying protestors or contingencies that did fall in line with the Democratic party just like Bernie who caucused for years with the Demorat's. The BLM 'activist's' that initially protested Bernie's SS rally were really dubious as dicey as far as their politics went. One of the woman was really out there. In a people's movement that's outside the gates of our useless politics it's easy for the strategist's and political machines to AstroTurf and use legitimate movements to for the purpose of partisan politics.
Occupy Democrat's is a good example or Bernie's so called 'Our Revolution'. I know many Democrat's who feel 'safe' supporting movements that are Democratic veal pens. They are not too radical and allow liberal's to support them as they do not threaten the status quo of the duopoly. That said I got the hopies when during this election in my 85% Democratic middle class 'progressive' district I saw 3 yard signs for Hillary, no Trumps and a lot of BLM signs. Ordinary people are aware of how screwed we all are. A lot may be stuck in the Red and Blue divide and in the on going PC, identity, culture war but their comfort zones are being seriously pushed to the limit. The Democratic puppet pols tipped their hand this time around with Bernie's campaign and the rigging we got to see in real time. Resistance is coming as things are not going to get better and more and more of us are hip to their by-partisan jive.
Dem Leadership is Delusional
I'll tell them that trying to work with Trump and the GOP Congress is delusional and prescribe a heavy dose of anti-psychotics.
We once called the Obama 11 dimensional chess. How did that work out?
They're gone, they've lost all contact with reality.
That was great stuff.

Wowza, Ship of Fools, sailing off the end of the earth
and we are all belowdecks. Are we chained down there, or simply in the dark? Time to open the hatches and mutiny?
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
Bernie opened all the hatches for us, but not enough of us came
up on deck to help him take back the ship.
You know, in a funny way I'm almost more optimistic than I've
ever been. The "system" is blowing itself up in the most incredible fashion I've ever seen.
Both parties failed at the same time. They simultaneously offered up a candidate some large portion of the electorate rejected outright as being simply unsupportable, beyond the usual partisan distaste. The media also failed in a spectacular manner. It really was The Emperor's New Clothes Election where all of our institutions were nakedly exposed as being incompetent, venal, and corrupt. What's not to love? This go round showed how pointless it is to have hope residing in the people and institutions we have as our current leadership. Who cares about them? Who has even a vestige of regard for any of the participants in this disgraceful exercise of abuse of public trust?
I feel so free of the manacles, it's exhilarating! I don't have to attempt to make excuses for my pathetic Party any longer. I don't have to marvel at the worthless commentary of the punditry. I don't have to believe that a huge political cabal encompassing both parties has any regard for me or my future or the future of the planet. I don't feel like I have any need to participate in their charades any further.
I do believe that we can bypass them. We can collect and organize and write and educate and proselytize among ourselves. We can become an unbeatable force and coalition. I know this. And what's more they know this. Why do you think they are running around with their Wag The Dog stories of Russian interference and Fake News and all the rest of it? Why is CENSORSHIP suddenly their biggest concern? We know the truth and it has set us free. Now all we have to do is act on it.
If we really wanted to scare them, we would unsubscribe to the papers and media sources that tried to manipulate us, we would cut the cable, we would vow never to donate to to these existing Partys ever again, we would set up activities where we can meet each other, like the Moral Mondays game plan, we would set up blog collectives, and most of all we will only vote for candidates who deserve to be voted for, no more lesser evil ever. I advocate that all acceptable candidates in the future make a vow to fund their campaigns the Bernie way, small donors only and no PACs or corporate donors. If they do ever win, at least we'll know they did the hard way and the right way and the ethical way.
I love the smell of panicked politicians and pundits! I inhale deep breaths of it. That's the smell of liberty my friends.

I love your writing, Phoebe.
The nation seems to be
in the process of an extreme political and psychological metamorphosis, wherein many traditional categories, divisions, and alliances are dissolving as new ones begin to emerge, provisionally, from a general state of flux and uncertainty.

I would say to them
that you can't take it with you, when you die all that money you've been grubbing up all your life won't save you. I would tell them that if they really wanted a legacy that would last maybe 100 years they would have fought the good fight and most likely still have had enough of that money to live a nice life. I would say to them that they'll only be remembered by anyone as cheap sell out shills, and any legacy from that will only be a negative, infamous one. And I would also say we see through you now, and while maybe not enough of us really see yet, the day is coming when a majority will see it. I would tell them they've helped those evil Repugnants take this country down into the shitter and all for the utter waste of needing ever more of that money that they cannot take with them. And that money won't save their kids either, it will be blood money and everyone with a functioning brain sees that. I would say they've trashed themselves on a cheap pile of stuff and expected people to keep on believing in their lies and that they themselves seem to believe their lies too. And I would ask them just what they think their own grandkids are going to think of them when the disaster finally happens and those grandkids get to come in and try to clean up their willfully ignorant and selfish mess.
But, do they care about any of this? Nope, it isn't even about winning elections anymore, the one thing they told us was the entire point of their sell out. Now they don't even bother to try to "win" and that makes them even bigger fools than we thought they were, and we DO see that.
Only a fool lets someone else tell him who his enemy is. Assata Shakur
Are you asking what will I tell Democratic politicians or what
will I tell Democratic posters?
If politicians, nothing. I will tell them nothing. I believe they either know anything I could say to them, but don't care, or are uneducable. In either case, I would be wasting my breath.
If posters, I don't think it's important to tell them anything.
My concern is how to unite Americans so that we may have some kind of shot against the plutocrats, at least on an issue by issue basis. Maybe it's too late, though. Maybe we've already let the plutocrats divide and rule (the original meme, I think) and divide and conquer for too long. Maybe now we can unite only in the most horrible of scenarios, such as the water in Flint.
It's a big waste of time to
tell the pols a damn thing. They already know as they are the perpetrators of this farce of democracy. It's globalized 'oligarchical collectivism'. Here in the USA it's also a locked in duopoly. I have been and will continue to tell the people I run into who are locked into the fake them against us that that they have met the real enemy and are supporting them. Being aware of what's going down is not enough people will have to get to a point where they do not acquiesce to Axelrod's 'world as we find it'.
This is not an inevitable world it's a carefully constructed by the ruling elite to impose their madness on both humans and the planet. Democracy and those universal inevitable self evident truths that humans developed throughout history to protect themselves from the powerful want to rule the world asshole's are gone daddy gone. It is up to us 'we the people' globally to rein them in once again.
Thanks Rusty for another inspiriting essay that tells it like it is. The ruling elite, the Devos crowd are running scared. The Russians are coming for your democracy is pathetic. The truth is out there but a lot don't want to hear it. I got told the other day on facebook by a Bernie supporting Democrat regarding this mad election that I needed to shut up as arguments like mine or Glenn Greenwald's were why Trump won.
It's hard dealing with people of good intent who are so afraid of the truth or reality. The world is not binary or made of demographic data and neither is the truth. More and more people are aware but still do not see anyway to get out of this nightmare. When they lose all parliamentary means to address their grievances they will and do find away to pry 'the blood sucking vampire squid' off humanities face. People have power they need to wake up and use it. This current viscous global 1% and their gatekeepers who have installed their dark NWO say it's inevitable, it's not. It's up to us.
