A Weed Killer we may need to "Weed" Out

So there's this weed killer used just about everywhere in the U.S. For some details:

Atrazine is the second-most widely used herbicide in the United States. Manufactured by the chemical giant Syngenta, farmers have sprayed, on average, 70 million pounds of the weed killer on cropland across the country for the last twenty years. Half of the corn grown in the United States — some tens of millions of acres — is treated with atrazine.

That's a lot of weed killer, enough that the EPA decided to do a study on the impact. The results?
Now, a new EPA draft assessment released Thursday, looking at ecological risked posed by atrazine, backs up those claims. The assessment found that heavy use of the herbicide could be dangerous to fish, mammals, birds, reptiles, and plants.
...
The EPA’s draft assessment — which looked at toxicity studies, 20 years of water monitoring, and aquatic exposure models — is hardly the first scientific assessment to link atrazine to dangerous health impacts for both animals and humans. Previous studies have linked the chemical to delayed timing of menopause, reproductive problems for men, birth defects, and cancer. Tyrone Hayes, a biologist at the University of California, Berkeley, has been publishing studies on the impacts of atrazine for years, and has long argued that the chemical can act as an endocrine disruptor, impeding the sexual development of amphibians like frogs. Following the publication of his first study into atrazine — which was actually funded by Syngenta — Hayes accused the company of trying to strong-arm his research, saying it organized a public relations campaign to discredit his reputation as a scientist.

So, we've got a chemical here that can disrupt sexual development in animals and in enough concentrations can damage both men and women, could cause birth defects, and possibly be a carcinogen. That's a long list of things wrong with this chemical. The EPA is still drafting its report, but this should be enough information for people to start reconsidering what they use on their grass. It's also a good reason to start insisting on reducing its use, since it can get into the water system and do damage to humans as well as animals. Even if they don't like looking out for humans, most people will at least try and look out for themselves. I think.

about Hillary's relationship with big agriculture:

How is Hillary personally involved in supporting big agriculture? The Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), which gathers leaders to solve the world’s problems, promotes Monsanto, the maker of RoundUp® and RoundUp Ready® seeds. Hugh Grant, Monsanto’s Chairman and CEO spoke at the Clinton Global Initiative conference in September, 2014. Ms. Clinton’s top campaign advisor, Jerry Crawford, was a lobbyist for Monsanto for years and is now the political pro for her Super PAC, “Ready for Hillary.” Clinton spoke in favor of the government’s Feed the Future (FtF) program, a USAID funded, corporate-partnered program that brings RoundUp Ready® technology to the most vulnerable populations of the world. Monsanto and Dow Chemical support Hillary and Bill’s ‘Clinton Foundation’ with generous donations.

to mix too many topics. If I understand Roundup, it doesn't have altrazine, and I don't have a problem with GMOs in general. I think there should be labeling because it wouldn't hurt.

see this as mixing topics. An administration that is heavily pro agri-industry is much less likely to support your goals(which I happen to agree with).

Monsanto's spraying has been linked to the decline of many species and it also has a detrimental effect on the soil. And Monsanto covers a lot of soil.

Also I have many problems with GMO food.

Our courts have no jurisdiction in determining if the rights to profit have been infringed upon by any US Law with regards to Environment, or Labor Rights...

We'll be stuck buying pesticide, and hormone enhanced foods, and sweat shop products, as multinational corporation seek out countries with the most lax laws to operate in to maximize their profits. If we do anything to attempt make them comply with our standards, the authority having jurisdiction is international spelled out in the treaty, and not a US Court...

We will be on the hook for damages to the "Possible Profits" the corporation claims would have been possible by their use of pesticides, and hormones to enhancd foods, and sweat shop labor to make products, at a higher profit margin than US Standards allow...

Has been proven to adversely affect reproduction. Was first found to be the reason for decline of the alligator population in the Everglades back in early 90s, if not earlier. Early 90s is when I first learned of it.

Was traced back to a plant that sprayed the plastic lining inside cans for canned food.

It's also from plastic that is heated up, like water bottles (you can't be sure that the bottles didn't sit in a hot warehouse), and microwave meals in plastic containers.

It gets in our water supply from our pee.

I also suspect early female puberty is related to it.

Your concern about pesticides and GMO labeling rings hollow when you support someone like clinton. I can only assume that these issues are not at the top of your "concerns list" or else you'd be supporting another candidate.
I don't know what you're trying to accomplish by coming here but I will say this. I first voted in 1972. I'm a Trade Unionist and have always been a registered Democrat. Over the decades I've spent countless hours away from my family phone banking, canvassing and doing the nuts and bolts of getting my Unions endorsed candidates elected, which for the most part have been Democrats. I've gotten to know quite a few politicians over the years from the local level to the federal level. Some good a lot bad. And I'm still doing it. But this time everything has changed. If the Democratic party gives clinton the nomination I will change my party affiliation to Independent. I may do it regardless because I find the Democrat establishment to be even slimier than the republicans. I find informed clinton supporters to be fake progressives and quite frankly to be self-centered and extremely selfish. I like to say they're from the "I've got mine so fuck you" wing of the Democratic party. This is the only explanation I can see for someone, who is informed, to vote for garbage like clinton.
If you're here to make friends or to try and mend fences with Bernie supporters so we'll vote for clinton should she steal the nomination I'll give you my perspective. I don't hang with republicans or clinton supporters and there's nothing anyone could say or do to get me to vote for a sack of shit like clinton.

are the same but no they are not. Here is a great summary of the two from February of this year.
Center for Biological Diversity

I had blood drawn after an over spray of Endosufan which was a big impact on my life. Could not eat food for three months without violent reactions. Still working my way out of that one.

For the next few years, however, Endosulfan is still applied in the Northwest. The EPA estimated uses during 2006 in the US Northwest, including 31,000 pounds on apples, 42,000 pounds on pears, and 11,000 pounds on potatoes. It has been 50 years since Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring called attention to the dangers of pesticides like Endosulfan. It’s taken considerable effort by active citizens, but within a few years, Endosulfan’s use may be ended internationally. Its absence will be welcomed by farm workers, tribes, residents of the Northwest, and eaters everywhere. Endosulfan’s cancellation will also add another jewel to the crown of Rachel Carson’s legacy.

But what was interesting is that Atrazine showed up in the sample. The labs say it is so universal in people that they have set a baseline which includes a given level as background for everyone. Like it or not, we can't get away from that one.

The tragedy of Endosulfan is that the metabolites are strenuous contaminates which concentrate the problems on organisms as it doesn't break down only dilutes. Found in the Arctic and Antarctic, much like DDT, the substance has been banned worldwide. But pear farmers were allowed to use it up to this year, and foreseeing the restrictions, bought up the leftovers. They sprayed more per acre in the last few years because "they wouldn't be able to use it" afterwards.

Atrazine was banned in Europe and RoundUp is off the retail shelves in France. The rebound of pollinators and different sorts of Bumblebees is astonishing. The government is working intensely with wine growers as their spray programs are similar to PNW pear spray programs. The government and the growers realized these sprays kill organisms in the ground as well. Some of them give unique flavors to wine as well as the mineral and soils content. There are more and more organic winegrowers, which will probably be the usual in a few years.

The fights with Sygenta and Monsanto are epic in Europe. The trade agreements would capture individual states/nations as the chemical/pharma corporations (often one and the same such as Bayer) want to make deals with one entity not 28. Some nations have a prove it does not harm then we'll allow it policy. Not a happy prospect for chemical manufacturers.

The resilience (there's that word), of Nature and her critters is astonishing once the pressure is off. We humans may not be so lucky, especially with the mounting pressures on our immune systems.

Lots of fruits like apples and pears are checked for surface residues but not uptake internal metabolites from chemicals such as RoundUp used in weed suppression at the root zones of tree rows.

Even expressing concern about the use of Round Up is equivalent to global warming denial. I tried to reason with him, but got tired of the insults, and anger. It was like a Bernie diary!

Anyway, we need to do more than stop using chemicals to kill things. We are headed for the icebergs of global warming, overpopulation, and declining resources. As we accelerate to the cliff, I just count my blessings. I could have been born today with a rather ugly future, rather than more than half a century ago.

I feel sorry for those that think everything will be fine. Americans have been lulled into a false sense of security by decades of relative stability, a corporate media, and wealth.

Although this is true:

The term pesticide includes all of the following: herbicide, insecticide, insect growth regulator, nematicide, termiticide, molluscicide, piscicide, avicide, rodenticide, predacide, bactericide, insect repellent, animal repellent, antimicrobial, fungicide, disinfectant (antimicrobial), and sanitizer.

LF taunts people for using the coverall "pesticide."

Also he has a crew because in one diary, a person posted a comment: "why didn't you tell me this diary was going on" or words to that effect. He and his crew are a major factor in my disgust of that site.

aka glyphosate. This molecule is the very common protein glycine with this other functional group attached to it. Glycine is an essential amino acid, which is found quite abundantly in beans of the soybean plant, hence its taxonomic name, Glycine max L. Merr.

I do not intend to imply that because glyphosate is made from a common amino acid, that it is safe for lifeforms other than plants. Plenty of deadly compounds have more or less innocuous parts; sometimes, those innocuous parts are what makes the poison effective: the organism metabolizes the poison like a nutrient.

Not a biochemist. Chem Bob or equivalent: are you in the audience?

I do not like killing weeds, though I have done so. It would be nice to have a situation where the weeds and we could live together. Durable surfaces which can deal with the rain and yet support whatever plant life can survive. I wonder whether it is possible to construct durable road surfaces out of a material which allows small plants to grow below the mesh, which absorbs rain, is relatively inexpensive to maintain, yet supports heavy car and truck use?

Peace and love be with you, reader.

I have nothing against the plants we call weeds. I dig out the invasive ones (Bind weed, deadly nightshade vine and couch grass) use a vinegar /hot pepper filled spritz bottle on the dandelions in the patio and walkway paver cracks and plant hardy natives, ground covers and perennials everywhere except the veggie beds. Organic mulch helps make it easier to pull them. People get too freaked out about weeds. I had to laugh as at the nursery, I saw 4 inch pots at 3.99$ of a 'weed' that grows wild in our area for sale as a native perennial.

My 92 year old next door organic gardening neighbor liked my weed attitude. He would say you should be proud you have the healthiest weeds on the block. I see organic dandelion greens for sale at the local progressive' grocery store and they are expensive. I drink roasted dandelion tea. I'm thinking of harvesting and roasting the roots in my yard. Another thing I've noticed over the years is if you keep at it the invasive nasty weeds become literally weeded out. They still pop up now and then and I just nip them in the bud.

If you manage your soil organically and keep the weeds at bay organically the rest of your yard including the veggies thrive and the weeds don't take over. We yanked out the front lawn years ago and planted natives trees and shrubs and native ground covers which crowd out the perennial weeds. Many Vintners in Oregon plant Festuca grass between the rows of gape vines for weed control. It's nice looking and it is not poisonous to the dirt, plants, critters and bugs.

A poem my grandma used to recite as we weeded her garden

PORTRAIT BY A NEIGHBOR - Edna St. Vincent Millay

Before she has her floor swept
Or her dishes done,
Any day you'll find her
A-sunning in the sun!

It's long after midnight
Her key's in the lock,
And you never see her chimney smoke
Till past ten o'clock!

She digs in her garden
With a shovel and a spoon,
She weeds her lazy lettuce
By the light of the moon.

She walks up the walk
Like a woman in a dream,
She forgets she borrowed butter
And pays you back cream!

Her lawn looks like a meadow,
And if she mows the place
She leaves the clover standing
And the Queen Anne's lace!

The ownership of seeds which are "Round-Up Ready" and the cross-pollination which may result in the contamination of heirloom and other hybrid crops nearby resulting in a claim by Monsanto that the crop is theirs...

In addition the "Drift" of incorrectly applied herbicides in windy conditions of high misting application techniques, or in water runoff which is used for irrigation downstream affecting the yield of nearby crops not using the chemicals...

This is a horrible dependency which the Clinton Initiative is seeking to place on 3rd World Agriculture in the corporate effort to wring the last dime out of every inhabitant of the world...

I didn't realize how many people are actually aware of the modifying of seeds. Seeds that you have to keep buying in order to plant and eat. Seeds that will not reproduce.

I have worked with people, used to work in organic/local food store, and they saved seeds, stored them, catologued them, shared them Keeping them safe.

And about the drift topic: That was happening in N. Calif due to Monsanto. They'd drift spray near grape farmers or what have you. Their poisonous shit would "drift" onto the organic farmers grapes or fields. Which caused a few things to happen:

First... you have to be certified and there's much testing and paperwork to be certified organic. Monsanto's drift spraying would ruin that.

Then Monsanto, after ruining your organic fields would swoop in with lawyers and claim that you STOLE their pesticides/spray because it's on YOUR land. Theft.

They fuck you over and then they sue you.

American's generally don't care about seeds, growing things and food. They feel there is so much food because there is so much WASTE. Waste while people go hungry... it's insane... but that's another topic. Anywhoos... Americans can't grasp a food shortage because we are obese on empty food. But the food shortages are coming, the water wars are coming.. We just aren't aware of it. Hell, our citizens think it's more important to have green yards than clean water. Dead Dandylions and disabled babies.

They will realize that they have poisoned their lawns, their water, their own bodies. Then it will be too late. It already is. Just look at the refugee crisis happening... everywhere. People here are going to be rudely awakened and they won't have time to think about spraying poison on their pretty flowers.

Water is going to be deadly expensive in just a few short years. Not only are we not ready. We aren't even aware it's coming.
