Regardless of the path in life I chose, I realize it's always forward, never straight.

seven and a half years before he was appointed. In "Mein Kampf," Adolf Hitler laid out the two main planks of his platform: Judenfrage, or the "Jewish Question," in which the Jews are characterized as worthless, and Lebensraum, in which Hitler planed to create an "Aryan homeland" stretching from Berlin far, far eastward. It was clear, then, in 1925, that war and genocide would result if this man were given any shred of power.

Vladimir Putin has one "tell-all" book. It was published in 2000, the year in which he came to power. In it, maybe he confessed he wanted to bring back the Russian empire. But it's not like there is, in Putin's brain, anything near the sort of hideous detail that was revealed in Mein Kampf. Von Papen and von Hindenburg should have known exactly what they were doing when they had Hitler appointed Chancellor.

Here's a comparison worth exploring: Putin as the Russian version of George W. Bush.

@Cassiodorus perhaps we might take him at his word. Maybe not try to define his motives in comparison to someone else.

If we were to picture the forces arrayed at him as a single entity, his motives make much more sense.

I believe that the imperial West is the entity seeking world domination.

@exindy

I think it's fair to assume a general spread of kleptocracy throughout the world as a result. World leaders must be asking: if they can steal, why can't we? Putin looks in this version like the guy in one of Aesop's fables who is currently busy killing the goose who laid the golden eggs, hoping to get all the eggs within. The goose, in this interest, is Ukraine, which he has been at war with since 2014.

As for Putin being anything like Hitler -- um, no. Hitler's notion of war was blitzkrieg: try for a quick victory and do it again and again. He was so compulsive about it that he planned the beginning of World War II for 1942 and started it in its Western theater in 1939. It worked against Poland, France, the Low Countries, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Yugoslavia, and Greece. It failed against the UK, the Soviet Union, and the United States. Hitler's obvious failing as a strategist, especially obvious in the Soviet case, was that once you declare war on a country and try to conquer them through blitzkrieg, you can't just turn around and un-declare-war on them. Putin has been working on one, count 'em, one country, for eight years now. Your explanation, of a country encircled, makes much more sense.

@gjohnsit Russia is seizing a few foreign assets while the "West" freezes Russian reserves...

I would be surprised if Putin stopped there.
