WE NEVER FORGET: December 24, 1913 - The Italian Hall Massacre, Calumet, Michigan
girl leader of the miners.
She was not the usual militant Annie Clemenc.
She was saying a prayer for the children.

Christmas Eve December 24, 2015
This morning I woke up thinking about the Italian Hall Massacre. I thought of Annie Clemenc and I remembered the miners and their families who preserved through the great Michigan Copper Strike of 1913-14.
Let us always honor their sacrifice and NEVER FORGET:

This poem was published in the Miners Bulletin, the official voice of
the Western Federation of Miners during the strike:
-by Ellis B. Harris
My heart goes out to you.
Little lives that must endure
Where miseries accrue;
In the factories and mills
There robbed of play and hearth
Suffering a world of ills
For parasites of wealth.
Little children of the poor,
You, tender, precious flowers,
Blooms for gardens sweet and pure,
Yet robbed of playtime hours.
Is it strange that blood runs wild
And hands are clenched in wrath
When we contemplate a child
Upon the thorn strewn path?
Little children of the poor,
Brave hearts shall place the blame
For the lives that you endure,
And point the nations's shame.
Boasting here of Freedom's reign
And scorning royal commands,
Forging them a master's chain
To shackle baby hands.
Little children of the poor,
Pearls for trampling swine,
Cast and mired that they secure
The wealth from mill and mine.
There are those who hear the call
From far off Galilee,
Heeding, until Mammon fall
And you, His Jewels, are free.
Little children of the poor,
A future day shall break,
When no one can e'er secure
Your lives for profit sake;
When the people's rule shall fill
The world with melody,
And childhood's joys and laughter thrill
The world with ecstasy.

Thank you JayRaye...
DK5 really did screw up those diaries, what a shame.
I ran across this tweet yesterday and thought you'd like to know that others have picked up on your work.
You and yours and the boys have a very Merry Christmas!
That list of all the names took me hours to put together.
I had it really looking nice, on blue back ground. I almost started crying when I saw it. More for them then for me. Our martyrs deserve better than a mess like that.
Thank you for that tweet, JtC. I appreciate the notice.

FWIW JR...
I used Easy Copy and transferred it to here in a test essay. It picked up all the side bar menu items where it bled over the right margin, but it did look like it could be cleaned up and restored to it's original state if you're interested. I think it can be saved.
Thank you so much, Johnny. Really appreciate it!!!

Merry Christmas to you and yours.
I never heard of the Italian Hall Masacre. I will definitely have to look at this later. I lived in Hancock for a brief while, and I went down into one of the copper mines - cold, loud, dark, and dank. I come from Italian immigrants who worked the W. VA coal mines and followed the Apalachian Trail to the factories in Detroit. Merry Christmas.

Thank you and same to you, dk
Those Italian miners were some very fine fighters. Mother Jones praised them as such more than once!

dk, many fine fighting miners ended up in Detroit and Flint
many of the copper miners from Michigan made their way there also, including some from the family of Annie Clemenc, and there they might have played a part in Labor's Great Victory of 1937

Merry Christmas!
