Vigil for Annabel

photo Anabel_zpsqhtfxma3.jpgThere was a vigil last evening for Annabel Montoya, the East Los Angeles transgender teen who was intentionally run down by a vehicle in Monterey Park on around 2:30 am on Saturday April 2. Police have said that Annabel may have been beaten before being run down.

The 16-year-old Annabel is currently in a medically induced coma in the ICU at County-USC Medical Center.

I hope to God that she’s able to pull through and come forth and let us know what really happened.

--Fernando Velarde, Annabel's uncle

People at the vigil chanted,

No more murder, no more hate!

Many attendees were members of the TransLatin@ Coalition.

What happened to her, could have happened to me.

--Vigiler

Transphobia is not okay and whether this was intentional or not, we’re still here to show that message.

--Rossmery Zayas

We get attacked, simply for who we are.

God, I can't take these stories. And yet who else is reporting them? Only you it seems.

I just can't imagine what the assailant was thinking, to think that running down a teenager was justified.

If it is any consolation, the management of brain injuries has advanced a lot. The medically induced coma will really improve the chances of recovering neurologic function.

because I just don't understand why someone would do this to a fellow human.

Humans for the most part are scared of the alien, the strange, the hard to explain or think on. If they cannot wrap their heads around the subject, they dismiss it as crazy talk, to outright disparage or hate it, politics, different ethnicity, gender identity, anything that is startling, and the most is "Other-ness" People like their comfy labels, Man/Woman/black/white/human/alien/animal, etc.

Once folks find out someone is not comfortable in their own skin, and that they wish to dress, and act and become that which does make them comfortable, it turns the world view of their friends and family upside down. Some of them then react violently, others shun, some will accept.

Sadly Annabel ran afoul of some who went full hate mode.
