U.S. now talking to Venezuela government while still refusing to admit it exists

Technically the U.S. still considers Juan Guaidó the President of Venezuela, despite the fact that he never even ran for the office of President, nor holds an elected office of any kind, and only has a 15% approval rating.
That had to make things rather awkward when the Biden Administration sent officials to Caracas this past weekend.

Senior American officials are in Venezuela this weekend to meet with the government of Nicolás Maduro, whose authoritarian rule of the oil-producing country has meant no formal diplomatic relations between the two countries since 2019.

The visit is yet another example of a geopolitical shift underway across the globe in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine as the U.S. and European countries seek energy sources other than Russia, one of the world's largest oil exporters.

The trip has three objectives:

a) to help replace Russian oil from the markets, if an embargo of Russian oil actually happens. There are several problems with this. For instance, Venezuela is completely unable to produce more than a fraction of what Russia produces. Another issue is that it is unlikely that countries like China and India would participate in an embargo of Russian oil.

b) to weaken Russia's influence in the Western Hemisphere. Russia only has a couple strong allies in this hemisphere, and Venezuela is one of them. This is a more achievable objective.

c) to restart the regime change agenda in Venezuela, which has completely stalled in the last couple years. Except this time by using diplomacy, which hard-liners like Senator Rubio unanimously oppose.

"Joe Biden using #Russia as an excuse to do the deal they always wanted to do anyway with the #MaduroRegime," Rubio tweeted Sunday morning. "Rather than produce more American oil he wants to replace the oil we buy from one murderous dictator with oil from another murderous dictator."

To give you an idea of the conflicting agenda of Washington, last weekend the Biden Administration decided to renew executive order 13962. This order makes it official policy that it considers Venezuela a threat to its national security and foreign policy.
Talk about awkward. As you might imagine, the talks didn't start out well.

In the talks, Washington sought guarantees of free presidential elections, broad reforms of Venezuela's oil industry to facilitate production and exports by foreign firms and the government's public condemnation of the Ukraine invasion, which Maduro has defended, three people familiar with the matter said.

As a concession, the U.S. officials were willing to consider temporarily allowing Venezuela to use the SWIFT system, which facilitates financial transactions between banks worldwide, to move money to other accounts, one of the sources said.

Maduro sought a total lifting of sanctions prohibiting Venezuela's oil exports, the removal of sanctions on him and other Venezuelan officials and the return to the state's control of PDVSA's U.S. subsidiary Citgo Petroleum, sources said.

Easing oil sanctions could start by allowing companies including U.S. Chevron Corp (CVX.N), India's ONGC (ONGC.NS) and Europeans Eni , Repsol (REP.MC) and Maurel & Prom (MAUP.PA) to trade cargoes of Venezuelan oil. Those firms have made separate requests to Biden's administration, but no decisions have been made.

The only truly promising news was this single sentence.

Aides to Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido were only notified about the meeting on Saturday morning.

The Guaido fiction is coming to an end, even in Washington.

In a related note, Biden is also asking Saudi Arabia to increase oil production.

hmmmm....
Anyway, true to form, our government will back track, lie, cheat, make a pact with the devil himself to get someone else's oil. Maduro needs to be very, very careful. If they make a trade agreement or treaty with Russia, it will stick. With the US, not so much.

As I understand it, Juan Guaidó lives in Washington, DC.

Couldn't they just give him (or his CIA handler) a ring?

@gjohnsit seems to me that all the media everywhere taljs about is Russia and Putin evil NATO and the west good. Once again what the hell is NATO? Cold war plus WW2 relics? Why are they so powerful. If they massed on our southern or northan boarder would we allow this? Then there is the fact that the Ukraine was fucked with in 2014 via SoS Clinton and Kerry. So sick of the nedia all of it simplifing this atrocious situation into anther Uv vs. Russia gate. Before we poke sticks at a bear perhaps we should get rid of our own KGB/CIA and other intolerable securiy agencies. We have a lot of nerve trying to be the good guys in this global insanity.Voting an obscene amount of money to the puvayors of world havoc by congress blows my mind. Can't wwe get rid of NATO whoever the fuck they are? Plus I'm not to crazy about the Clinton rrplacement of whoever ran the Ukrain before we installed these freaking Nasis. That said my heart bleeds for the people who live in this part of the world. I do not condone attacking and killing the Ukrainian peoole. I dont hate Russians or Ukraine people. I do hate the global powers that ferment xdeath and destruction for their geopolitcal evil. No excuse for any of these games they play with people and the planet.

that I by no means think Maduro is the devil himself. I admire him very much. It is those US officials who might characterize him as an authoritarian.
We have Presidents who can bring in the military to stop a protest, and by executive order, start a military operation anywhere. But they are never described as authoritarian. They are honestly and democratically elected to rule with an iron fist.

@on the cusp

Skepticism about that is rife since 2016, and redoubled since 2020.

Edit: I should add that 2000 and 2004 were suspect as hell too.

@Cassiodorus The expediency of this situation makes all moves geopolitically okay. Need more oil? Hummmm. Lets see who has oil? Maybe they should have thought of the consequences before taking out the Ukraine (Hillary/Kerry) government and installing a bunch of Nazis in 2014. Maybe NATO sucks and should be abolished. Whatever this is major global insanity. Stop it you assholes.

@QMS

Very short. Babies were now thrown out of incubators and Saddam had WMDs. Iraq and Afghanistan attacked us and none of the narrative about the Rona was ever wrong. Look at how many news sites talked about the growing problem with the Nazis in Ukraine after they wrote about Obama’s coup there, but now we are supposed to forget about all that. Americans believe whatever propaganda they are fed daily. I find it sad, but it’s why they use it.

Which AIPAC/MIC/pharma/bank bought politician are you going to vote for? Don’t be surprised when nothing changes.

Voting is like driving with a toy steering wheel.

@snoopydawg

The only way to confuse the media reading consumers is to jam new propaganda
into their heads before the suckers figure out they have been duped? I didn't get
that fallacy drug injected into my system, so have big trouble with not forgetting the
last series of distortions being doled out.

Doing mental cartwheels trying to figure out where this space ship went off course.
If it makes sense to you, you better hang on to whatever reason there is left.

@QMS

I saw through incubator farce and Saddam had WMDs, the reason we invaded Afghanistan, and especially the Russia gate scam as did many others here and on the wotb. Many democrat voters bought Russia Russia hook line and sinker and still do. They are the ones spreading Russia xenophobic propaganda and believe that Zelensky wears a white hat and is in the front lines fighting against evil Vlad Putin. The crap they are saying about him and the Russian people is nauseating. If you find the answer to the where the space ship went off course please enlighten me. I just don’t get it.

which few seem to exercise. I am like you. When I see a distortion of the facts at hand, it
tends to stick to certain processors in the memory banks. So, I already know this or that
is BS, for whatever reason. And those particular awareness events do not disappear down
the memory hole. It is how we learn, after all.
