Fall is in the air....
as we wind our way to the last full week in October. Time to finish digging all the sweet potatoes. It's nice having fresh lettuce again (summers here are too hot and it gets bitter and bolts). The last of the tomatoes are little. They are small and not like the big mid-summer fruits (but still tasty).
My hypothesis on southern culture/intellect is that southerners didn't have to think ahead. All winter you can grow greens, and there is usually enough grass for the animals to get by grazing. In the northern regions you have to plan...food for yourself and your livestock, fuel to stay warm, and so on.
I suggest this heritage is still with us and so southerners are easily misled because they don't have the background of thinking ahead (nor very deeply). However, I find southerners who break through the propaganda to be deep because of the difficulty of their escape.
Religion plays a role too. One might argue that has to do with intellect as well. The most devout states are nine Southeast states and Utah
http://newsfeed.time.com/2013/02/13/where-are-the-most-religious-states-...
Sadly that is where so many southerners get their views. How the churches can be against healthcare for the poor and be for war and economic domination by the 1% seems anti-christian to me. But back to my initial point...they don't think.
Here's hoping we all continue to think about our path through the fog. All the best!

Good morning, lookout. With a benign climae and natural
ecology, plus slaves to do the work, it is possible that thinking shifted from critical survival plans based on and tested by empirical reality to other matters, such as social hierarchies and interactions and religion. OTOH, people spent too much time and mental energy on religion and related matters in the North-east too, perhaps as a retreat from reality, so who can say.

might include diet as a factor too

What a beauty name for such a pokey plant. Yellow Star Thistle, the bane.
Thanks wikipedia, public domain
Yesterday the Cloverdale Conservation Corps was formed, a solitary collective. I picked up ten gallons of trash and star thistle. Some drive-by called me a "trash warrior" and got flashed the peace sign. I "adopted" an area nearby to make more beautiful and less pokey. Saw a lot of seed eaters, bushtits and yellow finch. omg that gives instant earworm! Guess Who?

FALL FOR PEACE
Good morning, thanks for your efforts and thanks for the
tunes. Yellow star thistle is very invasive, and I was once told by some state official that it was allowable to pull it even in state park lands.

Food system collapse? Nah!

Dried up star thistle burns like gas.

Normal!
P.S. Apologies for mixing up Open Thread with Lookout's great Weekly Watch, I am dazed and confused after seeing the neighbor spray toxic tire cleaner on their wheels, and then getting in and driving off. After someone around here called the cops on me for picking up trash, wha? This is a strange world right now. Me alien being, need talk down.

"The New York City bank was housed in a Roman-style temple"
LOL thanks so much el, I'm just reading wiki history of Knickerbocker Trust Company.
The money temple! C'mon you guys, how are we NOT the fall of the Roman Empire, I mean where's the innovation? NFL Coliseums?
New fake face.
Too bad the inner parts are still so recognizable, J.P. Morgan, R.U. Kidding?

Jimmy Carter interview: Five memorable lines
http://us.cnn.com/2017/10/22/politics/jimmy-carter-new-york-times-interv...
1. Would help with North Korea, if Trump asked him
2. Players should “stand during the American anthem”
3. Obama didn’t live up to his “wonderful statements”
4. “I think the media have been harder on Trump”
5. “We voted for Sanders”
Thanks and good morning, lotlizard. Carter's willingness to
tell the truth, as he sees it, is always refreshing.

My pleasure. Good morning and thanks to you for reading. One of
the fun things about this format for a column is new personal discoveries, and one of the tribulations is that I seldom remember them all of listen to them too much thereafter. But now and again, if I see them later, there is a hint of recognition and I give a listen. Of curse, there are a lot of duds and even terrible junk which I listen to in the process. I've been trying to be more inclusive and expansive, but plowing too deep into the recents has left me reeling from tru-tone and millenial whoop, so I need to find a way to get around that problem.

Some years back, about this time of year
we traveled into the Adirondacks to pickup-camper camp. On one hike, two dogs, mine on lead, we came to a floating 2X4 installed as a bog walkover. Dog and I fell off and in.

I HID (AND SLEPT). mY KITCHEN HAS BEEN DECLUTTERED, UP TO ME TO SANITIZE IT. SHE IS DEALING WITH MY BRAIN DISSOLUTION WORSE THAN ITS VICTIM.

SO SORRY TO HEAR THAT!
Maybe she thought your hearing had been affected? I know, I know, but unless she was screaming that her visit was causing her to miss a football game and wings at a sports bar, she's probably terribly worried about you.
Everyone hates Dr Phil, but I have learned to love some of his isms. He taught me that anger is just fear turned outward.
I did a bit of ALL CAPS YELLING AROUND HERE because I was worried about you.
Hope you're better now that she decluttered your kitchen. I'd let her yell at me if she wants to come do mine, and my closet, and my shed, and . . .
