"breaking" him by just riding him down a quiet, 5 mile country road. I was singing a quiet song while walking along. We came to this small bridge, but the trees off to our left were full of vultures. Likely 40 or 50. The tree was black with them. And they all slowly lifted their wings, and this grandson of Secretariat took off.
And, we ran that road in very short order. I pulled his right rein with all I had, got him turned down another 4 mile quiet, country road. About half way, a damn cow came through some brush to the fence, and mooed. Well, off we went again. The young horse was not familiar with cows.
now, seems the State highway guys had cut down some giant pine trees that laid across the road side ditches, so as not to fall on the electricity high ligns, and with no place to go but the highway and vehicles , I just steered the horse to jump them. As we jumped, people in their yards cheered.
At the end of that road, my horse was finally tired. We had to go 4 miles to town, through town, then 2 miles to the house.
He had become reliant upon my judgment, was pretty darn bridle-wise and broke by the time we both got home in one piece.
His name was Charleston. He won national awards for 3-day eventing, was nearly purchased by an Olympic team, but his owner would not part with him.

I recently took my husband around that 12 mile loop, showing him the vulture tree, where the cow got her head through the thicket...
