Striking a blow against HB2

Superintendent Ann Clark of Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools announced today that transgender students in the system can be called by the name and gender they choose and may have access to restrooms and locker rooms consistent with their gender identity. The district conducted training with school administrators on the issue today.

School officials said the move follows the guidance of a federal appeals court ruling and was not done in defiance of North Carolina’s controversial House Bill 2.

This is about courage, understanding and compassion. These are our children. These are the community’s children.

--Superintendent Clark

CMS officials say they’ve always been sensitive to transgender issues, but that the current political debate has caused them to send a clear message to teachers and administrators.

This bill is extremely unpopular here in North Carolina. A majority of the people want it overturned. It is really beginning to look like McCrory will be a one term Governor because of this.

that HB2 deals with more than bathrooms. It also takes away the rights of cities or counties to mandate a minimum wage higher than the state minimum wage, or to have specific laws governing hours of labor, benefits, vacation, leave, etc. etc. Rev. Barber has repeatedly pointed this out. The bathroom provisions have created a frenzy (smokescreen) while the anti-labor, anti-local control provisions have gone largely unnoticed.
