to the previous decades. By FAR. Of course there are always great artists in every decade (I love the Cure, and was a metal and thrash head then but also like a lot of New Wave, though most of that stuff doesn't stand up. What I did miss, and have now re-discovered was the hardcore and punk stuff during that era).

Just looking at the hits of the day, the 80's are atrocious compared to the 70's and 80's. All you have to do, literally, is to go down a list of the #1 or Top Ten hits of that decade and compare it to exactly ten or twenty years before - and it's no comparison (I used to work for Billboard and have the books. Trust me, it's like comparing a JV basketball team to the 1990's Chicago Bulls). I guess you can tell, I'm much less sanguine about that decade - and I was in college right at the heart of it! Man, did it suck. Mosking Mosking Mosking Mosking

In a general sense, the tepid music of that era was a reflection of a RW super Conservative wet dream of dumbed down, inoffensive, and corporate culture designed for crass consumerism and willful ignorance. Don't talk about what's going, in fact, let's pretend nothing is happening. I see a direct lineage of how we got from there to the ugly, oppressive and infernal wasteland of Neoliberalism today. Marketers telling us our worth could be found in the products we buy. Obedience and shopping. Keep stuffing our faces and filling up our garages, attics and basements with cheap goods made by slave labor in SE Asia. All started then, propped up by vapid and empty pop music.

I'll let Bill Hicks take over from here for a few minutes:

I've also got some serious theories about how the 80's ruined practically every good rock band who existed before it, by sucking them into this vortex of terrible over-production, gadgets, fake drums, compressed guitars, producer-driven pandering pop, compelled to do ridiculous, expensive videos, (along with the worst fashion). It was a whirlwind of cheese. Just briefly, consider all these rock bands in the 70's: Genesis, Rush, The Who, Heart, Jefferson Starship, Steve Miller, Neil Young, Van Halen, etc, to name just a few off the top of my head. Now consider their 80's ventures. Oh-no! Gag-fest.

I don't have time to expound more right now. But I'd love to. Maybe I'll put together a fun musical/cultural essay someday soon on what I mean.

I'll be at the Desert Trip concert tomorrow and all weekend. The entire 80's could never put up a bill that comes anywhere near the universe of musical profundity and power that can be found in just these six artists' contributions.

Nah, the 80's don't compare.

I will write this up in an essay to explain further, with tons of examples. Of course this is all subjective, isn't it? So yeah, I'm just pretty passionate about this subject (obviously) and music overall.

And Dire Straits, both of whom are too talented to be totally sucked down in the Reagankultur. Even though I didn't like Bowie dabbling in pop, he too was too talented to go down that vortex. But you're right that a lot of bands did, and that a lot of 80s bands sucked.

That said, I've come to truly appreciate a great deal of the goth, new wave, and world music of the 80s. A great deal of what I love from that era was released by one record label: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4AD

Shows how one or two businessmen can affect so much, under capitalism--at least, under the form of capitalism where entrepeneurship is allowed and the market is less rigged. I'm not saying that's necessarily a good thing--but sometime look at a list of AD4's bands in the 80s and early 90s--and imagine 80s music without them. Phew!

I don't disagree with much of what you have said there about 80s POP music. And like you, I tend to prefer the stuff coming out of the 60s and 70s.

But...my memory of the 80s - I was in college from 82-86 - is crammed full of alternative radio (college stations) playing really cool stuff that was good because it was doing something decidedly different from what had come before. Also I recall there was a political undercurrent to a fair bit of the non-pop music, with mainly anti-nuke and anti-Reagan/Empire themes. Not to mention the massive celebration of diversity that was on full forward display in the styles. Maybe not the equal of the politically-conscious songs of Jefferson Airplane et al, but still pretty good to have around in an era where most people were in love with the Bomb.

style. Synths came to the forefront and electric guitars were flanged and chorused playing licks that breathed. The synth licks were not Keith Emerson or Rick Wakeman but were made more melodic for dance. Try dancing to ELP or Yes. It's a style and didn't reflect on the musicians ability but highlighted new technology like the Linn drum machine, Ensoniq Esq-1 and the Yamaha DX7. It was based on the new sound not the new lick. Samplers had just arrived on the scene. The music was made for dance clubs it wasn't made for hanging out smokin weed and listening to intricate guitar, drum and keyboard licks. Flock of Seagulls and B52's come to mind. Simple yet fun.

Apparently potential 3rd-party voters are so inconvenient that it's best to treat them as if they don't exist. One of the members of the CNN (Clinton News Network) VP debate focus group posted the following:

What happened was they asked us for the first time if any of us were now decided after having watched the debate. 5 said that they would vote for Clinton. 2 said that they would vote for Trump, and 12 said that they would vote 3rd party. They then said they were going to re-shoot it, except this time they changed “3rd party” to “undecided”. Some of us asked about the third party option, and they ignored us. They then said they were going to shoot it again, and still asked for “undecided” voters and left out “3rd party”. A lot of the members voted “undecided” because it was the only option other then Trump or Clinton.

Did you know they're using the footage of Obama scolding the CBC as a political ad?

Priorities USA, ladies and gentleman. You can't make this shit up.

Their donor list and show us an absence of Big Oil, then they can have a say. Until then, they are tools for their Money Masters. Disgusting.

Several sources reporting Shrillary has bought time on the weather channels. It's so obnoxious, I"m hoping it isn't true!

BTW, National Enquirer now leading with the story of Brennan Leach. New York Times has picked it up too.

Of course, Shrillary won't notice anything - as she's gone into "retreat" to prepare for the next debate.

She represents was so palpable recently, I caught myself wishing she would stroke out while taking the oath of office. Her hand on the bible, on live television, millions around the world watching, while she collapses to the ground in a twitching heap of cause and effect karma. Then I had to sit in front of my Buddhist altar chanting furiously to make amends for wishing harm on another human being and pray for her good health. Ugh. I'm going to need a support group for people suffering PTSD when this election is over.

In terms of Live TV, otherwise, who knows what TPTB would cook up. Although, I suppose the debates would work, right? They're live. Image the headlines for that event. Presidential Candidate declared DOA at nearest hospital. Speculation from Clinton camp about body double begin to emerge. Was it Hillary, or someone who looks a lot like Hillary. Stay tuned folks!

You mean it would give them 7 seconds to cut off the signal entirely and start running the Movie of The Week? Yeah, that'd work. Lol.

if something unforeseen occurred, the local station would cut to a hand-painted sign that said “One Moment Please” and some generic background music.

Later this gave way to the more long-winded “We are experiencing technical difficulties — please stand by.”

Time rarely meshes now. They could start showing last years' new broadcasts again.

edit: Spello fix in subject line, return of post-concussion and another fall yesterday. My quality of life is swirling down the tubes.

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

So sorry to hear you've had another fall.

Thinking we're all feeling as if the world is falling apart, on our heads, and not a damn thing we can do about it. SO much worse for you, with serious physical illness making it so much worse.
Hoping you have good and gradual, lasting healing.

Concussions are nasty. Only know from a friend who is recovering now, bad, bad, bad fall off bicycle, helmet cracked - and concussion.

Time for "upward" healing swirling. Hope there's a favorite activity you can still do, while healing.
