Russian mutiny currently underway.

(Updates below the fold)
Too early to determine how far this mutiny will spread, but as of today 25,000 Russian Wagner mercenaries commanded by Yevgeny Prigozhin are driving for Moscow. Putin has bolstered the civil defense.

Russia has opened a criminal case against the head of the Wagner mercenary group for alleged armed mutiny, with security tightened in the capital.

Yevgeny Prigozhin accused the country's defence ministry of targeting his troops and ordering a rocket strike on Wagner's field camps in Ukraine - killing "a huge number of our comrades".

He warned that his troops will move to punish defence minister Sergei Shoigu - and urged the army not to offer resistance.

"This is not an armed rebellion, but a march of justice," Prigozhin said.

For those unfamiliar with Prigozhin:

Sergei Markov, a pro-Kremlin political commentator, described Prigozhin as "the second-most popular man after Putin" and a "symbol of Russia's military victory for millions of people"

Though I'm loathe to source The Guardian, they have this quote by Prigozhin I find interesting.

This is not a military coup, this is a march of justice. Our actions do not hinder the armed forces in any way,” the Wagner chief said, adding that the “majority of soldiers” were on his side. The warlord has been arguing with top military officials for months, singling out Shoigu, over battlefield failures.

The question I have is: when Prigozhin says the majority of soldiers are on his side, does he mean Wagner's soldiers or the entire Russian army. The answer to that question may determine the seriousness of this developing situation.

Background on the clash between Shoigu and Prigozhin: A few weeks ago, Shoigu ordered all mercenaries to sign contracts with his office by the end of the monthy. Prigozhin refused. Putin sided with Shoigu.

“Wagner will not sign any contracts with Shoigu,” Prigozhin said in response, criticising Shoigu for failing to “properly manage military formations”.

When asked to comment on Putin’s statements on Wednesday, a defiant Prigozhin doubled down. “When we started participating in this war, no one said that we would be obliged to conclude agreements with the Ministry of Defence,” he said in a rare direct rebuke of the president.

“None of the Wagner fighters is ready to go down the path of shame again. And so no one will sign contracts,” he said, adding that he believed the Russian president would find a “compromise” for Wagner.

Putin had previously praised Prigozhin, who has become a popular figure among those unhappy with how the war has progressed so far.

“At the start of the special military operation, we quickly realised that the ‘carpet generals’ […] are not effective, to put it mildly,” Putin said. “People started to come out of the shadows who we hadn’t heard or seen before, and they turned out to be very effective and made themselves useful.”

Will update as more becomes clear.

UPDATE: Aljazeera saying Wagner forces have control of Rostov Army HQ.

Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin has demanded Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Russia’s top general Valery Gerasimov come to meet him in the southern city of Rostov-on-Don.

In a video posted on social media, Prigozhin said he was now at the headquarters of the Southern Military District, which is in Rostov-on-Don.

“We have arrived here, we want to receive the chief of the general staff and Shoigu,” Prigozhin said on the video.

“Unless they come, we’ll be here, we’ll blockade the city of Rostov and head for Moscow.”

You can watch the video here.

UPDATE:
Putin about to address the situation live.

UPDATE: Wagner forces claim to have downed a Russian helo.

UPDATE: Medhurst declares this is not a coup.

UPDATE: Per Aljazeera,

Wagner chief Prigozhin says his fighters, who were advancing towards Moscow, were turning around and returning to their bases in order to avoid bloodshed.

In an audio message released by his press service, Prigozhin said, “They wanted to disband the Wagner military company. We embarked on a march of justice on June 23. In 24 hours we got to within 200 km [125 miles] of Moscow. In this time, we did not spill a single drop of our fighters’ blood.”

“Now, the moment has come when blood could be spilled. Understanding responsibility [for the chance] that Russian blood will be spilled on one side, we are turning our columns around and going back to field camps as planned.”

It sounds almost as if the Russians were coordinating the entire thing, so prepared were they.

So even if the Russian officialdom told themselves Prigozhin could be contained, the rousing of Ukrainian opponents in Russia might be another matter. Even with Prigozhin going rogue, the Western media seemed a bit surprised as to how Russia swung into high alert mode.

I had wondered if Prigozhin was merely bait so the Russians could root out the sleeper cells waiting to strike should Russian forces revolt. Staging a phoney mutiny would activate electronic activity. Per Naked Capitalism:

However, recall also the West has been talking ad nauseam about an uprising versus Putin. So whether by action or design, Prigozhin’s move will serve as a trigger for Ukraine sleeper cells in Russia to swing into action. And again, Rybar suggested the Russian security forces had been put on alert for that type of operation BEFORE the Prigozhin gambit:

At 2am June 22nd...information was received about the preparation of an armed attack on government facilities.

It goes on to state that FSB officers captured two GUR agents and extracted the identities of the entire chain of underground cells in the Moscow region. They began busily rounding up those people.

It will be interesting to see if charges against Prigozhin are dropped. That would indicate he was part of a Russian psyop to uncover Ukranian cells hiding near Moscow. If they go ahead and execute him, it would mean he only turned back when he realized the planned coup had already failed.

is that they fight for pay, and if they don't get paid promptly and well, or if the other side outbids yours, they can and will turn on you. History has many, many examples

@QMS Do you think this story is entirely fabricated, (i.e. Putin et al, would be surprised and amused to hear this "news"), or do you just think it's hyperbole? Do you think the conflict is real, but entirely incited by spies sowing miscommunication within Russia? Do you trust the sources BoBM linked?

Certainly, if Prigozhin's accusations are true, I can hardly fathom why the Russians would shoot themselves in the foot like that.

I've never been able to get much information, and naturally, even less that's credible.

I did think it was a bad sign when I first heard Russia was using mercenaries - but again, I'm confused because I get the impression they're not simply a mercenary group.

How heavily have they been relying on them, as opposed to the "proper" Russian military?

@The Liberal Moonbat Wagner Group were Russian prisoners who were given the option to earn their get out of jail pass if they fought in this special operation. They are volunteers to that extent, and I believe they get a stipend.

@Cassiodorus @Cassiodorus This has to be the best sentence I've read yet.

"This does not look it will develop into anything important."

Wagner was in Voronezh as of this morning, that's half way to Moscow.

Putin's cook took the southern military district without much fighting at all.

Lots of private jets taking off and leaving Moscow.

Oil depot in Voronezh blown up, Voronezh is that city halfway to Moscow, probably the military seeking to deny Wagner fuel to march on Moscow.

Lukashenko strongman ruler of Belarus, vassal state of Russia reported to have flown to Turkey.

And folks here don't know who or what Wagner is, not discussed on Tas or Sputnik I guess.

Nope, won't amount to much.

US media on summer break. Including GOS where it seems all the paid staff is silent, Kos jet setting to Puerto Rico with entire family and is off the net. Some carbon footprint all that flying eh? Best follow is Vindman who used to be the main guy we had on Ukraine. He's patriotic US and knows what he's talking about, you all probably hate him for those two attributes. He can tell Wagner forces from Russian at a distance, driven the road Voronezh to Moscow six times, speaks Russian. Best not to hear news that might be upsetting though.

Russia about to kick Ukraine's butt, entering Kiev in morning LOL. Wagner took 9 months to take Bakmut, took Rostov on first day. Russian speaking Russians liberating Russia from Russia.

@ban nock

Or, to quote Simplicius on the topic of Prigozhin:

The problem is, a lot of his words are tantalizing. They appeal to our greater senses in wanting to believe that some white knight of justice is clearing out the corrupt institutions for the greater good of Russia, all expressed in syrupy, patriotic language. And if it were true, I’d fully back him. But as I pointed out above, the vast majority of datapoints he states are outright, objectively false.

And lastly, why would I want my criteria for news to be that I receive it from "patriotic Americans"? I would really rather prefer that my news be objective, given that I am being lied-to all the time.

"get out of jail free" basis, and some as simply soldiers for hire, ye classic "soldier of fortune type". They are what we call "contractors", like Blackwater, and somewhat like the French Foreign Legion, but their contract is not with the government, but with the organization. Russia has a constitution and laws, much to the surprise of most USAians. When the ukies began waging war on ethnic russians / russian speakers, Russia's government opted to use Wagner to back up and support the various local militias in Donbas and Luhansk rather than sending in Russian Army for reasons having to do with their laws and constitution regarding the use of official Russian Armed forces in what was then an extra-territorial conflict. I don't know the ins and outs of that. Wagner is primarily infantry without any armor or artillery of its own, fwiw, and no air. Prigozian is one of the founders, principal cheerleader and some sort of father figure but is not part of operational command. He is also something of a loose canon.

I then clicked on the names in the tweets to see their other tweets and got even more information. Simplicius took a poll in his essay I linked to last night and most people thought it was a psyops from the Russian military, but more information today looks like that’s less likely. What’s interesting that both Yves and Simplicius show is that Russia had planned in advance for some of this to happen. Which just confuses me more. It could be a dust up between those who support Putin going slow and others that want a more aggressive tact taken. I can’t remember where I read, but apparently Russia knows where the decision makers including lots of NATO folks are, but hasn’t taken them out yet. Shoigi warned that any attacks on Crimea or Russian territory will see Russia attacking decision centers.

An update from last night’s update on this. RT link.

I think people should be careful if they hope that Putin gets taken out because there are a lot of people in the military that want to see Russia take harsher actions in Ukraine. That means that a lot more people will die. Damn all those who derailed the peace talks last March! This could have been over a year ago.

To expose the Ukraine sleeper cells.

Prigozhin was exposed to be working with Ukraine intel. The whole thing got leaked on Discord. Why would he do that?
Because the stated goal of 5 Eyes is Russian civil war. Sleeper cells were in place for that moment.
Prigozhin may be a traitor or he may be Russian bait set out to lure the sleepers out of hiding.
It seems to have worked. Two Ukranian agents have been captured and allegedly gave up the entire network.
