Reefer Madness Meets Stupid Conversative

reefer mad.jpg

In related news, a college baseball coach has been fired from his job because he's fucking stupid.

Mike Jeffcoat, the coach of Texas Wesleyan’s baseball team, sent this email to a potential baseball team recruit from the stoned state of Colorado.

“Thanks for the interest in our program,” Jeffcoat wrote. “Unfortunately, we are not recruiting players from the state of Colorado. In the past, players have had trouble passing our drug test. We have made a decision to not take a chance on Student-athletes from your state. You can thank your liberal politicians. Best of Luck wherever you decide to play.”

https://www.denverpost.com/2018/03/01/mike-jeffcoat-fired/

You gotta be kidding me, man. For crying out loud, good grief and WTF!

Now he's been fired for discrimination. Evidently there was some other recruiting violation also used as justification. I would imagine someone this stupid had a trail of stupid the university might have decided simply got too stupid.

Actually Mike, the citizens of Colorado voted to legalize marijuana, not Colorado's "liberal" politicians. The same goes for Washington State, Oregon and a number of other states. That list is just going to keep growing until your recruiting base, if you ever get to coach again, will be limited to family and friends.

Ah, that's how it is in America today. Mike is a symbol. We have lots of symbols of what's wrong in this country.

Being stupid (and getting yourself fired) is one of them.

This is for Mike. Get well soon brother.

I heard a story back in the 1990s that they tried to institute drug testing and nearly lost the entire advanced chip design team over it. Apparently it helps to drop acid when you are on the bleeding edge.

The legislature is thinking about passing legislation to study whether marijuana has any good qualities for helping people who have chronic pain. But if they decide that it does and they want to legalize it for this purpose, people here will rise up against it. They think that anyone who smokes it is going to hell. Gawd, if I had the money to move out of this state, I would. I sure hated moving back here.

BTW , Hatch thinks that anyone who likes Obamacare is stupid. But

"Yesterday, I made a poorly worded joke about Obamacare supporters — a joke that was not reflective of my actual feelings towards my friends on the other side," the Utah Republican said in a prepared statement.

"While I occasionally slip up, I believe that my legislative record reflects my commitment to bipartisanship and civility much more than my flippant, off-the-cuff comment," he said.

Hatch called the Affordable Care Act the "stupidest, dumbass" bill he has ever seen during a speech at the American Enterprise Institute.

Oops, hate it when that happens.

After a mom explained how her daughter was having 70 seizures a day and that she was moving to Colorado if Utah wouldn't legalize the oil.

It's a start. We know why there is such a big push to keep it illegal. Big pharma doesn't want its profits dinged. Same with the alcohol industry. Alcohol causes way more problems than pot does.

Sorry I don't give a fuck about baby pro sports anymore. First world problems, I have returned to the third world in California via the liberal politicians. "That's the system." There was a meeting up north with the bureaucrats the other day. I'm sure lobbyists were in attendance too.

Smaller pot growers in state feel stifled

“If the overall goal of the program was to favor a corporate, big dollar, new money industry then we have succeeded,” Linegar said. “If the goal was to create a workable pathway for existing operators, then I think we have failed.”
...
Hosted by State Sen. Mike McGuire, D-Healdsburg, and Assemblyman Jim Wood, D-Healdsburg, the event included a broad discussion lasting more than three hours with the state’s top cannabis officials, including Lori Ajax, who oversees the California Bureau of Cannabis Control, as well as Richard Parrott, director of the CalCannabis Cultivation Licensing division.
...
The state is in a headlong race against the state’s entrenched and lucrative black market for cannabis. Most of the pot produced in California is shipped out of state.

McGuire said 60 percent of the nation’s cannabis is grown in Mendocino, Humboldt, Trinity and Lake counties.

“We wanted to hold this hearing on the North Coast because legalization and regulation of cannabis is transforming our region,” McGuire said.

That's my rep! Just kill me now. And wow, Lake County representin'. Blackberry Kush feels no pain. This part cracks me up if it weren't so tragic:

The lack of inventory is clearest on the shelves of dispensaries.

About 15 miles south of Ukiah in Hopland at Emerald Pharms dispensary, a selection of cannabis-infused foods and candies filled four shelves prior to Jan. 1.

'Cause if they say 15 miles north of Cloverdale, inside The Solar Living Center, next to Real Goods, it wouldn't have the same ring. Ding! Hopland is the next town north I can no longer visit because Public Transportation is so great! Quality of life.

Most of their customers are between 50 and 70 years old, a demographic interested in the therapeutic properties of cannabis, whether they have medical recommendations or not.

duh

Y'all are not going to like the corporate takeover of cannabis, it is truly going to suck. Bigly. Everything becomes shit under corporate rule. good luck

@eyo here in WA state also. Although I think more small growers are participating here than in CA so far. The article said out of 5-7000 growers in Sonoma county, only 3 have received licenses. The regulations must be ridiculous. Growing weed is about the same as growing tomatoes, anyone can do it (even me!) The black market continues here and will continue in CA.

Humboldt County cannabis farmers protest tax, compliance costs

As Netflix documentary cameras were rolling, a host of cannabis farmers and industry stakeholders went before the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors in Eureka on Tuesday morning to voice their frustrations on the county’s marijuana tax and the costs of becoming legal.

Many farmers who received interim cultivation permits from the county in December 2017 said they were irritated that they had to pay the county’s cultivation tax — even if they didn’t grow any crop — while those who waited until 2018 to apply for a permit did not have to pay.

“I’ve never been closer to losing everything I’ve worked for than right now,” Humboldt County resident and cannabis farmer Harold English said to the board in the standing-room only meeting. “...You’re pushing us out. We’re your mom and pops. You’re going to push us out and change the character of this county.

instead of making it possible for big business to take over like it is in other states, they legalized it through the legislature and now every one who wants to grow pot and smoke can. They are only limited on the amount that they can grow. This takes out big businesses from having a market on it and being the only ones that will get tax incentives and the rush for people to buy up land to grow it on as well as countless other problems that it looks like CA is having. Imagine if this was done at the national level.

Vermont passed the correct pot legislation instead of making it possible for big business to take over like it is in other states, they legalized it through the legislature and now every one who wants to grow pot and smoke can. They are only limited on the amount that they can grow.

Actually, Colorado's legalization legislation is very similar.

We had the advantage that Korporate Amerika opposed our legalization outright (courtesy Governor John Hickenlooper) and so the People were able to pass what Vermont modeled its legislation after.

I'm against the idea being pushed that college athletes should be paid. What a complete distraction from the purpose of a college. Colleges should be for academics not pro sports teams. The profits made should go to improving the academics not making some lucky students rich. If students are going to get paid to learn and get a degree than all students should get paid not just those with athletic talent.

@Big Al
are deep dumbness:

Nearly all the sports practised nowadays are competitive. You play to win, and the game has little meaning unless you do your utmost to win. On the village green, where you pick up sides and no feeling of local patriotism is involved, it is possible to play simply for the fun and exercise: but as soon as the question of prestige arises, as soon as you feel that you and some larger unit will be disgraced if you lose, the most savage combative instincts are aroused. Anyone who has played even in a school football match knows this. At the international level sport is frankly mimic warfare.

Instead of blah-blahing about the clean, healthy rivalry of the football field and the great part played by the Olympic Games in bringing the nations together, it is more useful to inquire how and why this modern cult of sport arose. Most of the games we now play are of ancient origin, but sport does not seem to have been taken very seriously between Roman times and the nineteenth century. Even in the English public schools the games cult did not start till the later part of the last century. Dr Arnold, generally regarded as the founder of the modern public school, looked on games as simply a waste of time. Then, chiefly in England and the United States, games were built up into a heavily-financed activity, capable of attracting vast crowds and rousing savage passions, and the infection spread from country to country. It is the most violently combative sports, football and boxing, that have spread the widest. There cannot be much doubt that the whole thing is bound up with the rise of nationalism—that is, with the lunatic modern habit of identifying oneself with large power units and seeing everything in terms of competitive prestige.

Serious sport has nothing to do with fair play. It is bound up with hatred, jealousy, boastfulness, disregard of all rules and sadistic pleasure in witnessing violence: in other words it is war minus the shooting.

just think -- if state university education were free (including a room and board stipend), they wouldn't have the excuse that athletics provides an opportunity for students who otherwise couldn't afford college.
if state university education were fully funded by federal and state money, universities wouldn't have the excuse of needing to have a successful football program so as to attract big money alumni donors.

Like alot of things, the best answer is the one not being considered (imo), get sports out of the education system. Maybe develop a club system approach that would give access to all levels of experience and ability. Particularly in high school and junior high the public school system sports programs are discriminatory.

The sole purpose of sports and physical education (PE) in high school and junior high is war preparation. Get the future cannon fodders used to taking orders and acting against their own interests.

A voluntary, club-based system would provide more and better athletes; but it wouldn't help make whole schools full of kids into obedient soldiers, which is why we don't do it that way.

For the vast majority of kids, taxpayer monies spent on PE and school sports are a pure waste. Time better spent almost anywhere else is wasted on non-development of talents most kids just flatly don't have. And the demonstration of said fact only does the kids harm.

A very few Enlightened districts are shifting their PE emphasis for the bulk of their kids to "healthy recreation" things like recreational swimming and mountaineering. But far too few of these exist.....

The NCAA Makes Billions and Student Athletes Get None of It
Despite devoting forty to sixty hours per week to their sport most of the year, Division I football players lack basic economic rights under the NCAA’s cartel restrictions.
By Greg Johnson and StudentNation
April 9, 2014

For many years, the pay-for-play issue in major college sports was a no-brainer to me. A full-ride scholarship—a free education—is an invaluable experience. A college degree is something so many bright Americans struggle to afford, let alone attain. So the idea of athletes getting any kind of compensation beyond a free opportunity to pursue a degree was silly to me.

Not long after coming to Rutgers, I started to realize that student athletes are in a situation the rest of us cannot truly relate to. Universities recruit them to operate within the NCAA—a fully commercialized, multi-billion dollar industry that regulates players to the point of exploitation.

All television revenue, ticket and jersey sales, likeness promotions and other sources of income go to the NCAA, the schools, the coaches, the event staffs and everyone else involved in the business—except for the athletes creating the value. Last year, the NCAA men’s basketball tournament generated $1.15 billion in television ads, well beyond the revenue generated by the NFL and NBA playoffs, according to ESPN.

Despite devoting forty to sixty hours per week to their sport most of the year—more than many full-time jobs—Division I football players aren’t considered employees and lack basic economic rights under the NCAA’s cartel restrictions. That’s what former Northwestern quarterback Kain Colter is pushing to change in his fight for unionization of the College Athletes Players Association (CAPA). He wants better medical insurance and academic support for players, and rightfully so.

The NCAA’s exploitative marketing comes in exchange for a scholarship incidental to the industry, and it requires far more time spent playing a major sport than studying for classes. Colter testified that advisors kept him from pursuing a dream of becoming a doctor in favor of easier classes to cater to his football schedule. That’s not putting someone in a position to succeed academically if they aren’t going professional athletically. ...

... The NCAA tags student athletes with the label of “amateur,” but it’s more of an excuse to control the distribution of billions of dollars than an institutional ideal. The notion that college athletes should play strictly for the love of the game is laughable. If so, why give them a scholarship at all? Oh, right, schools need athletes enrolled for revenue and institutional advancement.

To be clear, student athletes do not need salaries or monthly paychecks, even though the NCAA runs just like any other professional sports league. They should simply be allowed to operate within the free market like anyone else in America. Schools can pay what they want, and athletes should be able to sign endorsements for their own likeness and image. It’s fairly simple. ...

College football is where American football started and developed, but maybe the commercialization has got out of hand. Commercialization erodes honest, unbiased academics. Education over tailgating.

Actually, it sounds to me like that coach wanted his entire team to hail from the Traitor States and be typical crackers inhabitants of those States in all respects, from religion on down. Marijuana was just his favored excuse this week, as he's been caught using other discriminatory tactics in the past.

And, as the Essay correctly points out, no University (a place one goes to get smarter) needs to have an official representing it trafficking in large quantities of stupid.
