I was in my room at my parents house in Indiana. It was a couple of months after Mom died. I was sitting on my bed reading. I had been taking pictures earlier but hadn't put the camera back yet. I called Pixie's name and she looked up just as I took the shot.

I tend to have a camera ready to go in our sitting room - usually grab a few shots a week - cats when we have them and interesting stuff going on outside at other times.

I got a strange look when I took a camera in with me, but I liked the light. It was a very narrow space, and I really didn't want to linger, so the top of the window is missing. Oh well.

. . . as opposed to a phone. Holy cow!

I'm waiting on my pics to transfer from my phone to my desktop (all 244 pics/videos - srsly?), so I logged in while I'm waiting, and wowzer! The pics in this thread look amazing compared to on my phone. Hope the ones I'm posting, if the import ever finishes, look as good as the ones already here.

I've never looked at the site on my phone - going to have to give that a go. Looking forward to seeing your pics.

I spent yesterdayand this morning sorting through around twelve catalogs containing about 20,000 images on four hard drives. I never want to ever do that again.

delightful Photo Essay.

By the way, happy to see that your essay is an official Friday Night 'OT.'

(Maybe it has been, and I didn't pick up on it--I'm not the most observant person, by any means.)

And thanks to all you other excellent photographers--Janis, Michelle, BR--for contributing!

If things ever settle down, I may see if I can put my Android camera to some use. I've looked at it once or twice, and I'm ashamed to say, that even it looks over-my-head. I'm going to try Googling a (detailed) user manual, and see if that can help me out with understanding the symbols.

Hope Everyone has a nice Mother's Day weekend!

Mollie

That's pretty much what I wanted to say ...

Mollie, forget the manual, especially a detailed one! Just try the different symbols, and after a while they'll make more sense. And in reality, you only need very few.

and printed the 14 pages which pertain to the camera.

But, hey--I take your point! Nothing substitutes for just taking photos, and experimenting.

(Some of what I printed, definitely pertains to stuff that I'll likely never need.)

Hey, have a nice Mother's Day!

I am laughing so hard, I can only blow you a kiss and mutual wishes for a nice mother's day.

My daughter and I celebrated a day early yesterday, at a favourite Japanese restaurant, yum!

You can always use the 10 unnecessary pages for kindling Wink

You didn't miss anything - JtC messaged me about the open thread thing. The support was really appreciated.

As far as getting to grips with any camera goes - as long as there is enough light just press the button - the technical stuff becomes more important in darker conditions. Experimenting breaks nothing Smile

pretty good and most have a setting where the camera will try and figure out as much as possible -and this setting usually works really well. Usually its on a wheel on top of the camera and says A, auto, smart, or something similar - its not usually buried in the menus. This is literally point and shoot mode.

I find that if I play around with the camera a bit first then hit the manual (or youtube videos if the manual is indecipherable) when I have specific questions things come together pretty quickly.

Point Ellice House 1861, Victoria BC
This was taken in the Serving Room which separated the servants area from the rest of the house. The stairway to the servants' rooms was across the hall. No flash was allowed inside this rather dark house. The house contains "thousands of authentic Victorian artifacts making it one of the most important collections in North America."

I can't explain why I love this image.
