Open Thread WE 26 JUL 23 ~ BRICS +

Proposed-BRICS-Expansion.jpg

So, let’s take a deep breath and engage open, informed and critical minds when it comes to debating many of the still open, un-known and critical issues surrounding the so-called “game changer” event when the BRICS+ nations convene this August in S. Africa.

Good Wednesday caucus folks. This is a bit disjointed, but an attempt to look into the consequences of US dollar weaponization, sanctions on steroids and the rest of the
world's response. I should mention the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO)..

and other regional financial alliances that have found work-arounds to the IMF, World Bank
and WEF money changers. Latin America and the Caribbean countries are striving in this direction.
Wall Street / Londan are relentless in their pursuit of global hegemony,
but there is considerable push-back.

~

It is not a free trade bloc, but members do coordinate on trade matters and have established a policy bank, the New Development Bank, (NDB) to coordinate infrastructure loans. That was set up in 2014 in order to provide alternative loan mechanisms from the IMF and World Bank structures, which the members had felt had become too US-centric. The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) was set up by China at about the same time for largely the same reasons and to offer alternative financing than that provided by the IMF and World Banks, which were felt to impose political reform policies designed to assist the United States in return for providing loans.

What is in progress, as confirmed by BRICS sherpas, is the R5: a new common payment system. The sherpas are only in the preliminary stages of discussing a new reserve currency which could be gold or commodities-based. The discussions within the Eurasia Economic Union (EAEU), led by Sergey Glazyev, by comparison, are way more advanced.

The Arctic Silk Road, from now on, will be increasingly strategic. The Chinese can keep it open at least from July to October every year. And as a bonus, a warming Arctic allows better access to oil/gas resources. A trademark “win-win” - no wonder since 2017 the development of the Arctic Silk Road is part of BRI.

~

On the Russian front, all eyes are on the 7,200 km-long, multimodal International North-South Transportation Corridor (INSTC) – which alarms the collective west as a de facto replacement of the Suez Canal. The INSTC cuts shipping costs by about 50 percent and saves up to 20 days of travel compared to the Suez route.

~

The order of priorities is to get R5 rolling. All current BRICS currencies start with an “R”: renminbi (yuan), ruble, real, rupee, and rand. R5 will allow current members to increase mutual trade by bypassing the US dollar and reducing their US dollar reserves. This is only the first of many practical steps in the long and winding road of de-dollarization.

Discussing the expansion of BRICS to BRICS+ is currently underway and could be decided
in the next summit on August 2023.
The countries that have shown interest in joining BRICS are:

Algeria
Argentina
Bahrain
Egypt
Indonesia
Iran
Saudi Arabia
United Arab Emirates
Afghanistan,
Bangladesh
Belarus
Kazakhstan
Mexico
Nicaragua
Nigeria
Pakistan
Senegal
Sudan
Syria
Thailand
Tunisia
Turkey
Uruguay
Venezuela, and
Zimbabwe.

However, the Federal Reserve plans to challenge BRICS by launching a new
FedNow payment service. (If you can't beat the enemy, then copy them.)

Sanctions worked on small countries, but Russia's massive natural resources and products could not be really sanctioned. Something our idiot arrogant leaders miscalculated. We'll be paying for the mistake for the rest of our lives.

US economy based on war, BRICS+ economy based on construction and trade. Doesn't take an economist to see which is better.

Thanks for the OT. Got helpers on the way this morning. Nice to get lots done in just a few hours. Have a good one!

“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”

Today is called National All Or Nothing Day in some circles. How about we compromise
and get some wiggle room? Like all of somethings and nothing of everythings.

Historical notes ..

1656 - Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn declares he is insolvent after living beyond his means and spending
too much on artwork and rare items. Leads to the most experimental and exuberantly creative period of his career.
1775 - US Continental Congress creates United States Post Office (U.S.P.O.) in
Philadelphia under Benjamin Franklin
1908 - United States Attorney General Charles Joseph Bonaparte issues an order to immediately staff the Office of the Chief Examiner (later renamed the Federal Bureau of Investigation)
1917 - J. Edgar Hoover gets job in US Department of Justice
1926 - National Bar Association incorporates
1947 - President Truman signs National Security Act (1947), establishing Department of Defense, CIA, National Security Council and Joint Chiefs of Staff
1983 - Light flashes seen on Jupiter moon Io
2022 - Russia announces it will leave the International Space Station at the end of 2024

Cheers!

the Artic Silk Road was known as the Northern Maritime Route and was to be kept clear of ice year round by Russia's massive fleet of ice breakers, many of which are nuclear powered. And
one of the proposed terminals being the INSTC northern end serving Scandinavia and northern Europe (if they straighten up and act nice).
The whole endeavor, the New Silk Road, NMR, and INSTC would become a giant Circle of International Trade. Kind of a win-win to the nth power.
And China is already funding infrastructure projects in South America supporting a new Latin Silk Road connecting southern states up to and possible connecting the north and south continents over the Darien Gap.
Wouldn't it be nice if the western world played nice and joined the Brics+ movement and we connected with the S. American SR and the Russian Orient Express?
Just daydreamin' a little this morning.
Thanks for the OT.

Neither Russia nor China is our enemy.
Neither Iran nor Venezuela are threatening America.
Cuba is a dead horse, stop beating it.

everybody has one and they all stink. This one posted on The Hill this morning by Alexander J Motyl is particularly odious.

After reading it I'd say Alexander missed his calling. He should be writing fiction novels.

to throw at some of the smarter than me folks- I still can throw my marbles at them, that might even work better.

I hope and wish you all all the best, less heat, either more or less water, whatever you need.

Good Night from my woods, which luckily do not yet burn. I pray for cooler marbles and throw those
instead- Smile

https://www.cnbc.com/2023/07/26/hunter-biden-guilty-plea-criminal-tax-ch...

Hunter Biden entered a plea of not guilty, pending a judge’s approval, in federal court Wednesday after an initial deal with prosecutors on misdemeanor tax charges was put on hold amid confusion about the government’s ongoing investigation of the president’s son, NBC News reported.

The 53-year-old Biden had initially appeared in U.S. District Court in Wilmington, Delaware, to enter a guilty plea a month after federal prosecutors first revealed the criminal tax charges against him. His attorneys had reached a separate pretrial diversion agreement with prosecutors on an unrelated firearms charge, those court filings showed.

But that plan fell apart under scrutiny from Judge Maryellen Noreika about the details of the plea deal.

Prosecutors said the agreements on the tax and gun charges were distinct — but during the hearing, Hunter Biden said he wouldn’t agree to plead guilty to the tax charges without the diversion program and dismissal of gun charges, according to NBC News reporters in the courtroom.
