Why do I have so much trouble writing these when Mort Sahl could pick up any newspaper and have a field day? That question led me to this historical bit in which MOrt explains both the late sixties and, though he didn't know it, the nineties through maybe 2035 or so
I believe George Harrison made some sort of comment about how simple it is to write and, to illustrate it, came up with While My Guitar Gently Weeps.
I've noticed that whenever I'm "in the zone" I can knock off some quality tunes, two or three in a row, without feeling like I'm working. Then that feeling passes and I'm stuck. I find that I'm repeating myself, that I'm not really free.
Speaking of free....so shaharazade and I were talking about Joan Baez getting named to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and shaz said "she was really good until she got a nose job and started doing #$^ songs". I had to laugh. So direct and to the point! I wish I could do that instead of my usual thing, which is to try to be clever, mocking in a subtle way.
And I may stay stuck until a big thaw. My 900'driveway is now glare ice, with glaciers forming. Car is partway up and parked. I cannot back it down the curves through the trees. Too scared to try to walk down to get the mail and packages. I don't want to break something.

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
Yesterday it came up in the recent essays list and I commented on it. Maybe I hallucinated the whole damn thing? Ir was about Dr. Zuess's Grinch story. Thanks for this one EL. Writing OT's is not as easy as it looks. I think of great ones while cooking or doing anything offline and when I sit down to write I come up empty. Shah seems able to put together OT's that are not belabored and very humanistic. your Monday number ones are brilliant. Mort Saul was also a professional funny guy,who knows how long and hard it was to come up with his routines. Good art preforming and writing just looks easy. My parents loved him and we had a couple of his albums. I was too young to get his dry brand of humor. Man this winter is a depressor. I'm not at all feeling festive. See you later everyone and have a good day.
(and popped off in) that essay too. Seeing none here for today I decided to throw something up there and came up with this while heading out for peppercorns, which we allowed ourselves to run out of.

That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --
In a truly just society, peppercorns would be distributed according to need, and inadvertantly running out, especially in the peppercorn-intensive pre-Yule period, simply would not happen.

for covering the glitch. I know she's living between two house holds and doesn't have computer access at one. Glad I didn't dream it up. Peppercorns are an essential. Don't mean to be grumpy Grinch myself but man o man this winter has been a real bummer. I guess it's all in how you look at it. I should be happy as my rash is gone daddy gone and I'm no longer hose bound.
We went out and did some Christmas shopping on the neighborhood's main street. That was fun as walking and moving always helps with one's perspective. My kids are all going to Southern Oregon to celebrate with their wife's families. They are coming to our house New Years day which takes the pressure off us and allows me to get in the winter seasonal spirit.
Loved the Mort Saul. No wonder my parents liked him. Being a rebellious wanna be beatnik type I gravitated towards Lenny Bruce. Made me laugh out loud with his placement of that era's pols on his chart. He had Humphrey down and Bobby too at that point in time. Even though I wasn't able to vote yet me and my mom worked Bobby Kennedy's campaign here in Oregon. Time is weird it seems top go in circles.
These days Lenny has become Dustin Hoffman. Lenny however cannot be whitewashed his obscenities live on. He started the sick comedian tradition that still lives.. They are not PC these court jesters and satirists but they poke needed holes in our societies hypocrisy.

when you're locked in you can write about anything

Hey, don't knock yourself.
There's a lot to be said for trying to be clever, mocking in a subtle way. Probably.

Happy Solstice!
Well we finally made it to winter. Hooray for us - cause the light returns!
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
For winter solstice, I got iced in @ home

What happened to CSTS Wednesday OT?
Yesterday it came up in the recent essays list and I commented on it. Maybe I hallucinated the whole damn thing? Ir was about Dr. Zuess's Grinch story. Thanks for this one EL. Mort Sahl said, "People ask me how I come up with so much
material so quickly and I tell them that I generalize from stereotypes and if I weren't so perceptive, I'd be a bigot."
Funny man.
"The justness of individual land right is not justifiable to those to whom the land by right of first claim collectively belonged"
I think CSTS published early by mistake, I popped up
(and popped off in) that essay too. Seeing none here for today I decided to throw something up there and came up with this while heading out for peppercorns, which we allowed ourselves to run out of.

We are horrified
